Insure your stuff people! Esp. laptops!

by merrybrown - 4/28/08 3:44 PM

We just had it happen again. Person leaves laptop in car, goes to [bar, shopping, visit friend, Starbucks]. Comes back, car broken into laptop gone. Car insurance will not cover this. Your homeowners/renters policy might not either. You need to clarify that with your agent. It's not expensive to insure, but it's a total pain if you don't have insurance.

Common sense

I just can't believe people don't just lock the laptops in the boot (trunk for you Americans), or take them with them when they leave the car. Make sure there is nothing in sight inside the car that anyone would want to steal. Euch, seems like common sense to me. (Also having it insured as a precautionary measure is good too, as well as back-ups of your data, the most important thing you could lose)

oh yeah, data is separate!

People don't realize all the cost involved with recreating data (although you can just imagine, if you have ever had a hard drive crash), so you need insurance for that as well. Tricky, sticky situation!
Makes me want to buy an HP 2133 Mini Note just so I can drop it into my purse/bag/briefcase.

I've been lucky and never had a HDD crash, but the thought of losing a useable laptop for Uni and it's my primary machine, euch, I'd hate that, I mean, if it's lost and there's no backup, there's no way I can get all my photos back, or my purchased digital music. I just like to play it safe and backup to an external HDD. But I agree with you; this is where an ultraportable low(ish) cost laptop comes in to its own.

"external HDD" is not a backup plan.

I need no more proof than our Storage forum and all the posts about how to recover files from external HDDs. I have more than 4 backup systems but don't count on the HDD to survive so that gives me 3 more chances.

It doesn't bother me that much.

I'm not really all that fussed, over the last 12 years, I've never had a HDD fail on me yet, and just having my media and Uni work backed up on another HDD in another room is enough for me. There's nothing there that is "critical", I could live with losing just about all of it, except maybe my Uni work. I can get most my photos back from Picasa/Flickr, I have 98% of my music on CD, and my movies I have on DVD too. I also have my Uni work kept on our Uni system as well as my local machine. Which is properly backed up. 4 backup systems is a little excessive for me.

You'd be amazed

at how foolhardy many people are with their laptops. I work in a medium sized public library. At any given time during the day you will find anywhere from 2-6 laptops sitting at different tables all alone.

Some of them have dashed off to the bathroom. But most have left the building! They've gone to make phone calls, go have lunch, or even take a nap elsewhere! The guy who took the nap had his stolen. Did he learn his lesson? Nope, a few weeks later he left his laptop and asked some stranger to watch it while he was gone. A man walked up and started to unplug it and take it. The owner of the laptop was fortunate that the guy 'tasked' to watch it actually spoke up.

But I'm not all that surprised since people leave their children (somewhat more valuable than a laptop, wouldn't you say??) here all the time and then get irate when we call the police because their under 8 year old child was left alone in the building while they went shopping!

Okay, that surprises me. Think about it, would someone leave $2000 sitting on a table then walk away? That's what you're doing with your laptop. That's ridiculous though.
