Cost is always a factor

More like by JCPayneUsing open source and non restrictive license saves on development, allows updates and modifications, and allows the company to release both a professional and community product- of which the latter brings in a few more clients.
Stability and testing: Limiting the code base to only a few or charging a large amount for it does not allow your product to be improved.
