Re: Answer for Santhsh

Santhsh, This sounds like a overheating CPU. I would first shut down your computer, open the case and using compressed air in a can, blow out the computer, paying close attention to the CPU cooling fan and heat sink. After you clean it, with the cover off, reconnect everything and power the computer back up. Check to make sure the Cooling fan is working.

Reboot problem - CPU overheat?

by aldim - 4/25/08 7:40 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The first thing that I think of is check your CPU cooling fan and heatsink. Make sure the fan on top of the CPU is spinning and the CPU heatsink isn't clogged with dust. That can cause the symptom you describe.

My PC keeps rebooting every 10-20 minutes

by majpsgill - 4/25/08 7:41 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Most likely the cooling fan on your processor is not working or the heat sink sitting on the Processor is not installed with a proper conducting paste, because of which the proper heat transfer from the processor is not taking place and it tends to heat up over a period of time and tend to shut down automatically because of the hardware monitoring part of the BIOS enabled to protect your Processor.

Rebooting every 10-20 mins.

by bunnyman - 4/25/08 7:57 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Like most answers here, I would suspect 1st the CPU overheating. If you've blown out the cooling fan & heatsink on the CPU, I would replace it with a new one. They're pretty inexpensive and may very well cure your problem. Be careful applying the thermal grease to the CPU. Disharge your static by touching the grounded metal case of your PC before you unplug it. Carefully remove the heatsink and clean ALL the Old Thermal grease or compound off before applying the new. Just enough to cover the face of the chip's heat plate with a thin coat. 91% isopropyl alcohol works very good for cleaning this area.
If this does not cure the problem my nect suspect is surely your power supply. I Highly Recommend not cutting corners on this critical part. Buy a GOOD one. Antec is of the the few that are reliable and very well made. Hope this helps.

Hello Santhsh,

There are a few possibilites that may cause this issue...

1. Your computer is over heating due to lack of ventilation in the case.
You need to look closely at the 'air flow' through the case. Having just the CPU Fan is generally not enough.
To effectively keep the temperatures down, you need to have at least three fans in total (the CPU + 2).
If you haven't already, buy a couple of 80mm case fans (if they will fit, or smaller), and place one that 'exhausts' air out of the rear of the case, and the other one that 'sucks in air' mounted in the front of the case.
By doing this the 'heated' air that is suck up from the CPU can be 'cooled', circulated and removed from the case.

2. The heating can also be caused due to the fact that you only have the minimum amount of RAM installed. If you were to double this, you not only would find the computer responding faster, it will run cooler, as the RAM/CPU do not have to work so hard processing the data.

3. Perhaps one of the most over-looked 'problems' with computers...the Power Supply Unit (PSU).
Many manufactured computer systems are built to a price; hence, the two items that are severely under-rated are the RAM and PSU.
To test you system's PSU requirements, try going to
http://support.asus.com/PowerSupplyCalculator/PSCalculator.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
and see really what 'size' PSU you really need.

Try these ideas and see what the result is.

Kind Regards,

Feels Thermal

by gaddy - 4/25/08 8:06 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Assuming you have not found a particular program that triggers the reboot and the timing is apporimately consistant (10-20 minutes) and the CPU is more that a couple of years old it is possible that a buildup of dust on the fans, and blades of the CPU heat sink may prevent the normal dissipation of the processor heat. There is an absolute precise temperature that will kick off the processor to protect it. It will cool off immediately below that temp and can start again.
You oviously are comforatble with opening the case. Try getting a can of compressed air and blow out the fans and heat sink fins. While there, blow out the drives and all holes that can collect dust, USB ports, network connections CD drive etc.
This may do the trick

AMD overheating in possible cause

by sasha0808 - 4/25/08 8:20 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The problem is likely processor overheating. Your AMD is several years old. If you fan is as old, it may had weakened, and needs replacement of at least some cleaning. AMD has a tendency of worthening the heat contact with the cooler due to drying out of the heat sink compaund, usually after 3-5 years of use. Then, the temperature of the processor goes up, causing processor errors. Buy a good compound (~$10 at Best Buy, better silver-based) and replace it by tacking off the fan and sink, gently cleaning the contact, putting the new compound, and assembling the sink/fan back.
A better way is to replace motherboard and processor/sink/fan; the new AMD are way faster, and not expensive if you limit yourself to not the last model. A lot is offered on e-bay.
Good luck,
Al

Try replacing the power supply

by im2late - 4/25/08 8:23 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Perhaps you can buy it retail at an office supply store like Staples or Office depot so that you can return it if it doesn't do the trick.
I lost a motherboard to a bad power supply because I continued to try to use the system in spite of the frequent shut downs. I guess there was either a surge of power or insufficient power at one point and pffffftttt - bye bye PC! I needed to have my system rebuilt.
So I'd suggest you discontinue using your system until you've tried some of the suggestions on this message board.
Good luck to you.

answer for Santhsh

by dgb1950 - 4/25/08 8:25 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Check your cpu fan and be sure that it is functioning, and the fins are not plugged up or filled with dust, dirt, hair and any other particles to obstruct air flow.
This is the first thing I'd look at. I've seen this a number of times. Without the adequate vetilation, the cpu overheats, and will cause the cpu to slow to a crawl, and at other times, I've seen it cause reboots.

Do, hope that is of some aid.

Rebooting!!

by 13belles - 4/25/08 8:38 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't know if this is your problem or not but I will tell you what happened with my computer! We recently got it back from the shop! When I took it in it was shutting down and rebooting itself. It started doing it once in a while and in the end was doing it even with noone sitting at the computer! It wouldn't even let the antivirus do a scan of the computer without shuting down and rebooting before it could finish! They found out after having it for a week that the motherboard had to be replaced. It has been working fine ever since!

PC keep rebooting

by tehat - 4/25/08 8:44 PM In reply to: Help! My PC keeps rebooting every 10 to 20 minutes! by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It happened to my friend's computer a couple time. After carefully troubleshoot the possible cause ,I found the real culprit it is a weak power supply. When running hot after a few minutes , the output voltage of the Ps will reduce that caused the CPU to reboot.Trust me if you replace the PS the problem will go away.Good Luck!!

Well I'm from the old school and to tell you the truth I can only think of one thing that would be doing this and that would be a virus , of course I've been known to be wrong on occasion but ohhh it sure sounds like a virus to me.
