CNET is good, but what keeps it from being Great is that there ALWAYS seems to be something left out, many times the most important info.
When tackling the hands free issue, I have found the best thing is NONE of Brian's options, but instead buy a GPS unit with BT support which he didn't even mention! For years now they have offered to give you either a high quality speakerphone or an option to use car stereo for the audio- so not only does this solve a need for 2 things in one (GPS AND Handsfree), but can hit all those other "middle-ground" issues Brian listed.
It can also add other bonuses, like if you use GPS to discover waypoint info (diner, gas, etc) it also gives you a phone number that you can one touch (or voice command) dial. Many upload contact info from the phone so it scrolls down the larger-than-phone-screen list if voice command can't find it. Some add MP3 so it can play music via FM to my sound system and mute the sound when a call comes in. While it is portable, some can be installed to a docking holder so it is not a cludge of wires- and a duplicate dock can be in my home that allows me to get updates from the web, plan routes, add music or phone numbers, waypoints, etc- these things are BETTER than the built-in systems that cost 4 times as much and cannot be taken with you (and some cannot be updated). Mid range recommendations are TomTom 720 or Garmin 680....both have lower and higher models with more or less features/cost. (not familiar w Magellan but I believe they have more 'voice command' options).
