That's like the 40d vs XSi arguments. My "opinion" comes down to which one you feel most comfortable with. If your new to DSLRs then the D40x will do probably everything you would hope for and much much more. The D300 is better, but you might not be able to take advantage of the extras the D300 offers. Think of the size of each and the feel and decide which one you like better. The price difference between the two could buy you some incredible glass.

Really, learning to take better photos will increase your photos astronomically, not necessarily the equipment behind the lens.

If they look comparable to you, then you need the D40

The D300 is an expensive semi-professional camera. The D40 (which I have) is an excellent and low-cost consumer camera. The D40x is the D40 with some wasteful extra megapixels, a slightly faster burst speed (3/sec vs. 2.5/sec), and a higher price. I'd go with the D40, it's available on Amazon and elsewhere with the kit lens plus a telephoto 55-200mm Vibration Reduction lens for about $630.

Which is better? NIkon D300 or Nikon D40x?

rixianne, if you want a truthful statement ask our member Jump1127.
He has used both cameras and will give you an evaluation even on the mighty Nikon D3.
I have just purchased a Nikon D300. I also looked at a new Canon D40.
My choice was the Nikon D300. I own both Nikon and Canon camers.
I thought that the D300 had more to offer even at $1800 body only.
I happen to like the Nikkor lenses over the Canon lenses because I have had excellent results with a Nikon 606DSR-35mm in the past. As a matter of fact I have purchased three Digital Canons. A S400, SD500 and a G7.
All great cameras and to use them for what you want them for. In my case, a travel camera.
If I want a pro DSLR camera I chose the Nikon D300 and will go with Nikkor lenses. Cannon lenses are fantastic also and less expensive compared to Nikkor. One of the best lenses is a simple 50mm Nikkor f1.2 that costs $180. Not much glass. A 50mm f1.8 costs $130(which I have). There are comparable Canon lenses also.

What kind of bread do you like. French or Italian?
I like both. Depends on your preferences and budget. In Italy I like Italian bread. In France I like Parisian.
