Computer restarts when transferring large amounts of data

I have been living with this problem ever since I built my computer and have finally decided to tackle it.
Whenever I transfer a large amount of data (>1GB), my computer restarts itself in the middle of the process. There isn't a definite amount - sometimes it will complete 2-3GB before it happens, sometimes it will happen after 250MB. I also noticed that it sometimes occur when I am continuously sending data, such as when I watch a video file on an external drive.
Each time it happens, I get a message upon Windows loading that says that the system recovered from a serious error. I look at the logs, but I can't make any sense of it.
This happens even when I am using a self-powered USB source, so I don't think it's a power supply issue. I have several ports, but changing the port doesn't make a difference. Any ideas would be really appreciated. Thanks

you may be able to find out more by disabling the "Automatically restart on system failure" option. This will allow any blue screen, (BSOD or Blue Screen of Death), to display which will have more information,. like the STOP error code and/or the application that caused the error.
To disable the "Automatically restart" right click the My Computer icon, select Properties and then the advanced tab. Then click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery, and in the new dialog remove the tick for "Automatically restart", then OK/Apply/OK out.
The next time your system halts, it should display that BSOD which may help.

Thanks Mark, but I already have that option un-checked. I guess this is another reason why I am so perplexed that the computer restarts instead of giving a BSOD.
In that case, try the Event Viewer.

See if there is anything in the Event Viewer, (Start > Run, type in eventvwr.msc, click OK).

I checked the event viewer right after a crash that happened about 10 minutes ago. I was downloading something to my external HD at about 500 kB/s. Nothing was recorded in the event viewer right before the crash. Everything I see is from either several hours earlier or seconds after (during the system's boot-up time). I appreciate the help, but do you have any other ideas?
