Trouble getting sound from PS3 to Panasonic TH50PZ85U

by aspeer - 5/11/08 7:09 PM

I just purchased the Panasonic, and am mostly happy with it. For some reason, however, I cannot get it to play sound from Blu Ray movies off of a PS3. Regular DVDs play just fine. I have tried all 3 HDMI inputs and just about every audio setting accessible through the menu.

I have an Apple TV hooked up to the Panasonic (HDMI as well) and sound comes through just fine on HD movies. This PS3 was previously hooked up to a Sony DLP TV through HDMI and sound came through just fine on Blu Ray movies.

The Panasonic's menu does not provide for a range of sound reproduction options (Dolby 5.1, DVD audio, etc), it simply assumes sound from an HDMI source fits within a catch all "digital" category. I would think that it would have the ability to downconvert newer, fancier digital signals such as 7.1 to ordinary stereo sound, though. This is a 2008 model tv for Pete's sake.

I could just hook sound up through an amplifier, but I have limited space available where the TV is placed and I would really prefer to use the TV's speakers, if possible.

Any idea what is going on? Is it really a problem with the PS3 and am I unfair to blame Panasonic?

It's an oversight in the PS3

Go into the PS3 "Settings", choose Audio Settings, then you get a choice of either audio out from HDMI or Digital/Optical. Choose HDMI. This has been a gripe of mine ever since I bought a PS3, in that it does NOT output audio simultaneously for both HDMI and Optical Digital at the same time. You need to choose ONE method of audio output. Sony needs to seriously address this.

While you are correct in what you said Dan...

that shouldn't be isn't the issue here since he has said that he is not using a receiver and only wants to use the TV's speakers.

Not really sure what the culprit could be here. All I can say is to double check all the settings again. If that doesn't work, it could just be one of those weird instances where there is an odd incompatibility issue with HDMI devices. It does happen, and usually there is no rhyme or reason.

Good luck

Correct Mike, but

I just wanted to make sure that his PS3 Audio-Out settings were set to HDMI and didn't accidently get changed to Optical-Out. If Sony had addressed this issue, there wouldn't be an issue because the PS3 would be sending audio to all outputs simultaneously, but it doesn't. But, thinking to other issues, could it simply be an HDMI cable issue? Is the HDMI cable seated correctly? Could the Panasonic not be hand-shaking properly with the HDMI connected to the PS3? My Sony TV doesn't see the HDMI from my OPPO sometimes, so I turn off the TV with the OPPO on, the I turn the TV on and everything works. Weird it only happens sometimes.

Dan, you bring up a good point/issue

by jostenmeat - 5/12/08 12:38 PM In reply to: Correct Mike, but by Dan Filice

It is better to fire up the player first. HDMI handshake issues are rare or non-existent for some, but this does help avoid any issue.

In recent months, I've picked up hi-def players, HDMI capable receiver, and a hi-end display. So, now my cheapo Harmony 520 is used only for commanding the system, but turning on/off I do manually. After all, Onkyo's don't come with 12v triggers.

I turn on BD, then Onkyo, then NAD amplifier. In that order, waiting a few seconds between each component. I turn the system off in reverse order (mostly for amplifier/ protecting speakers' sake).

p.s. I wonder if it will only be a matter of time before Sony will fix your issue Dan. If it means that much to you (which it seems it does), you might spend some time in voicing your consumer concerns at owner's threads. The engineers do listen sometimes, and if they hear of your complaint enough times, I bet they'll fix it. Well, this appears to be the case with Panasonic owner's threads in any case. :)

Sony's Owner Threads

Meat,

I did post my question and gripe on the PS3 form on the Sony site and it generated a huge amount of response. There were a lot of people saying how silly it was for me to want audio on the TV speakers, but there were many more responses that agreed with my point of view, especially since other stand-alone DVD players push audio out of all connections simultaneously. We'll see if Sony ever addresses it. I'm used to the issue now and it's just an annoyance rather than an issue that gets my blood pressure boiling. But when I see a post that might involve this stupididty, I like to chime in.

Dan

Perhaps it has to do with what is being sent to the TV?

by palbanes - 5/12/08 12:37 PM In reply to: Trouble getting sound from PS3 to Panasonic TH50PZ85U by aspeer

have you tried changing the settings on the PS3 between uncompressed audio and bitstream.

Many folks use an AV receiver to process the compressed (bitstream) audio. Otherwise, have the PS3 send uncompressed PCM audio.

BTW, have you downloaded and installed the latest patch for the PS3?
I believe it is version 2.3

Thanks to all....problem fixed.

by aspeer - 5/12/08 12:58 PM In reply to: Perhaps it has to do with what is being sent to the TV? by palbanes

It WAS a PS3 issue after all.

Looking into the Audio Out options for the PS3 this morning I saw that they were set to "automatic". There is apparently no handshaking taking place between the PS3 and the Panasonic because the "automatic" selection was Linear PCM and not any of the standard audio outputs. I changed to manual Setup in order to ensure standard Dolby 5.1 sound output and presto, sound came on.

It still seems odd that the same setup created no problems for ordinary DVD audio output...yet it totally messed up Blu Ray audio output.

I won't worry about it, though, as long as it works.

Thanks again to everyone for your helpful input. You got me pointed in the right direction.

Regards,

Andrew.

well, a DVD player

will not send out lossless audio. Even if sent as LPCM.

a PS3 will send out lossless audio if selected to do so. Im unfamiliar with the PS3.

"as long as it works"... but in case you were curious. TV's can't handle lossless audio, shoot, even many receivers cannot.
