Toyota highlander hybrid

by REA999 - 5/1/08 10:23 AM

Hey guys, considering buying an SUV, and preferrably a hybrid .. how's the new toyota highlander hybrid for this... another one i am considering is the Prius which is not an SUV -- would this handle well in the snow?Would really appreciate any input.. Thanks

I wasn't really crazy about the new (2008) Highlander Hybrid:

Toyota made it bigger than the old one, and it's pretty expensive. But you can get it with all-wheel-drive. The Prius doesn't handle particularly well, and I would be skeptical about its snow performance, although I haven't driven it in the wet. You might also want to look at the Ford Escape Hybrid. It's cheaper than the Highlander and can be had in all-wheel-drive. It uses the same hybrid system as the Highlander and Prius.

What about the subaru wrx?

by REA999 - 5/1/08 8:37 PM In reply to: re: Toyota highlander hybrid by wcunning CNET staff

How's the subaru wrx hatckback ( I donot mean the wrx sti) i mean i need a reseasonably priced all wheel drive for diving in a place which get s a lot of snow in the winter months... Is the ford escape hybrid really that good? I hve seen the pictures, looks very rugged..i am sure it would handle well in the snowy adverse conditions..I am confused.. need some input.. thanx!

Stick with the Highlander

by tramit - 5/1/08 11:05 PM In reply to: Toyota highlander hybrid by REA999

If price is no option then I would rather pick the highlander. The Escape I would leave last because it feels kinda under powered for the weight that its moving around. The highlander has more of a kick and the fit and finish I would say is a bit better all that said its because it cost more to begin with. If you don't mind giving all you power and speed out the window go with the escape hybrid and save some money.

I really like the highlander - it looks smart and gives u a good mileage - also the ford escape is rugged and looks very big and bulky - am I right? at least the toyota has some shape and style to it!!!
does anyone know how much these cost?

leasing and cost

by wcunning CNET staff - 5/2/08 4:54 PM In reply to: Is leasing a better option? by REA999

I'm sure leasing would be an option, though I don't know how much that would cost. As for the price of the cars, the Highlander Hybrid runs over $40k when reasonably well equipped, while the Escape Hybrid might peek over $30k.

As for the Subaru WRX Wagon, it's a good choice. I've noticed in ski areas around California that people driving in from the coast take big SUVs up into the mountains, but the people that actually live there favor Subarus.

Subaru's

by REA999 - 5/11/08 9:16 AM In reply to: leasing and cost by wcunning CNET staff

I looked at the forester and it looks awesome on the internet - checked it out in the showroom and it looks odd -- the wrx looks rather sleek with its 5 door version - they say it gives u 22 - 25 mpgs is that how much u get? also which one would be recommended for driving in the snow... i mean they are both AWD's .. any advantages of one over the other?
cheers

Escape / Highlander... Hybrid

by mam361 - 9/22/08 10:46 AM In reply to: Toyota highlander hybrid by REA999

My wife has an Escape Hybrid ('08)4wd I have a Highlander Hybrid ('08) 4wd. While I haven't driven mine in the snow, I can attest the Escape handles fantastic in snow. The HH is larger, more comfortable and more of a luxury vehicle. I'm getting 28-30 mixed hwy/city compared to my wife who gets about 28-29 mixed and about 32 hwy.

Gotta tell you - in spite of what I read people saying they wouldn't recommend it, I would highly recommend it. It's luxurous, fun to drive, gets better than what they said for mileage, has so many cool features. It's a very well thought out vehicle.

It is more than the Escape, but they are two different vehicles.
