Next episode - Road Test - Building a Vista PC

by acedtect CNET staff - 5/6/08 4:16 PM

We're going to a good old fasioned road test episode.

Rafe just got done building a Vista PC, so he'll share his experience with that. I'm busy virtualizing Windows off my Boot Camp partition on the MacBook Pro, so I'll share a bit about that.

Got any road test stories of your own? Post 'em here or call or email

Vista. People who don't use it seem to hate it most.

I really hope you address how unfair everyone is being towards Vista. Sure, it deserves some criticism but the loudest complainers seem to be people who either have limited (or zero) experience with it, or people running it on the wrong hardware.

My $400 Dell and Macbook run Vista perfectly. So the point that should be made is that if you have a bad experience with Vista then it's probably more due to the hardware than the OS.

So rather than constantly slamming MS, how about going after the companies that refuse to properly update and test their drivers?

XP fever

I'm looking into buying my first laptop, and am finding myself seriously drawn to models that still come with XP. I've had my Vista desktop for over a year now, and while I agree with you that Vista is not that bad, I just know that equipped laptop RAM and Harddrive space will go farther under XP. The Aeroglass novelty has worn off, and there's not much more that it offers that I need at the moment.
My 2 cents.

Vista PC and Photoshop CS2?

by extremus2 - 5/9/08 3:14 PM In reply to: Next episode - Road Test - Building a Vista PC by acedtect CNET staff

Hi Tom, Rafe, Everyone,

My main box is five years old and I'm looking to build a new system. The programs I use most are Photoshop CS2 and Vegas Movie Studio 60. No gaming and I do not watch any high def videos. I do use Firefox with a gazillion tabs open.

I want lots of USB ports and Firewire. Card reader, Dvd/CD burner, a DVD player and 4 500g HDs.

What motherboard, CPU and video card should I get? Suggestions on a good burner and do you have any HD preferences? I want this box to be Vista bulletproof, but should I stick with XP or take the Vista plunge and get it over with. Will Photoshop run acceptably on Vista?

I've been listening for about a year now and the Cnet podcast MP3s I listen to (this one, BOL and Gadgettes) makes my little bit of postal hell much easier to deal with.

Harold
