The flip side of being hi-tech in a dorm

by chiragmehta - 5/1/08 8:57 PM

I dont know if this is the most ideal place to ask this but please help me out if you can...

I am really into Cnet and Tech. I love buying tech stuff and hearing about it from Tom, Molly and the gang.
Now, my dorm room is the favourite hangout for all my friends. Its pretty big, comfy, and I have a 50'' plasma, PS3, Xbox and a surround sound music system all which I am very proud of. I wanted to make a cool "lounge" sort of place and I think I did a pretty good job.

However, whatever snacks, food or beverages I buy get used up pretty fast. When my friends leave, it is up to me to pick up their trash, clean up the crumbs, and discard the opened and unfinished snacks and beverages. Many a time I have had to throw away a 1.99 drink with just a few sips taken or a snickers bar with only one bite taken, and I hate wasting food, especially when its my money. Of course its up to me to rent the movies and games that we enjoy.
I can't ask them for 5 bucks for their food or sharing my 30$ blockbuster subscription between 5-7 people without sounding like a *********, but this is getting pretty expensive. I cant stop buying the food as I need it for myself. What do I do?

instead of asking for money

Why don't you ask your friends to bring something and coordinate it so you don't have everyone bringing chips with nothing to drink. And maybe every once in a while ask somebody to bring in a movie. That's how I did it in college (a long time ago) and I had absolutely no money...and no 50" plasma, PS3, Xbox, etc. We had VCRs (Beta and VHS), Atari(I actually didn't, though), and Jolt (cola) to mix with vodka.

While you're at it, ask your friends to help clean up.

Sorry, I'm starting to sound like your mother.

Don't Restock

If you don't keep refilling the fridge and pantry then I think the message will get through pretty quick...

Say something now

Don't wait and let all this build up. You'll end up flipping out and throwing one of them out a window, or worse, through your glorious 50 incher!

Call them out for being punks, and sometimes it can be hard to do, but just ask one or two of them to help you clean up when everyone is leaving.

If you don't speak-up, nothing will change. Case in point, right after college I bought a really nice house and put a lot of money into fixing the few things that were wrong with it. But my friends were in college mode still, with their dirty furniture and scratching up my brand new hardwood floors. Breaking my lawn mower, my weed-wacker. And one guy bought a dog that ruined carpet in one of my rooms.

I had to ask them to move out. And guess what, we are still friends to this day. Talking to someone about something is always harder to do in your head, than it really is. So stand-up for yourself and your personal space, if your friends don't respect that, then they aren't your friends.

Good luck.

Good advice already.

You got good advice from others.

There is a Plan B. Take 18 credits. You won't have time to party and your friends will believe you when you say that you need to study. The problem will take care of itself.
