laptop recomendations

by TSTEPP11 - 5/2/08 4:45 AM

i am in the market for a laptop computor for a high school grad. it will be used mainly for music, video's, email, internet. she doesn't do any gaming. i'm hoping to stay in the 600 to 700 range. i know you get what you pay for, but if i get a cheap laptop, what upgrade would be best? could i upgrade the memory to help with performance? what should i stay away from? what would be the main thing to look for? i thought this would be easy, but good lord, there's a million of them out there. there's a million configuration's. i would like to stick with xp because thats what she has on here desk top. any input would be appreciated.

Why not a little better?

Look at the lowest cost MacBook. It's very nice.

Our laptop forum has such questions daily it seems. See what people suggest at http://forums.cnet.com/5204-7587_102-0.html?forumID=69&tag=forum.fd

Also, you may be in Spain, France or Aus so you may have to be more specific about locale since "the 600 to 700 range" is not specifying what currency.

At the office, home and labs.

We have Dell, HP, Compaqs, Acers, Toshibas and a few others. None have given us any grief at all. But we don't call for software support and the hard seems to be about the same across all makers.

There was that shoddy Pentium 4 design that lead many to slam a maker (changes with which they bought) but today I can't say to avoid the usual names.

Personally

Personally, I would avoid HP and Compaq laptops like the plague. I would also echo Bob's comments about looking at the MacBook, but on the PC side I would say either Lenovo or Dell. You'll pay a bit more, but you'll get a much better quality system. Since you can't really replace hardware in a laptop, it's important to get a good one.
