Where?

by Christopera - 4/12/08 10:01 AM In reply to: Camera Upgrade by huntnlabs

I found a open box XT on amazon but other than haven't found any refurbished models. I already own a refurbished MacBook and a refurbished iPod nano. I love saving money on basicly the same thing.

Where can you find refurbed cameras at?

Lens purchases

I can't speak to refurbished cameras, but I will say there is a good market for lenses on Craigslist. Used lenses, if well maintained, do not lose their value. For the past 3 years I have traded and upgraded about 6 or 7 (Canon EF & EF-S) lenses. On average, a high quality used Canon lens will trade for about 20% off the Amazon price. There is some variance in price dependent on demand for the lens model, age and condition of the lens. Obviously when you purchase from a store, you can take the lens back, whereas not true for Craigslist purchases. I will generally check out a lens in the store first, to get a sense of what a new model looks and feels like on my camera body. Once you have identified a lens (or any camera accessory) you want, I would recommend tracking Craigslist prices for the lens you are interested in for a couple of months. When you find a bargain near you, and have the cash, check it out. So far, I have never been stiffed on a lens. However, after owning a lens for a month or two, I may find that I am not excited about a specific model. The good news is, assuming I got a good original purchase price, I can usually turn around and sell it for what I paid for it, if not more.
