by k2uri - 5/9/08 12:26 PMI have satisfactory web speed, typically 3.22MBs downloadload and 1.0MBs upload.
But that only kicks in after the page is connected. I Typically use Firefox 2.0 but also use IE7 and opera at times.
While I usually use Vista, I get the same thing on other computers running XP and OSX
When I go to open a page, everything seems to cycle for a while (say 20-30 secs) and then things take off.
But the slow to start aspect offsets the advantages of faster speeds except when moving very large files.
I have recently shifted from AT&T DSL to AT&T fiber/copper cable.
Where do you think my problem comes from

Go to xp/vista
run a Ping against google.com
Command
ping google.com -t
This will run for a while.. Let it run for about 5-10min
hit cntrl+c to stop it...
Once it is stopped see what the %lost is, or the number lost out of another number..
should look something like
1500 recieved 5 lost -- normal
if you see out of 1500 and you see 500 lost, you have a line issue somewhere.. either can be router, modem, cable, or outside at the d-mark...
Wireless?
If it is wireless, make sure you dont have the router by any CRT tv's
microwaves, 2.4ghz cordless phones, or any other device that may cause interfeance. (spelling sux)
Also,
DSL and i believe fiber have PPoE
Which needs to stay alive, if not it works on the same idea as pots (plain old telephone service)..
This is a setting in your router you will need to set to "Keep alive" if you dont want delay.
Also in XP/Vista
you will want to make sure you have power saver shut off on your Nic...
Classic desktop..
Right click on My network places
choose properties
press configure button next to nic card
click Power management tab
Unclick allow windows to disable this device...
Ok until boxes are closed...
