Depends

Normaly I'd say No. We didn't have the luxury or need 20 years ago, and didn't miss it. But now that we do, I don't see any harm in it, ONLY; if you have your device in Flight Mode, thus not transfering any data that would possibly interfere in flight instruments, haveing head sets on where it would not bother anyone in any way, or if it was really necessary, i.e. Buisness- working with documents, spreadsheets, etc. on Pocket P.C.'s,( In Flight Mode ) or even on regular cell phones that you can put in "Music only" Mode, and listen to your music or watch your Video's, once again if it does't interfer with the Aircrafts Data controls and/ or interfers with other passengers comfort in ANY way...just my 3 cents..

No cell phones on planes

by herbwuz - 11/24/07 8:50 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I already have to listen to public cell phone calls everywhere else - loud, one-sided conversations - and I don't want to listen to it on a plane where I can't escape.

I'd say only and I MEAN ONLY

if it's important - I could see some importance in having a cell phone.

Especially with concerns at home, things you forgot about in your rush to get on that plane, and in light of the cases of the passengers on those flights connected with 9/11, it would be best to have cell phones to check on family and friends, remind someone to do something, or let someone close know of an emergency.

However, if you're just talking to your friend down in the valley, talking and laughing loudly in a manner that would make glass crack, then I'm against it. Don't they have books, magazines and coloring books to better occupy your attention?

Yes but NO!!!

You should not be allowed free-for-all access at all times. It can be annoying. If you keep your voice down and nobody has to hear your irritating ringtone it should be fine.

The reason why you're not allowed is because the frequencies used by cell carriers are close to the ones airlines use. Cell-phones used inside the plane actually interfere with the communications circuits that the pilots use. Sometimes they can just hear your conversation but sometimes they can't communicate on the regular channel at all.

But if that technological difficulty were solved, I think people should be allowed to use their phone. If it's night-time(people sleeping) keep your voice down or just use TXT messaging if you can't sleep.

It can be a big inconvenience for some who are on a business trip and have a lot of communicating to do, or they are just taking a long flight. Some people just want to call and say hello/goodbuy to family and friends. I don't really see anything wrong with that, not in and of itself.

Never

Absolutely not and here's why: if you allow some of the people, some of the time, in special situations only, blah blah blah, to use their cell phones, who is going to monitor these situations? A flight attendant who most likely has enough responsibilities already? And here is the most important kicker: someone, eventually, will say they could not use their precious cell phone for texting, talking, whatever, by whomever the airlines finally appoint to make these important decisions, and they will sue the airlines because they know it's a deep pocket defendant and they most likely will get something out of it. For proof, see any number of pointless law suits in the court system now. Most people just want quiet on their flight or already have enough stress as it is- listening to some blathering moronic wanna-be unluckily seated next to you talk incessantly about nothing for a 2- or 3-hour flight would lead to more Federal Marshals having to arrest more people for unloading their frustration on the incapable of good moral conduct cell phone user seated next to them. They already cause accidents on our roadways, lets not open up a new avenue of destruction for them.

Should cell phones be allowed on planes?

by JCipo - 11/26/07 8:48 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

These cell phones should only be used for short important calls in or out. Long conversations should be allowed if there is a lounge that passengers can go to to talk for any length of time.

Loud Talking

by Centrode - 11/30/07 12:27 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Most people (yes, probably you as well, when you think about it) tend to talk louder on the cellphone than in a normal face-to-face conversation. Now, in a closed and personal-space-wise "closed" environment, who would want a loud talking person next to you speaking about heavens knows what or could care less! Get off the phone and take a quite nap for goodness sake (and for the sake of the respect of those within earshot).

Just asking for trouble!

by jrjung - 4/25/08 4:12 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Allowing unrestricted cell phone use during flights is a recipe for some nasty arguments, if not physical fights. Unless there can be separate sections for cell phone and no cell phone with a soundproof barrier between them, there will be mayhem. Determined users will probably go to the toilet, lock themselves in, and yatter for the duration of the flight and shut out those who need to use those facilities.

Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes?

by lhridley - 5/14/08 5:46 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! The interior of airplanes are small areas. A large percentage of cellphone users seem to lack the respect of others around them and talk too d--- loud when they are on their cell phones.
I am sure that I am like many, many others who do NOT want to be involved in THEIR conversations.

no cellphone on planes please

by joco69 - 5/18/08 3:16 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Cellphones are in my opinion the most annoying toys ever invented. They disturb me in my favorite restaurant, they annoy me at the supermarket, they annoy me on the street when I think somebody is talking to me. Cellphones on airplanes will get my blood pressure up. What on earth is so important that it cannot wait until you get to a real phone. Sofar I have never listed to an inteligent conversation by anyone using a cellphone.
I will never ever use a cellphone, nothing as important that cannot wait until I get to a real phone.
