When Microsoft launched Windows Live Mail they intended it to be a replacement for both Outlook Express (Windows XP) and and Windows Mail (Windows Vista). This transition has now reached the next level, with Microsoft disabling the legacy DAV protocol on June 30, 2008. This means that from June 30, 2008 onward you will no longer be able to access your Hotmail account(s) using Outlook Express. (Vista's Windows Mail is natively incapable of supporting Hotmail accounts.)
Windows XP 32-bit Users:
Microsoft recommends downloading Windows Live Mail, the free e-mail client designed as the successor to Outlook Express. All e-mail and contacts can be imported automatically, and both Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail can be used simultaneously if you wish.
Windows 95/98/2000/ME/XP x64 Users:
Unfortunately Windows Live Mail is not supported by any operating system except for Windows XP x86 and Windows Vista. Thus, after June 30, 2008 you will be forced to access your Hotmail e-mail accounts through the webmail interface at http://mail.live.com unless a third-party steps in with an alternative e-mail client that supports the new DeltaSynch protocol.

Outlook Express, but dont use Hotmail. Will I still have to upgrade to Windows Live Mail? Also, how do I know tell which version of Windows XP I have? i.e. 32bit etc
Many thanks
Carol
This only affects those accessing their Hotmail accounts through Outlook Express, so you don't need to switch to Windows Live Mail.
As to determining your Windows version (x86 vs x64), go Start->Run and type sysdm.cpl into the run box. On the next window select the General tab and see if "x64 Edition" is included in the version name. If so you have XP 64-bit; otherwise you have XP 32-bit.
Hope this helps,
John
Is XP SP2 Media Center Edition 64 or 32? IE would MDC have X64 in the name as well?
Windows XP introduced Windows XP Professional x64 as an afterthought, and based it upon the code for Windows Server 2003. Thus, XP x64 comes in the Professional edition only, comparatively few have the 64-bit edition installed, and driver support is minimal. That all changes with Vista, but XP MCE is 32-bit only.

32 Bit
ah well, still a good machine me thinks, lol. many thanks for that John, much appreciated.
