Is anybody keeping their HD DVD players?

by C_519 - 4/6/08 2:41 PM

Now that the HD DVD format has officially been declared dead I'm wondering if anybody is keeping their HD DVD players reguardless. For me it's a pretty easy choice because I have the Xbox 360 HD DVD player and even if I returned the player for a Best Buy creidt of 129.99 I'd still have to dish out at least another $400 to get the cheapest Blue-Ray player. The 360 HD DVD also displays regular DVD's just as well as any upconvert player.

in fact, there is a very long thread at AVS about which player you bought as a BACKUP, hehe.

People are hording up the clearance prices. Like crazy. I just finally received my promotional 5 free, and watched one of them, Darkman and the PQ is phenomenal. I think maybe the best live action PQ Ive seen yet.

After some brief research, I am considering these titles that are not available on BD (except for Untouchables only, but the PQ is said to be fantastic on HD, and perhaps only above avg on BD):

- Stardust
- Machinist
- Deer Hunter
- Running Scared
- Untouchables

Other possible candidates that I'm not as sure about (for various reasons)

- Casablanca
- Fearless
- Last Starfighter

dunno yet. After buying one or two hi-def discs that are not that much better than upscaled DVDs, I am using AVS PQ tier threads in aiding my purchases. Im pretty excited.

Unless you purchased right before Toshiba pulled the plug, you really have no reason to get rid of it. Enjoy what you have and stock up on cheap HD DVD's to build your library. I'll probably purchase a dual player next instead of an outright BD player.

that's what i was thinking as well

future dual players. sort of how there are dual dvda/sacd players today. rather not purchase a backup player now. if my discs become completely useless when my player dies, so be it.

I couldnt find Machinist, or Running Scared easily at any reasonable price. I ordered Stardust, Last Starfighter, and the Untouchables.

The last is available on BD, but did not easily find it. I really hope the consumer reviews are accurate for both formats, but I am already finding discrepancies. Im making a leap of faith on the last...
