I need new speakers, want to stay in the $250-$500 range (per speaker/$500-$1000 a pair, and am completely overwhelmed by the
accompanying literature/spin. I am thoroughly a neophyte. Would anyone care to rank, rate, or otherwise comment on, the below possibilities. I want the speakers for connection to a new receiver (Onkyo 705)and will need a center channel speaker that is compatible with whatever main speaker selection I make. I truly appreciate your time and consideration.

speakers. Anyone who sells them always champions the brand they sell. I note your list has many I would put on any list I would do. A Feb 2008 free online mag had a fine article specifically on a bfine group of brands often listed as superior picks for performance at value price point. Check out the speaker article in:
http://magazine.playbackmag.net/200802/?folio=1
A fine while concise list of brands for bookshelf sets under a thousand dollars. No list can include all the promising possibilities. Take these ones seriously as to then see if you can find access in your area to go give several a serious listening to. Large cities have a real edge over light populations. I would even plan to travel to the nearest large city to seek some out to audition.
Seriously, the link is to good info. Take a look & post back for perhaps some more specifics.
of $1000 max limit. I would audition as many $2000 speakers as i could, pick my favorite, and buy it used for half price, if possible. thats me.
even as new, you can also look at psb image, monitor audio rs, paradigm, av123, ascend, swan, many others. endless.
i would like to hear some dynaudio towers that are selling for 1k as used. that would be my first audition, if i were in your shoes.
Simple, but powerful
Hi, I noted that you have a long list of speaker brands and I feel that you narrow down to about 5 which are within your budget. A point to remember is that no 2 different speaker brands (same technical specs) produce the same sound effect.
Choosing of speaker sound is very personal and to one's preference. It's pointless in buying a reputable brand when one person likes the sound but you don't.
You should not go just for the branding but rather let your own ears listening decides. You can easily get a set that produces the sound quality that is to your liking.
The other aspect is that the speakers alone cannot produce the sound that you want without proper adjustments to the amplifier or AV receiver that you have.
Many buyers who bought speakers always have this perception that the sound of the speakers they bought sounded different as compared with in the audio showroom. This is partly due to the accoustic provided in the showroom.
You will notice that practically all audio showrooms have carpeted or timber flooring, acoustic walls and thick curtains. WHY? The simple fact is that these finishes are sound absorbent as compared to a hard flooring and bare walls where the sound from the speakers reverberate.
My suggestion is to narrow down to 3 or 5 the brands and decide from there. Ask the sellers in the showrooms to bring the speakers out of the enclosed room/s in enabling you to have a better feel of the sound effect.
