Ultra compact with a good zoom

by uthaley - 4/28/08 4:46 PM

I am buying a new camera and I cant seem to figure out which one i want.

I don't care about Megapix really
I want great images and a good zoom.

I am traveling to Europe this summer, so I need something that will do well in most situations, bright and low lights.

I dont want to spend more than 300 but would love the best bargain.

well

There are physical restraints to getting a long zoom in an ultra-compact. How much zoom and how ultra-compact are you looking for?

the best zoom with the best images

by uthaley - 4/28/08 6:52 PM In reply to: well by kalel33

really i am not too particular, i just want the one with a combination of the best zoom and images. I know that I cant get the same as others that are not ultra compact, but i would like to get a good combination of both.

I have looked at several canons and panasonics but am not particular to any brand. I look at all the reviews and it seems that i cannot come up with the right camera.

Zoom important for my purchase

by maximany - 4/28/08 7:52 PM In reply to: the best zoom with the best images by uthaley

same question here,
I think I got it down to the lumix TZ5 (10x)or new Stylus 1020(6x). Check these out.
Everyone please give your opinions

would go with

by kalel33 - 4/28/08 9:38 PM In reply to: Zoom important for my purchase by maximany

Either one. The main things the Panny has is wider angle to start and longer zoom. The Olympus is skinnier and has image stabilization. Both don't seem to do well indoors(without flash), higher ISOs, and softer pictures due to the high noise reduction. Whats more important to you is going to have to be answered by you.

Nikon P60

by Joliet Eddie - 4/29/08 10:30 AM In reply to: would go with by kalel33

I was looking for the same qualities and went with the new Nikon P60. Optical zoom 5x in a very small, well-built package. The zoom is sweet and the camera's body feels solid and more like metal than some of its rivals which, when I handled them in the stores, felt plastic and cheap to me.

Comparing image quality on Image Resources website with other makes the Nikon holds its own or exceeds. It has a viewfinder (electronic) so that you are not stuck with trying to use the LCD for composing shots in bright sunlight. I don't see how cameras without a separate viewfinder can be at all easy to use outside.

It takes AA batteries, which could be a lifesaver on a trip to keep on shooting.

I've seen some mediocre reviews of the P60 and do not agree at all. I have had it a little over 3 weeks and think that for $199 this is one nice camera.

A couple of good choices...

by cole169 - 5/3/08 8:48 AM In reply to: Ultra compact with a good zoom by uthaley

Are the Panasonic Lumix TZ-5 and the Casio Exilim EX-V8. I own both, the Panny is big, but has 10x zoom and EXCELLENT antishake software, incredible pictures for about $300. The Casio is tiny, less than 1/2 size of Panny, 7x zoom, antishake is OK, pictures are great, but not as good as Panny. Cost of Casio is < $200, and it has another wonderful feature for a traveler---no extending lens to pick up grit and then fail, all the lens components are internal. I would suggest that you put your hands on both and then make a decision, both will give great pics, but there are major differences in size and function. Oh yeah, the Casio uses a docking base to charge the batt, a major pain, doubles the size of the stuff you must carry, but there are aftermarket chargers...

best high zoom compact digicam

by maximany - 5/3/08 2:37 PM In reply to: fugi s1000 by peterlewis1956

that fuji looks great, but I am looking for a good quality compact that I can put in the pocket of my coat, or whatever I am wearing, has great pictures and as much zoom as possible for general use, need something more compact than those larger cams with high zoom capabilities.
I would have no problem buying a Canon if they offered such a camera, but since they don't I am leaning towards the Olympus 1020 unless something better comes along within the next month or so before I really need it.

Olympus Stylus 1020 vs Panny TZ5

by maximany - 5/3/08 5:43 PM In reply to: Which Ultra Compact With a Zoom Is Best? by JCipo

thanks, I have done fairly extensive research on good compact digicams the only thing holding me back from the Olympus stylus 1020 is that I heard there is an issue that you can only shoot 10sec film clips. I will not use this feature often but for $350 I expect it to work perfectly. the panny is about $50 less but is also bigger and heavier

1020 or 1010

by edwbowden - 5/18/08 12:56 PM In reply to: Olympus Stylus 1020 vs Panny TZ5 by maximany

The Olympus 1010 has the same features as the 1020 (10 MP, 7X optical, small slim body) except the 1020 has the better display for $50 more.

It is in most stores now with many running sales.

good zoom of 10x; easy to use; nice lents. Not very compact but any way pockatable. In my opinion the best compromise.

Lumix TZ5...

by deltaman - 5/5/08 9:10 PM In reply to: Ultra compact with a good zoom by uthaley

... Is a great compact digi-cam, imo - & DOES have image stabilization feature as well! Panasonic offered IS feature before 'most anybody else, & still leads the pack with most-effective (sensor-shift) IS.

I suggest you also check other reputable review sites (steves-digicams, dpreview, dcresource) for their 'take' on the models you're considering...
