does anybody have a recommendation for an a/v receiver with phono input that goes well with today's high def standards (hdmi/dts-es/dolby)?
Although you may not find a "phono" input labeled on a new receiver, all new receivers have multiple inputs that will work with a turntable. Any input with RCA type input plugs will work.
You need a receiver with a "phono" input. If you plug it in to any old rca input on the receiver you will barely be able to hear your turntable. A phono preamp is built in to certain receivers to pre-amplify the signal before it hits the amplifiers. Try Denon or any other brand. Usually it is only found on the higher priced models because it adds a hundred or 2 to the price.

TOTALLY WRONG. Not only is the signal from a turntable cartridge way too weak for regular line inputs, but it needs to have the RIAA equalization curve applied to it to make it sound correct.
You can buy an external phonp preamp and use any A/V receiver you want. I did a quick search on Amazon and found a whole bunch with a wide price range. You can check out the reviews.

I have a Yamaha w/ phono input and my friend just got an Onkyo w/ it. Both are very good and have all the HDMI and optical inputs. My Yamaha was a lot simpler to conect than his Onkyo but the Onkyo has better graphics in the onscreen setup menu.
