Hey everyone,
I was thinking about creating a website that would compliment this forum, the wiki, and watchbol.com.
I have met some really awesome people through the forums, then twitter, pownce etc. I would like for us to have a place where we can all share ideas and information that goes beyond just the forum. A place where we can have sort of a BOL profile, with more features and flexibility that goes beyond what CNET offers.
One major part that I think would be great is something that most of us need, a break from reading/sifting through thousands of blog posts a day. It would be so much easier if we could subscribe to, and contribute to a feed where it is filtered/created by Buzztown.
ANOTHER SOCIAL NETWORK! UGH!
I know, I know, I know. I don't want to be responsible for keeping up with any other profile on yet another social networking thing. You don't have to, you could just spectate and read, or you can post anonymously. Or you could join, even with an OpenID. Or you can make, yet another account.
Bottom line, I think we are over purely "social" social networks like Facebook and Myspace. What matters to me is having an impact on, and being a part of something I believe in. One of those things is Buzztown.
Some more main points about this "BOL Community"
- No Ads, never will be. If bandwidth gets expensive I'll ask for donations. Shouldn't be a problem though
- Built completely on open source. (Drupal- www.drupal.org)
- Will take suggestions comments, help, etc from you. I'm not expert, I'm always still learning about everything. If things go well I would like to be able to have others help with development, moderation, and policy making.
- We make all the rules.
I would love to hear any comments, questions, ya's, nay's, what your favorite color is.
And I'll say ahead of time; THANKS!
- Joel (other usernames on twitter pownce etc: mr.throk and throk)
I think it should be on it's own domain. I have a few that i've purchased but none seem to be a good fit.
I would love some suggestions for one. Network solutions may still hold a domain that is searched or something for five days, so just be weary of that. I'm not sure if this is still true or not.
I'll pay for the domain, I don't mind, or if you purchase one (I suggest godaddy) that would be great too.
suggestions:
1. This'd go well with Fordo and Shalin's post about BOL regional meetups!
2. If im gonna share emails and possibly phone numbers, it'd be nice to have a login so the info doesnt get picked up by spammers.

As I said on Twitter, I think this is a great idea, Just nice talking with people with the same interests ![]()
Alex
(Tales on Twitter etc)
Excellent!
I planned on integrating web calenders for meet-ups/events.
There will absolutely be a login if you wish to register, and you will be able to choose which information is seen publicly.
Oh, and I went ahead and got a Domain: BuzzTownCenter.org
I really like the idea! It would be an awesome way to keep in touch with everyone!
Just being honest, the forums are enough for me...
I hardly even use my LinkedIn, Friendster (yeah...I know, I know - I need to shut that down), or my University of Illinois alumni social network accounts. Considering how much time I spend on a computer being a newshound and podcast junkie, I need to guard against 2nd-life creeping into my 1st-life, ya know?
secretly though...it would be cool to have a spontaneous surge in my friend count. But BuzzTown forums and the wiki are more than plenty for me.
I was actually going to ask folks to have a little DFW area BOL get together at my place in a few weeks - just to get a little 1st-life vibe of the BOL community
Still, I really wish a ton of fun for you and anyone else who participates!
Best,
Shalin

hmm...what about a BOL listening party on the weekends...plan are to be firmed up for the one at my place ![]()
I don't have enough time as it is to pop over to the BOL forums as much as I'd like to, much less to a new page on top of here. I think some meet ups might be cool, but I wouldn't be able to travel very far from central Kentucky easily and, well, see the time comment above.
Don't get me wrong, I fully support the creation of a BOL community page and think it's a good idea. I just won't have much time to take part in it personally.
Maybe we could all just actually found BuzzTown. How's THAT for community! Fiber to every home, municipal wifi, and a gas pie cooling in every window. ![]()
And create a special interview that people must pass if they want to be a moderator.
(I hate spam)
and spelling errors (even though I make some myself.
Hm quiz eh? Like the BOL degree quiz or whatever?
I've got Akismet Spam filtering already installed. And moderators can submit spam if they come across it.
It's called Buzz Out Lounge Forum .
Works just fine as far as I can tell.
*Has Ads, but I don't mind them.
*Open Source? Makes no difference.
*Comments? well mine is you don't need to do it.
I'm down for this. Let me know what I can do to help.
Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of you weighing in on this, and Putting in your two cents.
I'd say the site is in an "alpha" stage right now. You can go to the site at http://buzztowncenter.org and signup for an invite.
If you have an OpenID, you can signup right away!
I have invited a few people to start testing out the site. It is still really early to let too many people in. I don't want to get too bogged down with tech support requests or anything while I'm still trying to roll out features. So if you don't get invited in right away don't be sad.
I should have a basic SRS written up sometime tonight. (I know I should have had one already, but I got excited!)
Thanks!
- Joel
