Q: New iPhone

by bwalshy99 - 5/15/08 12:00 PM

I currently have an iPhone and its lack of certain things that even basic cell phones have bugs me. It doesn't have picture messaging (unless you send it through an email), no video recording, no IM client, no voice recognition, and no support for stereo bluetooth. Are there any rumors they will add any of this stuff with the 3G iPhone?

A: There's always rumors :)

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:06 PM

But I think many of those things will arrive. Picture mail makes much more sense with a faster network, as does video recording. It's just too slow right now.

Q: Desktop Size

by Double Nice - 5/15/08 12:00 PM

With Apple ability to shrink it's products over time, any chance that the towers will decrease in size? So far, they seem to be getting bigger.

A: Not sure

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:05 PM

I think as the Mac Pro gets more and more powerful, you're always going to need a pretty big box to make sure it gets enough airflow over the processor. You can't do that just yet in smaller towers, you need something pretty big to get the heat off eight cores.

Q: Red vertical lines

by gaclark - 5/15/08 11:59 AM

Have you ever heard of PowerBook users runing into red vertical lines on the screen while using programs like iMovie and iPhoto?

A: I have

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:04 PM

you might want to consult Apple's discussion forums for more information on that problem, but the vertical lines issue has been around for a while.

Q: ipod Touch upgrade

by superdave_89 - 5/15/08 11:58 AM

With the hype about the 3G iPhone coming up, the iPod Touch is getting lost in the shuffle (no pun intended).

What do you think will the next gen Touch have that is similar to the iPhone (rumored GPS, iTune apps, etc.). And when do you think the update will be released?

A: Everything

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:04 PM

I think the iPod Touch is a phone-less iPhone, and therefore would get everything the iPhone would get. I don't think a new iPod Touch will be out until September, which will be the one-year anniversary.

Q: Zune

by Double Nice - 5/15/08 11:57 AM

I see you can get $14.99 monthly unlimited downloads for Zune. An chance iTunes will follow suit?

A: Eventually, I think so

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:03 PM

It's so early in the days of buying digital music. Apple doesn't need to change their model right now, they're the biggest music store in the country, but one day they might have to accomodate people who like subscriptions.

Q: Ipod Classic 160

by Groovething - 5/15/08 11:57 AM

Any thoughts on what the next upgrade of this ipod might be...I see on MacRumors that it is over due for the next version

A: I think the iPod Classic will go away

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:02 PM

It's all about the iPod Touch, now. Maybe another, flash-memory iPod Classic will come out in September, but it's getting near the end of that line.

A: No more questions, please!

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:01 PM

I'm going to answer everything up to bwalshy99's question, but I can't take any more, sorry.

Q: AppleCare follow up Q

by Joe C. - 5/15/08 11:53 AM

Thanks for trying with my Address Book Q, btw. : )

I saw you said the apple care is rarely worth it. I do live near an Apple Store. I have held off on getting A-Care for my MacBook Pro, bought two months ago. Just to clarify your previous answer to another poster below, so you don't think the apple care is worth it for a MBP if I live near a store? I felt like rolling the dice and the computer itself was expensive enough but would appreciate your take! : )

A: No, I don't

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:00 PM

Get the in-store support. You'll have to wait in line, but you'll talk to an actual person.

Q: What gadgets does Tom Have on his desk

by jssshashi - 5/15/08 11:52 AM

Just wondering

A: Right now

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 12:00 PM

A Psystar Mac, a ThinkPad, a Treo 700p, an iPod Nano, a point-and-shoot Canon Powershot. At home, I have a MacBook Pro and a Sharp HDTV.

Q: Windows on Mac

by Jharkle - 5/15/08 11:51 AM

I am thinking about purchasing an iMac for my office( I have mutiple Macs at home). All of the office programs that I run are run on a XP PC. Does Microsoft still even still sell and support Windows XP? I'm hesitant to use Vista and I really want a Mac for my office.

A: Yes, but not for long

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:58 AM

Supposedly they are going to cut off XP sales at the end of June. We shall see.

Q: notebook refresh

by mvf1984 - 5/15/08 11:50 AM

Tom-
Do you think that the next macbook refresh will be a major design overhaul? Additionally, is there any reason why the macbook pro still uses a latch instead of a magnetic closing lid like all of the other models?

A: Depends on how you define major

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:58 AM

I think the MacBook line will continue to get thinner, and they might change the material. But a notebook is a notebook, it's not going to change all that much.

Good question on the latch, I haven't thought about that before. Reliability, maybe?

Q: ilife

by eros904 - 5/15/08 11:49 AM

Tom,

Im not familiar w/ Apple products. Can I use ilife on my PC?

A: No

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:57 AM

Not legally, at least. I suppose you could set up some sort of virtualization thing, and run a hacked copy of Mac OS X and iLife, but Apple doesn't sell a Windows version of iLife.

Q: Steve Jobs

by filmore123 - 5/15/08 11:49 AM

How can I contact Steve Jobs? I need to have a little chat with him.
(I'm serious)

A: sjobs@apple.com

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:56 AM

Let me know if he replies.

Q: External Hard Drive

by rob wolf - 5/15/08 11:46 AM

Tom,
Need a new hard drive for that new 24" iMac I'll be buying this September. Want to buy a 1TB External Hard Drive to use with my current 20" iMac, 2GHz, 1.5 DDR SDRAM, G5, Power PC.
What do think is the best solution to eventually use Time Machine w/ New iMac and back up and transfer this computer to the new one. Also do you think it is worth the money to get the new Time Capsule and what advantages would it give me in addition to working seamlessly with an iMac?
Sincerely Yours,
Robert

A: Get Time Capsule

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:56 AM

If you don't already have an external drive, I'd get Time Capsule to make Time Machine easier to use. It's also nice because it's a Wi-Fi router.

If you already have an external drive, though, Time Capsule isn't worth it, in my opinion.

Q: Why is apple so secretive.

by jssshashi - 5/15/08 11:45 AM

Do they Work for CIA.

A: Because it gets people interested

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:55 AM

Apple does a masterful job at getting people to go crazy over their products. The rumors and hype drives so much interest in what they do, it's like free advertising.

I also think they are ahead of the curve in many areas, and letting that work come to light would hurt their sales.

Q: For teachers

by lunchbox1972 - 5/15/08 11:45 AM

I have some elementary and middle school teachers who have talked about their interest in interactive display boards for their classrooms for a few years now. Do you think apple is already working on something like this?

A: No

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:54 AM

Unless you're talking about something like a Mac tablet, which might be in the works. But a larger blackboard-like display? I wouldn't expect that anytime soon.

Q: WiMax Support

by freemarket--2008 - 5/15/08 11:45 AM

As a Sprint subscriber I would like to see WiMax built into future MacBooks and iMacs. Is this likely?

A: Good question

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:53 AM

With Apple's tight partnership with Intel, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen. But I also think that the network will have to be built out nationally before Apple takes the plunge, and that could take a while.

Q: Mac Ads Yet Again

by Double Nice - 5/15/08 11:43 AM

Not really a question, but a comment.

Initially I loved the Mac ads, but as more come out I'm fonder of the PC character than the Mac character and I don't think that is Apples intention.

I'd love to see them go back to the "running woman with the sledge hammer" feel. Apple is so innovative, but their Mac commercials feel low rent.

A: I think this Mac vs. PC campaign has run its course

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:52 AM

It might be time for an update. But the campaign did what it was designed to do, Apple's Mac sales are going through the roof.

Q: In the whatever happened to vein.

by R. Proffitt - 5/15/08 11:42 AM

Or nerve let me add the

Apple Camera. Ahead of its time. Way ahead.
(no question, just adding to.)

A: We were just talking about that at News.com

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:51 AM

My colleague Stephen Shankland, a big camera buff, wants Apple to do a camera. I'm not sure it's a good idea.

Q: iWork or Office?

by Tomás Miranda - 5/15/08 11:41 AM

Hey, Tom, I just got a MacBook, and as a student, I'd like to have your opinion on what's better: iWork or Office?

*Please consider that in my school we use PCs for presentations...

Thanks! C=

A: I prefer Office, personally

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:51 AM

If you have to share files around with other Windows users, Office would probably be cleaner. But if you're just presenting, it shouldn't matter.

Q: Office 08

by BlackEaglejs - 5/15/08 11:41 AM

Do you think Microsoft will ever get around to fixing the issue s that Office 08 has with Spaces and Expose?

A: Wasn't aware of that problem

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:50 AM

But I do think Microsoft won't let as much time pass between Office for Mac updates as they did the last time around.

Q: Difference

by The Zach101 - 5/15/08 11:40 AM

IM useing a HP Pavillion AMD Turion 64 x2 1.66 GHZ and 2GB ram with Vista and Im wishing to change to a MacbookPro the second most expensive configuration they have but I was wondering how much of a difference there would be in speed and performance?

A: Hard to say, exactly

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:49 AM

I'm not aware of any direct Vista to Leopard comparisons that way, they're such different products. Mac OS X is definitely snappier on boot and shutdown than Windows, so you'd see a difference there, but, as always, it really depends on what you're doing with your computer.

Q: Address Book Issues

by Joe C. - 5/15/08 11:40 AM

Hi. New Mac switcher from PC, so please excuse me if there is an obvious answer! : ) I use Address Book on my iMac and have a .Mac account. I use two emails in Mail (my ISP's and my .Mac email). For some reason, I cannot sync my Address Book entries with my .Mac account. I would like to do that and to get them onto the new MacBook Pro that we just bought. Any solutions?

Thanks!

A: Not offhand

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:48 AM

Can anybody help Joe? I haven't heard that specific problem, but you could try asking around here or on Apple's customer forums on Apple's Web page.

Q: multimedia

by merk850 - 5/15/08 11:39 AM

Hey Tom,

Why do you think Apple bills itself as the all in on e multimedia but falls short in some obvious situations?

For one, if I want a place to put up family photos and videos I could pay an extra $99 for .MAC and the photos look great and I can get video up as well. What is lacking is the ability for friends/ relatives to order prints right from my gallery online in . MAC.

To me, that would be a great revenue stream. Am I missing something here?

Steve

A: It's a question of priorties

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:47 AM

.Mac is definitely due for an overhaul, but there's only so much that Apple can do. They could probably make money doing that kind of thing, but they'd be smarter, I think, to keep their attention on the core Mac/iPod/iPhone businesses.

Q: Listening In

by Double Nice - 5/15/08 11:39 AM

What are the chances of someone important at Apple watching this Q&A

A: (NT) Hi Steve!

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:45 AM

Q: Is a an Apple TV set coming

by matthewadavid - 5/15/08 11:38 AM

Apple is after the last 10ft to your TV. While Apple TV looks cool, why not just make the TV itself? Have you heard anything about this?

A: Good question

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:45 AM

HP makes their own TVs that have some intelligence built into them. But I wouldn't expect Apple to go after that right now, they're much more focused on mobile products.

Q: 3G Network

by Jharkle - 5/15/08 11:38 AM

With Apple's offical announcement of the 3G iPhone coming soon, what do think consumers can expect from AT&T in terms of 3G network expansion? Will non-metropolitan areas of the country benefit from an expansion? Doesn't network expansion take years to complete?

A: They will definitely expand

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:45 AM

It does take years to build a network, but they've already made progress in lots of areas around the U.S. Faster networks are an easy sell to customers, so AT&T can confidently invest in that kind of capability, because no one ever complains about faster networks.

Q: Applecare or not to Applecare

by bigpetis - 5/15/08 11:38 AM

Is Applecare worth it? I know they have it for all of their products with the most expensive Applecare going to the Macbook Pro. Is it a necessity for the computer? Also, would you recommend it for iPods too?

A: Depends

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:44 AM

If you don't live near an Apple store, it might be worth it. If you do live near an Apple store, I would get my support that way. I wouldn't recommend it for any iPod except the iPod Touch.

Q: iTunes

by BRMperc - 5/15/08 11:36 AM

My wife and i both have iphones, and we both purchase video and music from itunes. Is there a way we can both access this purchased content?

A: Use the same computer?

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:43 AM

You should be able to authorize the same Mac or PC used to buy the videos and music on both iPhones.

Q: 3g iPhone and Sim cards

by Stormspace - 5/15/08 11:36 AM

Will the 3g iPhone use sim cards like the current generation?

A: Yes

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:42 AM

Unless Apple decides to release a CDMA version for networks like Sprint or Verizon's or the ones used in South Korea and Japan, they will stick with the GSM route to 3G, which still uses SIM cards. That's a requirement of that GSM family of standards.

Q: iphone 3G

by vilic4 - 5/15/08 11:34 AM

When you do think we will be seeing the iphone 3Gs and did you hear anything about iphone nano?

A: June

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:41 AM

I haven't heard the iPhone Nano rumor in a while, so that might be off. One problem with the iPhone Nano would be the screen size, it would be hard to use the touchscreen stuff on a very small screen.

Q: Leopard on pc

by filmore123 - 5/15/08 11:33 AM

I know that it isn't exactly legal, but have you tried installing the kalyway leopard version(via torrents) for PCs? If so, does it work properly?

A: I haven't

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:41 AM

But again, the Psystar one I'm using today works pretty well.

Q: mac book

by d_man_force - 5/15/08 11:32 AM

i am looking for a laptop for school i dont realy want to mess around with the problems that windoes has will a just a basic mac book be good for college if i buy iwork or office for mac

A: The basic one would be fine

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:40 AM

Unless you're doing a lot of heavy lifting, the basic MacBook config is fine for a student. I would definitely get either iWork or Office for Mac, but that's an individual preference.

Q: iPhone pictures

by Stormspace - 5/15/08 11:32 AM

I heard that getting the photo's off an iPhone required them to be sent via the phone network. Is that the case, and if so have you heard of any plans to change it?

A: I don't think that's the case

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:39 AM

You can sync photos from your iPhone to your Mac or PC through iTunes, right? And you can also e-mail them from your iPhone, I believe.

Q: Dying to Ditch the Blackberry

by Mumble03 - 5/15/08 11:29 AM

I'm dying to ditch my blackberry (which is required and distributed to me by my employer). With the Exchange Activesync additions, that seems like it could be a realistic option. However, I'm getting a lot of grief from our IT guy about supporting an iPhone. How difficult do you anticipate the setup for the 2.0 version
will be? Would I be able to set up the iPhone to receive email from the Enterprise server without involvement from the IT guy? Will there be any problem having Blackberries and iPhones using the same server?

A: Yes, and no

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:38 AM

You could set up your iPhone to receive corporate e-mail without the IT department's knowledge, but I wouldn't recommend it. The set up on your end for iPhone 2.0 will be simple, but not necessarily on their end.

There's no problem with having BlackBerries and iPhones on the same server, since they're talking to the Exchange protocols. But IT can support whatever they want, and IT people tend to prefer standardizing on one product or another to make life easier.

Q: Apple TV Accessories

by jrjmusician - 5/15/08 11:27 AM

I am hearing that there might be a keyboard or a replacement from the apple tv remote. Is that true because It would be coo to have more of a computer like experience using apple tv!

A: Not sure, but it's a good idea

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:36 AM

If Apple leaves Apple TV the way it is, you don't need much more than a remote. But if they add a browser, which I hope they do, you'll want a keyboard.

But Apple executives have said they don't want to make Apple TV into a computer, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Q: iphone

by NISSANGTR360 - 5/15/08 11:27 AM

Do you know when more iphones will be available, and will there be a price drop on the edge enabled phones when the 3G ones hit?

A: End of June

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:36 AM

I would expect iPhones to become available again in June. I'm not sure that Apple will continue to sell EDGE phones after the faster one is released, but you'll probably be able to get refurbished EDGE phones for a while, for a discount.

Q: NEW COMPUTER

by rob wolf - 5/15/08 11:26 AM

Tom,
Currently have a 20" iMac, 2GHz Power PC, 1.5GB DDR SDRAM, G5 running Tiger.
Will upgrade to a 24" iMac. What processor speed, how much Ram and what size hard drive do you recommend. Also when should I upgrade to Leopard on my current iMac or should I just wait till I buy the new iMac?
Sincerely Yours,
Robert

A: Depends on what you do

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:35 AM

First of all, if you buy a new Mac, you'll get Leopard. If you want a new system anyway, there's no point in upgrading your old one.

I'd get the best configuration you can afford. If you don't run a lot of programs, you don't need as fast a processor. If you take a lot of pictures, you want the bigger hard drive.

Q: Mac os x 10.5.3

by filmore123 - 5/15/08 11:22 AM

Have you heard anything about a mac osx 10.5.3 upgrade?

A: Probably due shortly

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:33 AM

Some developers have reported received test builds.

Q: Worst Apple Product?

by bigpetis - 5/15/08 11:21 AM

Alright, we all love  products. But which is the worst product? Up until February it was easily Apple TV, but now I have to say it is the Shuffle. What is your opinion?

A: iPod Hi-Fi

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:33 AM

What the hell was that thing?

Q: Apple don't make any Macs for gamers? Shouldn't they at least have a shot?

by DoubleVI - 5/15/08 11:20 AM

What I really mean here is, that if Apple really wants to move up the food chain, it really needs an affordable solution for eaach market type. Take gaming as an example. Unless you go to the Mac PRO which is over £1000 in th UK where I livce, you won't get a tower-based system for your needs, the onlt other options you have are the Mac Mini, outa the question, and the iMac that does a passable job but can't be upgraded. Now I know Aplle's primary concern isn't gaming, it'd make a nice alternative to Windows gaming, and could even be more efficient if game devs code for OS-X properly, it'd save us all from Microsoft's clutches for a while, they don't own gaming anyway, so who's to stop us really. Cheers Man

A: The regular Macs are pretty hefty

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:33 AM

A MacBook Pro is a pretty powerful system, and you can hook it to a bigger display for gaming.

I think Apple is more interested in the casual gaming market, anyway, and they'll tackle that market through the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Q: Tablet mac

by filmore123 - 5/15/08 11:20 AM

Will apple be releasing an official tablet mac soon?

A: That's one of the rumors

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:31 AM

I would be surprised to see it, people haven't shown much interest in tablets to date. And they are also working on so much stuff right now, it's hard to imagine them pulling off another major product introduction this year. Maybe in the future.

Q: virus protection

by koztastic - 5/15/08 11:20 AM

what do you think is the best virus protection software for macs?

A: Mac OS X

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:30 AM

I've never run into a Mac user that actually uses antivirus software, so I'm not sure what to recommend. I know Symantec makes anti-phishing software for Macs, but I've never used it.

Q: Windows Itunes Artwork..

by jssshashi - 5/15/08 11:19 AM

Is there a way to commit the album art and tag data from itunes to the file. so that i can use it in different mediapayers.

The itunes commits to its own database..

I paln to format my system.. and dont want to do the tagging again.

A: I'm not sure

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:30 AM

Does anybody know the answer to that one?

Q: Hey, Microsoft does this too!

by R. Proffitt - 5/15/08 11:19 AM

Hey, Microsoft does this too!

"Why does Apple insist on having the Mac OS X option of closing all a program's windows but having the program still run. This is not intuitive and easy for a new and non-technical user."

Go try any PDA with Windows Mobile or CE.
Bob

A: There you go

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:29 AM

I have to think it's something to do with not wanting to close the application entirely, and then restart it when you need it again.

Q: Apple TV

by JadeWarrior - 5/15/08 11:18 AM

Will movies rented via the Apple TV ever support captions?

A: Not sure

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:29 AM

I wouldn't think that would be that hard to add into Apple TV, but I haven't heard it mentioned before.

Q: iPhone tethering

by bigpetis - 5/15/08 11:17 AM

No, it can't be tethered. But maybe in June with the software update. Hell, anything is possible with that update.

A: (NT) Thanks!

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:29 AM

Q: Easy to use

by deeplyaware - 5/15/08 11:17 AM

Why does Apple insist on having the Mac OS X option of closing all a program's windows but having the program still run. This is not intuitive and easy for a new and non-technical user.

A: I've never understood that, either

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:28 AM

I don't know the specific reason why they do that, but when I started using Macs again for the first time several years ago, that kept tripping me up. Maybe it's to prevent you from hosing any changes you've made, or losing any work you've done?

Q: Question about software for new Mac owners

by ittesi259 - 5/15/08 11:16 AM

A big drawback for many people switching to Macs is that going into a store for software is impossible or at best a poor selection (unless its an Apple Store). Even being able to Bootcamp Windows has not solved this entirely. Can you recommend a good place to research and find Mac software other than Apple's own website?

A: Download.com

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:27 AM

Or, Versiontracker.com

Q: Apple Bluetooth Headset

by Double Nice - 5/15/08 11:16 AM

Any news on an upgrade to the Apple Bluetooth Headset?
I'm planning on getting the Jawbone 2, but if apple makes improvements, I'd hold out.

A: Maybe with iPhone 2.0?

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:27 AM

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those this year, especially if Apple upgrades the Bluetooth capabilities on the iPhone.

Q: stock

by smckenna1 - 5/15/08 11:16 AM

would you buy stock in the apple company

A: I don't do stock recommendations

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:26 AM

Sorry, but you don't want me as your financial adviser, trust me.

Q: Mid Mac

by joedmd - 5/15/08 11:16 AM

I need a mac that is upgradeable (easily accessed case, memory slots) but I don't need 8 cores like the mac pro has. My current G4 933 was 1400 when I bought it, just a little more than my PC bought 1 yr earlier (P3 500 - with "second best" options)

Now, a Mac Pro is way over 2000 and you can still get a "second best" PC for a little over 1000.

Apples midline is the imac, and I just don't want an all-in-1, esp one that is not really upgradeable.

Why doesn't apple make a iMac spec. computer in a tower form factor?

A: Everybody wants all-in-ones now

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:26 AM

There doesn't seem to be as much demand for the old-style tower desktops in general, and Apple's never been big on upgradable models at the lower price points.

Q: Office for mac

by filmore123 - 5/15/08 11:15 AM

Will office for mac be updated or no?

A: MS Office for Mac?

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:25 AM

That was just updated in January.

Q: .mac

Hi Tom

I've been having problems with my .mac server for months now. I've been reading on different blogs that others are encountering the same problems e.g. not being able to send emails. Have you heard of anything? Also is .mac up for an upgrade?

alan

A: Definitely due for an upgrade

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:24 AM

I'm actually working on a story about that right now.

I'm not familiar with the problem you describe, i'm not a tech support guy, sorry.

Q: Old Macs

by Double Nice - 5/15/08 11:12 AM

I've got old Mac G4s stacking up in my corner, does Apple have a trade-in program like HP?

A: I don't think so

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:24 AM

I've not heard of that, has anyone ever done anything like that?

Q: iPhone hearsay

by Ramon12martinez - 5/15/08 11:12 AM

I put this question on the forum but now i want to hear from you. i have a friend who says the iphone is going to become a tmobile phone too and keeps saying that others have heard the same thing. but i continue to say that with the 5 year agreement between apple and att that this is impossible. unless i see or hear proof.

also, what do you think will be the biggest improvement on the new iphones. i already have one and want a new one. do you think it would be worth it?

A: Unlocked coming soon

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:23 AM

I think that Apple will start selling an unlocked version of the iPhone fairly soon, because it's quite clear they can't control unlocking, it's much easier than anyone would have thought. When, I'm not sure, but definitely before 2012.

Faster downloads. I have a 3G Treo, and I'd never go back to a slower network.

Q: Sync an iPhone at multiple locations

by aztec92154 - 5/15/08 11:12 AM

I have a computer at work that I add music to. A quick sync with my iPhone will load up the music I want to listen to while I'm driving home. When I go home I transfer my purchases to that computer. If I buy more music at home and sync... my entire ipod is erased and all the music is reloaded. Why? Is there a way to sync and iPhone at multiple locations without the reformat?

A: I'm not sure

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:22 AM

You should be able to authorize your iPod with more than one computer, that doesn't make sense to me. That's a detailed question that would be better for Apple technical support, or to pose to other users in the forum.

Q: The Apple Psystar Clone

by R. Proffitt - 5/15/08 11:12 AM

Now that CNet has reviewed it at http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/psystar-open-computer/4505-3118_7-32978558.html would you care to comment about it?

As to me, it's a great time to buy stock in Apple's legal firm.

A: I'm doing this chat on a Psystar

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:21 AM

So far, it's worked pretty well for me. I apparently got a model with a quieter fan. Everything I've installed has worked fine, and nothing has gone wrong yet, although I've only been using it for a week.

Q: 3G iPhone in June?

by danielone06 - 5/15/08 11:11 AM

Hey Tom,

Do you think we will be able to purchase a 3G iPhone in June?

I really really want one :)

Best Regards,

Dan

A: Probably

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:20 AM

You might not be able to buy it right away, but I think we'll at least learn when it's coming. Most likely, it will be ready to go in June.

Q: Unlocked Iphones and will The Enterprise support work on another Carrier

by YANKPRID15 - 5/15/08 11:11 AM

Its no secret that many Iphones have been bought to be unlocked and that many are being used on other networks other than AT&T. Theoretically, If you happen to buy an iphone and get it unlocked, will the enterprise support still work, since that is a Network issue

A: Good question

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:19 AM

I would think the software would work, the support for ActiveSync, but I'm not sure your IT department would support a jailbroken/unlocked iPhone.

Q: best non standard software for a mac

by bigpetis - 5/15/08 11:10 AM

Tom,

What do you feel is the best piece of software that should come on every Mac standard? Quicksilver? Or is it a productivity suite like iWork or Office?

A: iWork would be nice

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:18 AM

I'd love to see that included, especially now that an updated one has been released.

Q: iTunes

by Cream Juicy - 5/15/08 11:10 AM

Do you know why you can't download and watch HD movies from iTunes on a iMac. It's my understanding that you have to have Apple TV to watch HD iTunes movies, but that just doesn't seem to make sense to me; especially after spending the extra bucks for a 24 inch monitor.

A: Size restrictions?

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:18 AM

That would be a pretty big file. But I was under the impression you could download HD movies using your Mac, I'll have to check on that.

Q: iPhone update

by missiong - 5/15/08 11:10 AM

...only because it needs to be asked...

1. Any new news or rumors about the 3G iPhone?
2. Will Apple ever include a read keyboard with one...or do any 3rd parties make or plan to make a snap-on, clip-on, or otherwise portable keyboard for one? And,
3. Can a Windows XP laptop be tethered to an iPhone and use it as a wireless modem?

Thanks!

A: What's a 3G iPhone?

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:16 AM

:)

I expect a 3G iPhone to be at least announced next month. Shipping dates, we'll see.

I don't expect a QWERTY keyboard on the iPhone anytime soon, but would not be surprised to see Apple release a docked one.

I should know this, but I don't recall offhand if the iPhone can be tethered. Can anybody else answer that?

Q: Buy current iphone?

by filmore123 - 5/15/08 11:10 AM

Would it be a good idea to buy the current iphone or wait for the newer one?

A: Wait

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:15 AM

First of all, it's going to be hard to find one, anyway. They're sold out all over the U.S.

But wait a month to see what shakes out with iPhone 2.0.

Q: ipod touch

by koztastic - 5/15/08 11:09 AM

i've heard rumors about the 8 gb ipod touch being discontinued and the 16 gb being lowered to $299. any truth to that and if so when should we expect it?

A: Maybe

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:14 AM

I wouldn't be surprised to see that happen. Apple is expected to hold an iPod event around September, which would be a logical time for that to be introduced. Supporting three configurations, 8, 16, and 32, might not make sense.

Q: Apple TV

by Marko72 - 5/15/08 11:08 AM

Hey T,
will the next new Apple TV integrate a DVD player? If so do you think it will support Blu-Ray discs?

A: No

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:13 AM

I think Apple wants to promote the iTunes Store with Apple TV, they've said they want to replace the DVD player with Internet-delivered content through Apple TV. I bet MacBooks and iMacs will get Blu-Ray before the end of the year, though.

Q: can..

by haub123 - 5/15/08 11:07 AM

a mac book join a domain? and How? my work mandates windows, but I like macs and I have seen people on wifi and print using Mac OS X. also, do you know anything about 10.6?

A: Not sure what you mean

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:13 AM

I'm not a tech support guy, but the only thing preventing a Mac from working in your office is the IT folks, not the Mac itself.

I expect to hear more about 10.6 in June at WWDC.

Q: Cinema Displays

by vac373 - 5/15/08 11:06 AM

Hello.

I know this has been asked a million times. Does Apple plan on updating their cinema displays? And if so, when might that be?

A: A billion times!

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:12 AM

I have no idea, I've predicted new Cinema Displays several times and been wrong each time. They'll get around to it at some point.

Q: Upcomeing MacBookpro

by The Zach101 - 5/15/08 11:05 AM

I was looking into a MacBook Pro but I dont want to buy one and the next day another newr cheaper and better model comeing out, So i was wondering if there is any rumors or any new Macbok pro comeing out soon in the next few months. Also For my new Mac Book Im useing it for College and Multi Media editing (Photo Video) and I was wondering what a good configuration is for this type of use with the Mac Book Pro.

A: hard to tell

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:11 AM

There will probably be redesigned MacBook Pros, or at least tweaked ones, before the end of the year. But if you need a computer, buy one; there will always be somethign better if you wait, but then you'll never be able to buy anything.

Any MacBook Pro should be able to handle that kind of workload. Video-editing is processor-intensive, so if you have some extra cash get the faster processor.

Q: Apples Notebook Product Quality and Innovation

by poolin1243 - 5/15/08 11:05 AM

Hey Tom-

I think this question is on the minds of a lot of apple notebook users:

What can be said about the recent stint of apple notebook problems in the past few years, with the advent of the macbook and macbook pro, as well as the air? From a personal standpoint, I am on my third Macbook Pro, a 3000.00 investment that has been replaced twice!

Also, there hasn't been a design upgrade in years for the Macbook Pro, do you think Apple is just going to stick with it?

A: As Apple grows, that will happen

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:09 AM

It's much harder to maintain the quality of any mass-produced product as the quantities grow. Apple still receives excellent marks as a whole on quality from places like Consumer Reports, so I still think they are a pretty good option, quality-wise.

I think there will be a design upgrade in short order, once the next-generation iPhone is release.

Q: Expensive macs

by filmore123 - 5/15/08 11:05 AM

People keep saying leopard is better than vista and macs are better than pcs, but they forget one very important factor which is price. I can get an hp laptop with 2.1 core 2 duo, 3gb ram, 250gb hdd, hdmi, webcam, dedicated graphics card, card reader and many other options for a little over $1,100 while a macbook pro starts from more than $2000. Why are macs so expensive and why doesn't apple put leopard on other manufacturers' computers?

A: Different brands, different prices

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:08 AM

I'm not sure you should compare the MacBook Pro to that HP laptop, maybe the MacBook would be better, but that's not really what you asked.

I think you have to include the value of Mac OS X when you think about buying a Mac. That's worth something.

That's also why Apple's not inclined to put Leopard on other computers, because it's a benefit for them to have it under their control, and because they can make promises about reliability and stability because they control the hardware configurations.

Q: Any good alternatives to itunes

by PastorDClift - 5/15/08 11:03 AM

Hi Tom. I've got an old ipod and used Ephpod software to manage it. My wife got me the new 160 gb classic and Ephpod doesn't support newer models. I really hate itunes. Do you have any itune alternatives you would suggest for Windows XP? Thanks! David

A: RealPlayer?

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:05 AM

I have used their software in the past to manage my iPod, I personally found that iTunes works better, but different people like different things.

You might want to check out Download.com for music player software, there might be a couple of free or low-cost options out there that I'm not aware of.

Q: What about the Mac Mini?

by bigpetis - 5/15/08 11:01 AM

Hey Tom,

I know everyone here wants to talk about the 3G iPhone, but what about my favorite computer, the Mac Mini. Does Apple have any plans to extend the life or update the specs?

A: Excellent question

by Tom Krazit - 5/15/08 11:03 AM

The Mac mini has been written off as dead several times, but it keeps kicking. It's not clear what Apple's plans are for that device, since they've been so focused on the iPhone this past year.

I think they'll keep it around for a while longer, as it's a nice option for some buyers, and doesn't require a lot of time/engineering on Apple's part to keep it current. Intel's new Montevina processor/chipsets would be a likely addition.

A: Hi everybody, I'm here!

Tom, real quick question. I have a stubborn friend who just refuses to take one opinion, so I'm asking yours. His son is going to school to cover all the bases computer engineering, computer science, and IT. Hey need advice on getting a computer
I'm currently in school for graphic design and I'm almost done. So I want to get a really nice computer for my career. I was thinking of the highest end iMac. But I want to know if thats my best choice or can I get something better for the price. I priced the iMac to around $2,400. I currently have the iBook G4 buts working on huge files in photoshop and illustrator is just so frustrating and can take forever! Maybe going with PC an option? Or maybe I really don't need the most expensive iMac and can get the mid range one. Money is really tight, can you help me out?

Mac Ads Yet Again
Not really a question, but a comment.

Initially I loved the Mac ads, but as more come out I'm fonder of the PC character than the Mac character and I don't think that is Apples intention.

Apple don't make any Macs for gamers? Shouldn't they at least have a shot?
Will movies rented via the Apple TV ever support captions?

iPhone tethering
No, it can't be tethered. But maybe in June with the software update. Hell, anything is possible with that update.

Easy to use
Why does Apple insist on having the Mac OS X option of closing all a program's windows but having the program still run. This is not intuitive and easy for a new and non-technical user.

Question about software for new Mac owners
A big drawback for many people switching to Macs is that going into a store for software is impossible or at best a poor selection (unless its an Apple Store). Even being able to Bootcamp Windows has not solved this entirely. Can you recommend a good place to research and find Mac software other than Apple's own website?

Apple Bluetooth Headset
Any news on an upgrade to the Apple Bluetooth Headset?
I'm planning on getting the Jawbone 2, but if apple makes improvements, I'd hold out.

Mid Mac
I need a mac that is upgradeable (easily accessed case, memory slots) but I don't need 8 cores like the mac pro has. My current G4 933 was 1400 when I bought it, just a little more than my PC bought 1 yr earlier (P3 500 - with "second best" options)

Now, a Mac Pro is way over 2000 and you can still get a "second best" PC for a little over 1000.

Apples midline is the imac, and I just don't want an all-in-1, esp one that is not really upgradeable.

Why doesn't apple make a iMac spec. computer in a tower form factor?

.mac
Hi Tom

I've been having problems with my .mac server for months now. I've been reading on different blogs that others are encountering the same problems e.g. not being able to send emails. Have you heard of anything? Also is .mac up for an upgrade?

Old Macs
I've got old Mac G4s stacking up in my corner, does Apple have a trade-in program like HP?

iPhone hearsay
I put this question on the forum but now i want to hear from you. i have a friend who says the iphone is going to become a tmobile phone too and keeps saying that others have heard the same thing. but i continue to say that with the 5 year agreement between apple and att that this is impossible. unless i see or hear proof.

also, what do you think will be the biggest improvement on the new iphones. i already have one and want a new one. do you think it would be worth it?

Sync an iPhone at multiple locations
I have a computer at work that I add music to. A quick sync with my iPhone will load up the music I want to listen to while I'm driving home. When I go home I transfer my purchases to that computer. If I buy more music at home and sync... my entire ipod is erased and all the music is reloaded. Why? Is there a way to sync and iPhone at multiple locations without the reformat?

The Apple Psystar Clone
Now that CNet has reviewed it at http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/psystar-open-computer/4505-3118_7-32978558.html would you care to comment about it?

As to me, it's a great time to buy stock in Apple's legal firm.

Unlocked Iphones and will The Enterprise support work on another Carrier
Its no secret that many Iphones have been bought to be unlocked and that many are being used on other networks other than AT&T. Theoretically, If you happen to buy an iphone and get it unlocked, will the enterprise support still work, since that is a Network issue

best non standard software for a mac
Tom,

What do you feel is the best piece of software that should come on every Mac standard? Quicksilver? Or is it a productivity suite like iWork or Office?

iTunes
Do you know why you can't download and watch HD movies from iTunes on a iMac. It's my understanding that you have to have Apple TV to watch HD iTunes movies, but that just doesn't seem to make sense to me; especially after spending the extra bucks for a 24 inch monitor.

iPhone update
...only because it needs to be asked...

Thanks!

Cinema Displays
Hello.

I know this has been asked a million times. Does Apple plan on updating their cinema displays? And if so, when might that be?

Apples Notebook Product Quality and Innovation

Expensive macs
People keep saying leopard is better than vista and macs are better than pcs, but they forget one very important factor which is price. I can get an hp laptop with 2.1 core 2 duo, 3gb ram, 250gb hdd, hdmi, webcam, dedicated graphics card, card reader and many other options for a little over $1,100 while a macbook pro starts from more than $2000. Why are macs so expensive and why doesn't apple put leopard on other manufacturers' computers?

Any good alternatives to itunes
Hi Tom. I've got an old ipod and used Ephpod software to manage it. My wife got me the new 160 gb classic and Ephpod doesn't support newer models. I really hate itunes. Do you have any itune alternatives you would suggest for Windows XP? Thanks! David

What about the Mac Mini?
Hey Tom,

I know everyone here wants to talk about the 3G iPhone, but what about my favorite computer, the Mac Mini. Does Apple have any plans to extend the life or update the specs?
