Highest Quality Audio

by ldanix1 - 3/19/08 9:15 AM

Hey Everyone!
I have a 200+ album collection that has all been ripped using FLAC. I am looking for a player that supports any lossless format (FLAC, WMA or Apple are fine).
I also want a player with superior sound quality output. From what I have heard, the highest sound quality players (Creative Zen) do not support any lossless codecs.
Would I achieve better overall quality by getting a player with lossless support and lower quality output or high quality output with only lossy support?
Is there a player that combines both lossless support with superior quality output?

Thanks!

I think maybe a Cowon player might suit you but I'm not terribly familiar with them. I hear they support a lot of formats and have good sound quality. Though with less HDD based players coming out your choice may become limited becuase of space.

Personally I'm good with 192-256 bit rate with good earbuds but that's probably because of going to to many Punk shows with no ear plugs.

I would go with a Cowon player: http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-6490_7-0.html?filter=1000036_9115721_

My favorite is the D2.

The Zunes (with a firmware update, IIRC) and the Sony's NWZ-A and NWZ-S series support WMA Lossless. The Sony also accept non-DRM AAC-LC, that is lossy but still way better quality than MP3.

I've got a NWZ-A818 myself and I can tell you the sound quality is astounding. Easily the best sound quality I've found, to date, on a portable player. They come with nice bundled earbuds, also, that I use any time I take the player to the gym, as I don't like the idea of carrying my Shures everywhere XD

Sony just launched their new NWZ-A720 and NWZ-A820 series that, if they kept the same headphones and with their new 16gb capacity, are quite worthy taking a look at.

rockbox

check out rockbox. it is free open source firmware that can be installed on a number of players (including ipod), offers extended format support (including flac) and a lot of extra features. I have it on an old iriver ihp-120 - this player excels in audio quality, but had a quirky interface and no flac support. Rockbox runs rock solid and has a very usable and customizable interface on an already great sounding player. It is dual boot, so you can still run the original firmware if needed (i never needed).
