I bought a Dell laptop 15 months ago and a Dell desktop 12 months ago. Both run every piece of hardware and software that I have including shared printers, wireless LAN, wired LAN, X10 home automation and a bunch more.
Speed has not been an issue. In fact, they both boot faster than my office laptop that runs XP.
Office 2007 is also on both and is a huge improvement over the older version.
Have VISTA on two desktops and one laptop since 1/2008.
As a non techie, I've been impressed with the plug and play functionality of VISTA vs XP. It also is miles head of XP in screen displays.
In short, I'd recommend it.
CNET the censored forum ?
CNET told us in their email inviting us to this forum thread:
QUOTE
...... And if you have the temptation to post an anti-Microsoft statement, well, please don't--there are plenty of threads out in cyberspace that you can join to do that. ......
UNQUOTE.
So this CNET is now a censored forum.
Why should CNET order that ANY forum be free of criticism for THE product being discussed ? Are you creating the forum to get a fake endorsement for a useless product ?
N. M. Havewala.
It's not censorship, dude. The OP simply asked for people HAPPY with Vista to chime in and say so. What part of that do you not understand? There's plenty of Vista-bashing out there. Why would you want to post anti-MS comments in a thread specifically looking for positive comments?
It's not a thread for debating Vista as an OS. It's simply a thread asking people who aren't having the issues that get an overwhelming amount of punditocracy attention to say that they're doing just fine with Vista. And judging by the response this thread has gotten, I'd say there's a helluva lot of people that are fine with it.
Of course, you wouldn't know that by hearing the podcasters and tech bloggers rant on. Thankfully, this thread might encourage them to come down from the ivory towers where the view is apparently clouded and see what many (not all, of course) regular users really think as evidenced by their postitive experiences.
There's no stopping you from starting your own thread with exactly the opposite appeal: asking people who hate Vista to post and say so and why. So, be my guest. No one's going to censor you.
I am working with Vista for over a year and I think it is not as bad as people think. For me it is working great.I have no problems with any of my programs that I installed on Vista. It was a matter of getting used to Vista's layout and how to use it. But once I figured that out, I love it. I updated service pack 1 and it is working great. No problems at all.
I've been using Vista Business on 3 of my 4 computers since October 2007 and have never been happier.
Once Vista is up and running, it's great. Getting it up and running can be... interesting!
I tried to do an "up-grade" when installing it. That was a "no go".
Once I re-formatted the hard drive and did a clean install.... everything was OK.
Vista SP1 also went in OK... and I did NOT have to turn off (or disable) my AVG, FREE, anti-virus!
Ofcourse, I don't run old, antique, software and/or accessories.
I have Vista running on 2 computers with motherboards that are about 4 years old... and on one computer with a new (2008) motherboard. All 3 computers have either 512MB or 256MB video cards and all computers have 2GB or RAM... with Intel CPU's of P4 2.8 to 3.0 GHz. The new motherboard is running a Core 2 Duo
All of my software is "recent" vintage...Microsoft Office 2003 or newer... the oldest software I am SUCCESSFULLY running is Adobe Photoshop v7.0. I also have Photoshop CS2 running on one machine.
The ONLY people that I know of with problems are those who are trying to run 10-year old software and hardware.
I've been away for a day and this topic grew from about 25 - 30 posts (after about a week) to over 140 virtually overnight! Did someone discover it and spam it or is this all genuine?
Purchased a Dell Vostro 1400 (2GB, 2MHz) with Vista Business last October. I'm an IT guy for 25 years, loaded the new Vostro with lots of my software, use the machine about 3 hours every day, carry it with me all the time. My Vista Business is faster than any of my XP's (and its not the Vostro doing that) I've never had a crash or a lock up even with the ton of development software loaded on the machine, its more fun to use than XP and except for the occasionally annoying permissions Vista asks for its a great operating system. Nicer, faster and more intuitive to use than my current Mac OS or any of my XP's. Considering I once ran WinNT 3.1 for more than a year on my personal business PC and I should hate MS for that, with Vista they have produced a great piece of OS code that should become the world standard as they evolve it.
I have had Vista 64bit Ultimate since it first came out, and I must say, it sucks to have to answser permissions for everything you try to do. I also turned off the Aero feature because it is a memory hog (and I have an HP dv6675us laptop, with 4GB RAM). In all, I don't see that it offers any real advantage over XP.
I bought an iPhone this year, and have been in the Apple store in MacArther Mall in Norfolk VA quite a few times since, and would really consider a Mac next time (I like the fact that you can run it in Windows mode for familiarity, but much of it is so intuititive it wouldn't matter).
Can anyone advise how to turn off permissions?
While I agree that there should be more done on drivers, it is usually the old accessories like printers that do not work with Vista. I can accept that. All in all Vista has been a good experience for me. It is faster than XP on my laptop and though sometimes a pain the security actually is nice as I feel safer browsing the internet. Most of the people bashing Vista have not really taken the time to set it up correctly by updating drivers or have not spent much time with it. While Microsoft does deserve bashing for much of what they do, Vista does not deserve it.
I have been using VISTA at home and at work ever sine it has come out and also through the Beta stages. i love it have had no problems with it for myself and at work we have only had ne printer driver problem that was fixed quickly and all new equipment purchased since July 2007 for work has had VISTA Business on it.
I use Vista 64 and love the memory capabilities. I can run multiple vmware instances and evrything runs very smoothly. It runs much faster than XP for my purposes. XP would only allow 3 GB's and casue much disk thrashing. Anyways I have been using it for a while and have no more problems with Vista than I would any other OS...
Vista gets a lot of bad press, but I believe its mainly because people don't like change. It is kind of drastic in a lot of regards having to look in a number of new places for programs, functions and customizations. MS Office 2007 was especially traumatic for a lot of people. Once you get the hang of it though the system works better than XP in my opinion (less crashes, faster functionality, smoother finish, etc..). So simply put, yes I'm part of the silent majority... though I'm slowly becoming less silent as time progresses.
I had not planned to upgrade on my existing four computers because of the cost involved. Windows XP Pro was working fine and I use some very expensive and highly specialized software. However, one of the notebooks I use needed to be replaced quickly. It came with Vista Home Premium. I am loving it. I had only one hardware issue on some very proprietary hardware which has been updated to run on vista and works great. I have one software issue which again is a very specialized program that it's maker says up front is not Vista compatable. I will just install it on one of my other machines until they come out with an upgrade and then switch it back to my preferred machine. But before that I will try the compatability wizzard because that is amazing in Vista.
The one main problem that I have with Vista Ultimate is with NERO.
My computer "solutions" keep\s telling me that I need to update to Nero 8.. I have Nero 8. Support tells me that this happens when you upgrade to Vista from XP. They say the only way to really enjoy all of Vista is to reformat hard drive and do a clean install of Vista so that little pieces of XP that stay behind when you update are not there to screw things up.
