How will running HDMI through a HTIB affect my Directv?
by pinellasproofer - 4/22/08 8:21 AMI am thinking about buying one of the Onkyo HTIBs that CNET is always raving about, but the upscaling specs have me a bit confused. My Sony LCD can handle 1080p, but a lot of receivers upscale to 1080i. My Directv only goes up to 1080i, but will I need to buy a 1080p receiver if they start broadcasting in 1080p? Would the 1080i receiver mess up a 1080i signal trying to upscale it. I assume that, as long as a receiver has any HDMI connections, whatever signal beyond the upscaling capability would not be affected, but I have been wrong before. Also, would the receiver upscale Directv channels that are not 1080i, and if so, would this fool my tv into stretching the upscaled channels?
Not ever having a receiver, I assume my Directv HDMI cable goes into the receiver and then I have to buy another cable to go from the receiver to the tv.

That will give you the best picture quality.

Receivers (HTIB receiver) do not have many menu options to alter video, so bypassing it by feeding the video directly from your Direct TV box to your TV is fine.
As long as you either run an digital optical audio cable from your TV Out or the Direct TV out to your HTIB receiver, you will have all the audio control based in the receiver.
