Sony KDL - 40XBR4 vs Panasonic TH - 40PZ85U

by kenmanleo - 4/11/08 11:34 AM In reply to: Sony KDL - 40XBR4 vs Panasonic TH - 40PZ85U by kenmanleo

Thank you everyone for your opinions. I have read the reviews on this site and there are none for the new Panasonics but looking at the stats on the new ones It appears with the new contrast ratio's that color won't be any issue. I decided to go with the Panasonic Th-50PZ85U bang for your buck its still cost less the the the 40 Sony and I get an additional 10 inches I'll post an update and a review on the set once I get it and its up and running.

Thanks again!

Can't rule out a good Samsung LCD, either.

Imo, you can very easily have the same quality in a Samsung that you can find in a Sony XBR. I mean, looking at the LN46A650 side-by-side with a KDL-46XBR4, there's little to no difference in picture quality. In fact, the Samsung actually looks a touch better, imo. I'd look at Sammy and see if you think that would be more worth it for the biggest bang for the buck.

To original poster: I actually had the same decision as you. I bought the bravia first, then after about 7 days of being unsatisfied with its poor viewing angle, I bought the 85u. I am so very glad that I did. I am not an aficionado with regards to 'red push' or whatever, but rather I am an average consumer. And to whoever said that the contrast ratio for the xbr was the same as the 85u, let me assure you it is not. This particular lcd is about as good as it gets for lcd, but not even 75% as good as plasma. at least in my experience of having both sets.

Glad you chose the Panny

I have the 40XBR4 and have to say the picture is outstanding but to me it has a huge flaw and that is you can hear the fans in the back of the unit which if it is quiet at night or whenever you will hear the whirring sound. It is a stated flaw by Sony because under trouble shooting in the owners manual it states you will hear a whirring sound from the fans. They have not only already replaced the fans which still did not correct but they also replaced the television and this one has the same noise. they told me to call the repair service again. I had a Sony Trinitron for 19 years and not one problem now I purchase a $2500 XBR4 from them and it has been replaced already with no resolve. No more Sony's for me.

I was a huge fan of the XBR4. But not anymore.
Plasma is just better. The panasonic is a great Tv but you need to get a Kuro!!
