New KRZR - Standard Ringtone Q

by soozdh - 4/30/08 11:56 AM

I recently upgraded my Motorola V710 phone to the KRZR K1m with Verizon Wireless. I have a question regarding the ringtones that came free with the phone. I have set up all of my contacts and assigned a ringtone to each of them; however, when one of my contacts calls me the ringtone defaults to the standard ring instead of the custom ring I have assigned to that person. At this point and time I am not interested in downloading a bunch of new ringtones but I would like the tones that came on the phone to work like they are supposed to. When I go into the menu and select "My Ringtones" I have about 20 different ringtones to choose from - BUT, beside of each selection there is a small red "lock" symbol on top of the green icon. Does this mean these ringtones are locked and can't be used? Why would Verizon lock the standard ringtones that are included with the phone?

If anyone can assist me with this (really stupid) question I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Check the guide, then check with Verizon...

I'll answer the second question first. It's because they want you to use their Get It Now ringtone service instead of the included ringtones.

As for the factory ringtones being locked, that usually means the tone can't be sent as an audio file. However, it could also mean the tone can't be used without paying an extra charge. First, check your phone's user manual/user guide to see what the icon means. If there's no explanation in the manual, then take your phone into a Verizon retail store and ask one of the customer service reps how how to unlock the ringtone. They should be able to walk you through it. If that doesn't work, then use Get It Now or consider swapping to a different handset (such as the LG Chocolate or the Samsung Juke).

Software update to resolve problem with vibrate

Don't know if you resolved this yet or not, but if you turn off the vibrate function for incoming calls (Settings & Tools - Sounds Settings - Call Sounds), you will be able to use personalized ringtones. This is only a temporary fix until you can take your phone into a Verizon store and have them upgrade the software. After the upgrade, you will be able to reactive the vibrate function and still have personalized ringtones.
