Hitachis are fine. WD does not have PMR. Seagate is the usual problem child, but their Momentus 5400.3 (or 7200.3) PMR drives are reliable.
The difference is this...
Acer Aspire 9300
Seagate Momentus 5400.2 : 15 MB/sec
Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (PMR): 25 MB/sec
an HP and a DELL
Western Digital 7200 RPM : 27 MB/sec
Hitachi K700 7200 RPM PMR: 39 MB/sec
Western Digital 7200 RPM Desktop drive: 55 MB/sec
Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM PMR desktop: 81 MB/sec
Western Digital 10,000 RPM desktop : 89 MB/sec
That's the difference PMR makes!
Thanks!!! I had never heard of PMR before, but I'll definitely look for it from now on when buying hdds. Has anyone else heard of it? How much does it affect performance?
Not much if thats all you use it for (NR)
