and a projector is a projector. Doesn't really matter what you watch on it.

If I watch movies on my Tv, does that make it a projector lol?

Come on Bill

Cart before the horse. The kind of projector being talked

by NM_Bill - 4/30/08 8:15 AM In reply to: A Tv is a Tv... by stuntman_mike

about is specifically used as a TV, not to cast light upon which to make hand shadow animals, nor a motion picture projector. No one said all TVs are projectors.

I don't know where we are going with this argument...

I said that I wished that they made a TV in in a wider version than 16:9. Givenname said that they do. It's called a projector. I said that a projector is not a TV, which it is not, but that is beside the point. The point is that I said that I wish they made TVs, repeat, TVs, in wider aspect ratios. I am aware that projectors exist :)

we get the point

all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

mike wants a square!

jk

Wider TVs

by Dan Filice - 4/30/08 8:55 PM In reply to: I don't know where we are going with this argument... by stuntman_mike

As I mentioned in my previous post, the 16:9 TV apsect ratio was built to accomodate HD video, not theatrical movie formats. HD video is a known aspect ratio, whereas theatrical films are shot in a variety of formats. Somewhere, there needed to be a fixed aspect ratio on which to format TV screens. I'm sure TVs could easily have been made to fit 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 ratios, but then just think of all the people who would complain about black bars on the sides when watching 16:9 HD video or HDNET or PBS HD or all the other product that is formatted specifically for 16:9 TVs. Having a wider TV won't solve the dilemma of having black bars. It would simply create black bars in other areas when watching HD video content.

I am also aware that having a TV...

with an aspect ration of 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 would still make black bars Dan. But I never complained about black bars in the first place and I would rather have the bigger movies be bigger on my screen and have TV shrunk slightly than the other way around as it is now.

Just my personal preference.

Post 25 of 27

you know, I think a lot of people would like that...

That's what anamorphic CIH pj setups do. Except, you pay like +10k for that ability. That would be nice to get a sweet tv for something much affordable.

I bet quite a few would get it. Very interesting.

Black Bars top and bottom

by Kensheehan - 5/3/08 10:07 AM In reply to: Black Bars on top and bottom of 16X9 TV by boxfresh151

I didn't read all of the replys you received on the subject. If this is a repeat, then I appoligize.

The newer screen format 16 x 9 is much better than the old 4 x 3, you do see more of the image. How ever the format is not the exact same as the movies. Movies are film, depending on the film format will determin the viewing. I think this will be an on going problem for you. The reason I say that, TCM has about a 15 minuet program that explains the reason for the Letterbox format. If you get a chance watch it.

black bars are cool....

by sefuly - 5/9/08 4:27 PM In reply to: Black Bars on top and bottom of 16X9 TV by boxfresh151

I personally like the black bars like true movie enthusiast. If you didn't know these movies preserve the film exactly the way it was shot . If you don't like it buy fullsreen dvd's or use the zoom feature on your tv. But just to let you know your compromising the picture. If you watch fullscreen your watching a cropped picture(4:3)and if you zoom you lose resolution so it defeats the purpose of having a hdtv. I think your just uniformed or maybe you should just stick to a tube tv...lol...I think a tube with a built in hd tuner would solve your black bars issue. well, gotta go so happy hd viewing and long live widesreen formats...lol...
