Recommendations for intense graphic usage

by dia1943 - 3/24/08 12:41 AM In reply to: New PC recommendations needed for graphic-intensive programs by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a Dell Inspiron 531 with AMD 2 x 2.8Mhz Dual Core Processors and 2Gb of fast ram.

It struggles with Pinnacle Studio 11 Plus. It can only cope with 20mins of Mpeg2 Standard Def files and that's with all Windows performance tweaked to highest performance and with EndItAll cancelling out all irellevent starup ptograms. It doesn't cope with HVCHD files.

To get 1 hour of standard def video, I have to render video, transitions and sound into 20min portions and and join three sections together to make an hours video. This double rendering reduces the overall video quality. Pinnacle have not been able to resolve my problems.

My answer is to go for at lease 4Gb ram

Dear Joan

by chappejw - 3/24/08 1:51 AM In reply to: New PC recommendations needed for graphic-intensive programs by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi Joan,

You might as well just go to the store put on a blindfold and just buy the first thing you bump into. Nobody here in this forum can give you any good advice. People will just confuse you and themselves with misrepresented information about memory addressing, 32 bit vs 64 bit computing, the significance or insignificance of multiple cores, and subjective recommendations for various circumstantial aspects of using a computer. What's funny, is that you probably know more about it all than most of the people posting in here. What's really shocking though is that nearly every post I have come across in here is either complete ********, or the person swearing by a product or concept does not provide any concrete proof of their claims. People say crap like "Based on percentage"...(percentage of what?) "They say it's the best"...(who's they?)..."Making the switch to XP X-64 is the best bet for raw performance and capacity beyond any other combination." (Raw performance how? capacity of what? combination of what?) If you imagine these people went to court and a judge had to listen to what they have to say. They would be dismissed as unprofessional, irrelevant idiots who could not explain how to blow up a balloon.

My best advice at this point would be to use Google to get the facts. Compare your options, and make an informed decision yourself.

If any admin reads this. There should be some kind of moderation in these forums. There is alot of false information given here, and I mean alot. It's not useful to readers, and actually it can be quite misleading to people who like to use sites like CNET as a way of getting good information, reviews, and advice before they make purchases in the marketplace such as Joan.

No problem with XP!

by AratCologne - 3/24/08 5:38 AM In reply to: New PC recommendations needed for graphic-intensive programs by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Dear Joan,
greeings at first.
On my previous PC i was running apps. like the Adobe
family (CS3) and render intense progams like MAYA 8.5
Methal Ray and Blender 2.3.
It was propelled by a Intel DualCore 2,6 GHz and
a XFX 8800 GTX Grafik Card and used 2 Gigīs
Corsair RAM.

My OS. was Windows XP pro (32bit US version) installed on a
Western Digital 150 GB Raptor HD.

There was no performance or stability issue at all
unless you dont run more than two apps. at the same time.

Sincerely

Wolfgang "Arat" Weber

Actually... Microsoft will start to force people to use Vista by dropping support for XP soon. This means that if you have to rely on Microsoft to keep YOUR operating system up to date and secure they won't be. Microsoft will soon stop supporting Xp in order to get people to move to Vista. However, there are huge software compatibility problems between Xp and Vista. Software that works on Xp may not work on Vista which means basically you may be better off to use Linux which can also run Windows software from 98, NT/2000/XP as well. This is noted here by a law firm which uses mission critical software designed for Xp.

The sooner you start using Mac or Linux, the sooner your suffering will end.

Two statements in this post merit a remark.

1. Windows XP will be sold in retail up to June 30, 2008, to system builders up to January 31, 2009, and will be supported for 5 more years, so well into 2013.
2. Not ALL Windows software runs on Linux using Wine, and moreover, it's unsupported not after 2013 but right now.

Re: Linux rules

by chappejw - 3/24/08 3:20 PM In reply to: Re: Linux by Kees Bakker Moderator

The point is that Windows Xp will not be sold After Jan, 2009 which is less than a year away... If you are a company creating software or using software that can only run on Windows Xp and you plan on setting up 100 more Xp systems to be used in your company... You could be up ********* without a paddle... If you checked the link I left in the last post, you would see that Linux is a viable solution for that law firm. Wine is also supported now for more than 9 years... I personally contribute to software projects like Wine because they are excellent solutions to day to day computing use.

By the way if you used Google today or some models of Linksys routers or cell phones, you have already used Linux. An operating system should not be a hinderance to the user experience, but it should allow the user to use and manage programs as easily, and effortlessly as possible.

XP-compatibility

by AratCologne - 3/25/08 6:51 AM In reply to: Re: No problem with XP! by chappejw

For my Adobe products there was no problem at all
changing to Vista.

I am using Vista Ultimate 64 on my actual mashine and
my software runs quite fine...with some minor events,
but thatīs Windows!

(I belive in the allmightiness of the Core.dll and
the eternal truth of the Kernell 32/64 and i have
fear changing to Linux or Mac)

XP may be better than Vista, but...

by shoopdog - 4/13/08 8:36 PM In reply to: Re: No problem with XP! by chappejw

Here, here. Totally agree with chappejw. Ditching Windows is the first move you need to make. The fact that no one in the art/media/design/photo idustries use Windows unless they are forced to (at gunpoint), should tell you all you need to know. Even Adobe creative suite files are totally cross compatible these days. Don't be afraid, make the leap.

Stick to the question

by MichaelF - 4/14/08 12:24 AM In reply to: XP may be better than Vista, but... by shoopdog

May I respectfully remind everyone that Joan specifically said that she wished to stay with XP and that she had no interest in purchasing a MAC. It is a shame that so often these days you have to specifically state that you do not want MAC responses to try to prevent these constant MAC/PC wars.

Unfortunately the wishes do not seem to be respected and we waste a lot of peoples time having them anyway. Lets stick to the questions please.

Michael

Michael,
i agree with you that Joan really does not know what she was talking about and that she is best be served purchasing a Mac ...and if she really needs a lame OS, she can also install xp or vista on it too. good point!

Thank you for proving my point. Their are MAC forums where you can go and discuss your importance with like minded people and be dismayed why everyone else isn't as smart as you are, and leave those of us with alternative preferences alone. I do not go onto MAC forums and try to convince you of your mistakes.

by puma - 4/14/08 8:14 AM In reply to: dismayed by MichaelF

she wants to use xp or vista, so why are you misinforming her to NOT to get a Mac? ...Mac runs windows, and its far superior at graphics/video apps. you need to go back to school

Who cares

by waytron - 4/14/08 2:58 AM In reply to: Re: No problem with XP! by chappejw

Who cares if Microsoft drops support for XP. That does not mean anything. There are plenty of offices that are still using Windows 98 and 2000 just fine without support from Microsoft.

Upgrade Your PC

by Mdepko - 3/24/08 5:50 AM In reply to: New PC recommendations needed for graphic-intensive programs by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

In looking at what you have said you will be doing on your new PC, I would say that 2GB of memory and an Intel Dual Core will be sufficient. However, stay away from the Dell Inspiron 530 series of PCs if you are planning on putting Windows XP on it. The Inspiron 530s are designed for Windows Vista and have not been tested for Windows XP. I found this out when I purchased one for my daughter for Christmas. After fudging around with Vista Home Basic for a couple months, my daughter asked me to go back to XP. Not an easy thing to do. I did speak to Dell support, and they are the ones that told me that the 530s were not designed for XP and Dell did not have any links to Drivers to use with XP. They did give me a list of the devices that I needed to go out and find the drivers for. It took me a few hours of Googleing to find the correct drivers for XP. So, make sure that if you are going to load Windows XP, either do not purchase a Dell Inspiron 530, or be prepared to do some searching for your drivers.

Inspiron 530 with XP

by waytron - 4/14/08 2:47 AM In reply to: Upgrade Your PC by Mdepko

I just reinstalled XP Pro on a Dell Inspiron 530 this weekend. I had no problems and found all the XP drivers for it on the Dell website. It works very well.
