The correct link to Jesper Johansson's blog (in my above post) should have read as follows:
"Does AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3?"

My apologies..
Carol
We have tried to install SP3 3 times. Each time our PC has rebooted and locked up. We were able to get into safe mode and uninstall it. MS Tech Support has responded with the following babble:
"Before moving on, I would like to confirm if the system is preinstalled by the computer manufacturer (which it was).
"If this is the case, I would like to explain that this issue can occur since the same image to Intel-based computers is deployed on the computer which is non-Intel-based. Hence, the computer cannot boot up properly."
They then go on to tell us to try and disable IntelPPM and give us directions on how to do so and wind up by saying if that doesn't work we may have to "recover the system." This sounds pretty ominous to me.
We have an HP Presario with Windows XP Media Center.
Has anyone else observed this problem and can anyone tell me what the MS Tech is talking about?
Thanks
I had no problems installing SP3 on my Windows Home XP Dell desktop. I can't remember if I uninstalled SP2 first but once SP3 was installed which took about 30 minutes on my low level DSL connection I rebooted my computer then went to Control Panel to check and there it was listed, SP3.
.....SP3. Problem was not easy to solve, but in the end it was simple when I knew how.

I hope it is of some help to you.
Your problem has been pretty widespread since Windows XP SP3 was released.
You may find the response below is helpful. You may care to stick with SP2 for a while and wait until they sort it out.

We'd like to provide more information and address reports you may have heard about "continuous reboot loops" occurring upon the update to Windows XP SP3.
After investigation, we’ve determined this problem occurs on AMD-based machines with Windows XP images that were originally captured by an OEM on an Intel-based machine. The problem is a registry value, present on images created w/ Intel processors, that causes a driver (intelppm.sys) to load at boot. When intelppm.sys attempts to load on an AMD-based system upon the install of SP3, it causes a blue screen and the continuous reboot. We’re planning to add a filter to prevent Windows Update from offering SP3 to affected systems and are investigating a fix. Any customers affected by this issue should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for assistance. More information is available in KB88372 and here.
On a related note, we've heard a few questions about SP3’s distribution. To clarify our earlier post, SP3 is currently available as a High Priority update on the Windows Update website. This means that if you go to WU and do an express or custom install - you should see SP3 listed. We’re planning to begin automatic distribution (via AU) of SP3 sometime in early summer.
Hope this is helpful,
-Microsoft Update Team
For your info.

After updating to SP3, my computer went into a reboot loop. I was able to disable the reboot, see the blue screen. I booted into safe mode, uninstalled SP3 and contacted both HP and Micro$oft. Both gave me the same fix. You have to modify the registry and change a value for IntelPPM from a 1 to a 4. The registry fix is here:
1.Restart your computer in Safe Mode.
2.Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Intelppm
4.In the right pane, right-click the Start entry, and then click Modify.
5.In the Value data box, type 4, and then click OK.
6.Quit Registry Editor.
7.Restart your computer.
Before you make any changes, you should export this registry key so you can fix it if something should go amiss with the modification.
I hope this helps.![]()
I too downloaded service pack 3 update on my almost 2 year old HP Presario Media Center AMD computer with XP Home edition and it crashed. It would not get out of the startup loop. I repeatedly went to "safe" mode to try to return it to an earlier restore point or uninstall the service pack. Nothing worked. I finally gave up and just did a "restore" on my computer which was totally aggravating as it said I wouldn't loose this or that but I lost everything. I had to re-install most software, anti-virus, rebuild address books, documents and files. This was totally aggravating but I don't think it just happens to AMD computers as my laptop is also an AMD and older than the HP Presario and I have an office Compaq computer, 5 years old with XP Home and an AMD. Both loaded service pack 3 just fine with no problems at all. So why is this happening, no answers from Microsoft?
"So why is this happening, no answers from Microsoft?"
Microsoft did not create the issue. HP modified the system so the answer to why is known all over.
-> But let's move on. HP does tell you some steps to perform BEFORE you install SP3. Did you do that?

Not everyone will know to look before they leap.

So I did my upgrade via Windows Update last night, everything went smoothly so that's good to know, considering some of the issues that have cropped up with some PCs.

Hi Robert,
This is Richard from the Trend Micro Escalation Team. With regards, to
your concern, you do not have to worry about the vunerability that is
being detected in your system. The vulnerability that is being detected
are just small fragments of the upgraded softwares of your operating
system. Just make sure that your Microsoft windows is always updated
because they are the ones creating the patches.
Regards,
Trend Micro, Inc.
