What’s your personal experience with Vista?
- I own Vista and currently have little or no problems with it.
- I own Vista and currently have a lot of problems with it. (Please explain.)
- I don’t own Vista, but plan on upgrading to it soon.
- I don’t own Vista and never will, at least until I absolutely have no choice. (Why?)
Please keep this discussion civil--this discussion thread is not a MS bashing session. Thank you!
I bought a Dell XPS right after Windows Vista came out. So here I am today with existing issues. Basically one that really bugs me. That being, Energy Star compliant, which it is not.
I cannot set my computer to sleep after a certain time of inactivity, If I do, it will go into a mode where it won't awaken, but the fan never goes off. It will not start up where I left off, I have to do a hard restart.
The other issue is if I plan to go out of the office, and I want to manually but it to sleep, I can do it but again it goes to sleep but the fan is still running and I can't start it up again without doing a hard restart, which can damage software and hardware.
Dell tech support tells me, it is a Microsoft issue, but I bought the computer from Dell with Vista installed, I blame Dell and hold them responsible for this mess.
Other than that, there are some good issues and some bad issues that use up more of my time rather than save me time.
Since I am on the computer all day, every day, all this adds up.
Microsoft wants more money so they do a half baked job, unlike Apple, and charge high prices for it. The end user suffers in time and money.
Not a happy camper!
Yeah, it's a 'server' OS, but it seems to resolve all the annoyances I've had with Vista. I consider it the best version of windows available for the desktop.
What is it with Microsoft having to ask so many times if you REALLY want to copy move delete? I think once is enough, don't you? Also had to reconfigure it so that it even allowed me to delete a directory(folder).
I certainly wish that would be fixed and fixed soon. I don't know if they think we are totally ignorant or what, but no need to ask more than once if we "REALLY" want to delete, move, etc.
Honest I am serious I hadthe Vista PC from my frind as i did not want to cahnge the OFFICE 2007 The spellcheck was slow then i found that the VISTA was slow also, XP is very fast so is the win2003 office all use these as they find the new Vista has a good nmae but the rub is tortoise. My Vista Home Premium has slowed down some but I find that XP suffers the same problem over time. Once they get some more bugs fixed it should be OK. The only chronic problem I have is that Vista keeps losing the printer connection on the wireless network.
Vista Home Premium appears to be getting slower and slower. It is very noticeable when restarting/starting up. There was a time in the beginning when it was faster than my XP but now the XP runs circles around Vista. I do not know what can be done other than reloading; the problem with that is what do I reload. Any suggestions?
yeah, i used to be able many applications at once, with little or no problems, it seemed like vista was perfect, over time it got slower and slower. now i cant run firefox without major lag. ![]()
Blame Dell!!! I was very leery of Vista when I heard all the moaning and hand-wringing on the various websites. But, a crashed hard-drive on a 5 year old computer made me buy a new Gateway computer, that came with Vista.
I've been using that computer now for 6 months and it has had NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM!!! Fan works great, sleep mode does what it's supposed to do....
And let me just say, I LOVE VISTA!!!!!!!!!! I have a dual-core processor with 3 Gb; lightening fast, love all the little gadgets that come with Vista.
I'm sold! Others can keep XP; I'm Vista all the way!
I also bought a Dell XPS right around the time Vista came out, no major problems. I did notice it start to slow down, but there is an easy fix to that, BUY MORE RAM!! I think all it comes to is Vista is a resource hog, and you have to feed it properly. I got this PC with 2 gigs of RAM, and it had a lot of issues multi tasking, things would take forever to load. Got it 4 gigs of RAM (since this is the max 32bit version will be able to use) and no more problems!
Only other issue I had is one time Vista decided it had a better audio driver then the one I was using - and it couldn't even load it. Had to re-install old driver and everything was back to working fine again. I just got SP1 2 days ago, no problems yet (fingers crossed).

My question to you is - was the SP1 suggested to you by windows update or did you download it manually? I still don't have it and wonder if SP1 will fix my problem somehow but my windows update does not suggest it as an update and I don't want to risk it with a manual download because I read it can mess things up with the drivers.

Personally I have had the new OS Vista Home Premium on my computer for the last 9 months. No way would I want to go back to XP, although I had no problems with it at the time. Yet I find the new OS very stable. I do not use old programs which have been available for a number of years. I make sure that any programs presently installed on my computer are less than one year old. Additionally I made sure that my Canon MP800, which I did purchase in the year 2007, has the latest Vista driver installed , provided by Canon. My webcam works fine, and Office 2007 functions without any hitches. I own a dual core processor, 3GHz, with 4GB RAM, and downloaded Service Pack last month. My Windows Experience Index rating reads 5.0. I believe that Vista users, who appear to be unhappy, installed Vista without upgrading their computer itself. Some Vista users, I have spoken with, still only have 1Gb RAM, and even less. Older peripherals also may not function properly.

I know you say you have Home Premium and have no problems with it. Yet you say you don't use "...old pragrams which have been available for a number of years." Yet, shouldn't you be able to use older programs? I find that, even though I don't use my computer just for game playing, Vista Home Basic is a disaster when it comes to running games that worked absolutely fine on XP. True, there is the "Compatibility Wizard," but, frankly, and forgive the poor language, IT JUST DON'T WORK!!!!!! I've tried to use the Compatibility Wizard at least 15 times to install a variety of games that were excellent on XP, mostly to no avail! In fact, it is quite difficult to determine WHICH game will work! I have XP games that work fine on Vista Home Basic and others that are "rejected" as having "compatibility issues." I am SICK of that message. So, what can be done? XP games work at times, XP games are rejected as having a compatibility issue at other times AND the Compatibility Wizard doesn't work as one would expect it to work.
AND, to top it off, Microsoft doesn't seem to have any "fixes" to help out. Vista is not at the top of my list of good OS material at present. Microsoft, in my opinion, should have left well enough alone and just put more effort and money into improving XP more.
If you were to purchase a new Ford or GM vehicle, do you expect or request the dealer to replace any of the new electronic equipment and/or engine specifications with equipment installed on older models?
If you upgrade, my advice is to ensure you do not revert to older programs. Additionally, increase your RAM to at least 2GB, but preferably to 3GB, and you may also require to upgrade your video card.
