It does my heart well to see more than 50% of the people responding to this poll are not drinking the "let's exhalt Apple" media Kool-Aid. This is America, so those that worship Apple are free to do so. What's so cool is that most don't. At least Micro$oft, Sony, HP, Dell, Alienware and the rest of Apple's competitors produce products that work with each other to one extent or another.
Apple = quality hardware that is severely overpriced
Apple = limited choices in software
Apple = proprietary everything
Apple = the worst choice
Apple wants your money and your soul.
Well, this list includes my two children:
iPod shuffle (2)
iPod video (2)
iPhone 16GB
iMac G4
Mac Mini (Intel Core Solo)
Macbook (Intel Dual core)
Those who disparage Apple do so as a cheap shot or as a means to justify what they already own.
Yes Apple is too expensive - yes there is "value add" (a real estate term) in their products.
I have owned Macs since the Fat Mac - and have owned and used MSWindows machines since 1997. I greatly prefer the the Macs.
I must say I don't use Vista - XP Pro is my poison.
It is a good thing not all want Apple products - competition is a good thing in our market economy. Choice is a good thing in life.
This discussion reminds me of teenagers discussing their favorite brand of beer - they are so serious about it. And then the brewmeister changes the formula and the parties still hold their old positions. Neither one really doing anything but sticking to an emotional stand.
Well I don't have a need or want a portable music player. The same with a cell phone. And when I bought my first computer, many many years ago, everyone told me to get a PC because there was much more in the way of software and peripherals for a PC than a Mac. I've never found a need to switch, although I have been curious about the Macs.
I recently won an Ipod Nano 4G, Although it has the capabilty to store songs 99 cents each and up, movies $9.99 each and up my pockets aren't deep enough. The free material I sampled (Podcasts, audio books etc.) was either months out of date or loaded with commercials or both. The worst part however, was the AWFUL TINNY SOUND Quality. No amount of EQ tweaking, or switching earphones could come within 10% of the quality of my ancient CD's and Koss Pro 4AA headphones. ROCK ON DEEP BASS! That Ipod Nano Junk is Ebay HISTORY!
I will never buy an Apple product. They are by far the greatest waste of time, money and effort I have ever seen. They are tremendously overpriced in every respect and are very software-restrictive. I really look down on anybody who's been swayed by Apple's marketing schemes. Why any sane and non-self-conscious person would want anything made by Apple is beyond me. For every Apple product there is a cheaper more efficient alternative. Apple is like Boss is to the audio-enthusiast market, pure hyped-up garbage. The ignorance of some Mac users concerning PCs astounds me beyond belief. The use of straight out lies in Apple's marketing is unbelievably shameful because of the sheer bluntness of their deception, which in my opinion surpasses even the worst of tech companies, if not any company in any industry. People have bought in Apple products because they've molded the name into a fad/fashion icon. Apple products are a symbol of status, nothing else. Their functionality doesn't even come secondary to this. Attention to this crucial field is completely abysmal!
Yeah, I REALLY hate Apple. Just try and rip me apart you lunatic Apple-bots! Try me! I'm beyond confident that I can rip apart any one of your nonsensical arguments! GWAHHHHHHH!!!!
I got my first iPod (a 160Gb Classic) about a month ago. I got it because I didn't have to pay for it. I cashed in some credit card points in the rewards catalog. There was no way I'd earn enough to get that flat screen TV but figured a 160Gb iPod wasn't too bad. I could have waited a little longer and saved up for a 16Gb iPod Touch, but figured the Classic was enough for me.
So if you are not buying because of the price, check if your credit card has a rewards program because some have Apple products (iPods, iPhones, MAC and Air computers, iTunes cards, accessories, etc.)
I'm not so much a hater that I wouldn't accept one for free. I'm not saying they are totally non-functional. They do their jobs just fine - but there are much better options if you're actually paying money out of your own pocket.
Mac IIsi
MacBook Pro
iPod Shuffle 1st gen.
iPod Nano 2nd gen.
i hate apple so bad. they never completely cover there items, and they rush there products out without properly testing them. They always have so many issues when stuff is release & that shouldnt be happening if its a new product. when you buy something it should work for 1 or 2 yrs until it might start having issues. there stuff is so proprietary. me being a computer tech have even seen it crash peoples PCs. Any MP3 player should just be able to be plugged in and the data or music transfered to it. it should have a smart enough program to organize the music without having to use itunes(which sucks anyways). i bought my MP3 player for 120 dollars and it does pretty much everything a ipod would do and more. my batteries last longer then a ipod. plus mine i can use to transport data off a computer onto a another computer. so i can use it for school use as well besides just using it for music. but anytime i hear someone wanting to buy ipod i refer them to other companys unless they want issues. o and ipod are a rip off for the price.
7-8
1 aluminum Intel iMac, 1 white Intel iMac, 1 G4 iMac (Pixar lamp look), 1 G4 iBook, 1 3rd gen iPod, 1 Nano, 1 very old IIvx that still works!
I have own an appleII, IIe, LCIII, 5100, G4, + ipod. My G4 (Sawtooth) has been upgraded & updated to use the OS 10.5 system. I know that the next upgrade, I will go with an Apple laptop. I also have a PC laptop, that I call the "Brick". Except for the dial up internet that I have, my mac has out-performed my pc even before the upgades.
Smug obnoxious commercials acting like apple products don't have problems is just the latest, but most visible reason I dislike apple products. The fact they seem to think just because Steve Jobs is involved it magically works?
I got screwed by apple once, my employer got screwed by on a bigger scale, I will have nothing to do with them. Thier propritary DRM on music is another manifistation (sp?) of this cultural mindset of "shut up and drink the cool aid".
I am a member of a Final Cut Users Group, and am surounded by apples. I watch every month where this supposidly superior operating system pukes on the shoes of it's presenters, and yet they all act suprised!
Yes they are a good product, but not the Be All End All that they would like the public to believe.
Let me start with a little of my background. I have my undergraduate degree in Computer Science, my Master's degree in Technology Management. I work in a large Information Technology organization that utilizes almost every imaginable OS and hardware possible. I mention all this to give a little credence to my comments.
1) Compatibility
Compatibility comes down to standards and what peripherals and systems support what standards (whether it is mp3, ACC, WMA, etc) Microsoft has their proprietary standard, Apple has theirs, mp3 was created by a conglomeration (including ATT-Bell Labs, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mp3). Everyone has their standard. Apple is compatible with mp3, ACC, WMA, etc. The question is why are the other systems not as compatible and open? Apple cannot control what the other peripherals do. They can control things like DRM; however, my guess is that this is not a requirement of Apple, but more a requirement of the Music Industry. After all, Apple did not sue individual people to keep them from downloading music. If you are talking beyond iTunes, I do not believe most programs that are on Linux or UNIX will work on Windows and vice versa. So to think that there is any more compatibility with Windows and UNIX is incorrect. In fact, Apple does allow other operating systems to run on their hardware. I have both Windows and Apple running on my Mac Book. If you are talking about an open consortium of people that are allowed to write the OS, there are few of those, Linux is an example, and that even has versions that are proprietary.
2) Openness
This is an interesting talking point. I work day in and day out to figure out how to make different systems interact with each other. I cannot say there is any truly "open" system. Some are less expensive than others, but open is a misnomer. Open insinuates that anything can work and anyone can work in that system or software suite and that is not the case with any system or suite of software. Again, if you are talking about the idea of collaborative programming, then there are really only a few systems out there and one that is well known. To that point, Apple's OS is actually a flavor of UNIX with a nice User Interface. That is the reason I started using Apple because I wanted to play with some UNIX shell scripting and Perl Scripting on something that looked nice.
3) Tweaking
Because Apple runs on UNIX, you can tweak the OS to your heart’s content. Those people that think you cannot, simple are ignorant to what is available and possible. In fact, I personally think you can do more or the same amount of tweaking as Windows.
4) Pricing
I wrote a post earlier that basically stated that Apple is more than just a computer. When you buy an Apple you are paying for the aesthetics of the product as much as you are paying for the actual hardware and software. Those aesthetics are going to cost more. If you are not interested in those aesthetics, then an Apple is not for you. Since I work with a lot of different systems in my work life, I want something at home that looks sleek, works and is fun. I get that from Apple.
