Dissatisfied

by KamaleshP - 3/16/08 1:17 PM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have been using Windows Vista Business for last 3 months on Lenovo ThinkPad T61, and my experience with Vista has been anything but satisfactory.
Pros:
1. Looks good
2. kind of smart compared to XP
3. (Seems to be) Secure -- I love this.
Cons:
1. Very buggy. Lot of systems like Windowing system, Internet explorer seem to crash once in a while.
2. Horrifying issues. Every no and then the taskbar disappears, icons move places when mouse is hovered over them, explorer doesn't display folder/drive contents.
3. Very resource intensive -- Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM 667 MHz, 100 GB 7200 RPM drive -- Vista eats up all of them all of the time.
4. When I log on or resume, it takes 2 minutes for Vista to adjust display, every time it starts with 800x600 and then waits for a while and then returns to (if ever) to my normal resolution.

I am frustrated with it. In fact it is a harassment of public by Microsoft by mrketing such a defective product.

NOTE: Just to make facts clear, I have installed every known and applicable Vista and ThinkVantage update from BIOS to OS, but sill I am facing the same issues.

VISTA SUCKS!

Not satisfied at all

by geralda - 3/16/08 6:18 PM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I previously had Win 98 which was ok for my use but my computer died and I had to get a new Dell about a year ago and was not given any option but Vista. I have Vista Home basic and I hate it. Everytime I open it there is one more problem popping up. First, there were no proper drivers for peripherals, even those disks which came with the computer. Second it is much slower than Win 98(takes 30seconds by the clock just to log off of dial up). I have had problems with every utility. Next time I will certainly get an Apple.

do a Google search on OS X problems first

You will find so many hits. The link is one with a Mac showing a blue screen of death.

For the most part I'm finding Vista to work well on my laptop and desktop, both of which came with it installed and have adequate resources to run it. Internet explorer has crashed a few times on the desktop. Once in a while some weird stuff happens, but not often. But it's a gazillion times more stable than 98 ever was for me. The comparison is laughable -- 98 was routinely seizing up multiple times a day. XP was a godsend.

Vista isn't the improvement that XP was, but it's not replacing something that was so screwed up as 98.

I want to own a Mac someday. They're cute. Hope they get the bugs worked out by the time I make a purchase. Oh, and if you do buy a Mac, be careful. Seems to have an insidious effect on personality:

If you don't know how then it's simple enough to find out. All you have to do is go to the Forum of whatever distro you're using and ask politely for help there.

OR you can find a Linux User Group (LUG) in your area by going here and take a couple of simple steps:

http://www.linux.org/groups/

If you're a Gamer, NOT to worry!!! :) There are all sorts of games for Linux now and more and more new ones are popping up all the time.

AND for your Windoze/Mac based games/progs there are always things like WINE, VMWare and more to run those through. Your Distro Forum or LUG can help you set all that up. ;) :D

http://www.winehq.org/

http://www.vmware.com/

Are you in Graphics? Just look here for a sample of what Linux offers in the way of Graphics apps:

http://www.linfo.org/software_artists.html

?:| Why spend all kinds of money on greedy companies who don't give a ratz pahtoot about anything but their bottom line when you can get Linux for little or no cost for the OS and with no need to replace older hardware and periferals? ?:|

http://www.psychocats.net/essays/whichdistro

http://distrowatch.com/

If you're dissatisfied with Windoze you may be glad you checked out the above links.

If you still like Windoze/Mac but may want to experiment with Linux you can get a hold of bootable CDs from the Distro Sites or your local LUG. Bootable CDs are a GREAT way to learn about Linux while leaving your resident OS ALONE since you'll be running the Linux OS from your CD-ROM bybassing your Hard Drive altogether! B-)

If you're a Windoze/Mac "Zealot"...well, to each his/her own! ;) ;\

Vista Ultimate

by drewski97 - 3/16/08 8:36 PM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It is very fast! I am surprised at how fast it is.

Vista Ultimate. Is very fast?

by Albertv - 3/22/08 6:24 AM In reply to: Vista Ultimate by drewski97

that's what I thought when I bought my high powered Laptop PC. I rolled it back to XP and very fast got a new meaning. Xp is at lest 100% faster than Vista Ultimate and halve as demanding on the hardware. roll it back to XP and than tell us how fast Vista Ultimate is.

Linux is not an option on many Laptops because for many there are no drivers available.

Now I'm satisfied!

by BridgetW - 3/17/08 4:22 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I went from using Windows '98 to Vista Home Premium Edition. Obviously, any change would have been drastic! Learning Vista was no big deal; I like it. What I DIDN'T like was that I had to go out and buy a new printer, new software, new game controller and a new USB hub. That really fried me that nothing I had worked (everything I had was compatible with XP, and on this forum all I kept hearing about was how great XP was and how Vista screwed everything up). So, I kind of had a bad attitude from the get-go. But now that I have all new stuff (along with the new computer my Vista came preloaded with), I'm having fun again. And by the way, I also went from dial-up to cable internet. Lots of big changes around here!

I Like It Now

by markcynt - 3/22/08 8:10 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I bought a new Velocity Micro A50 back in October. It came stock with Vista Ultimate. It would crash or freeze every 3-5 hrs. My reliability rating hovered around 2. These problems inspired me to learn how to dual boot, then triple boot. Around a month ago I noticed the stability VERY SLOWLY improving to the point that my reliability rating hovered around 3. The highest single rating I got was between 8-9. I installed SP1 on Tuesday and it reset my reliability monitor and now it reads a perfect 10. It's been just that, perfect, stable and more responsive. I hated it then but I like it now.

My rating is only a 3!

by BridgetW - 3/22/08 9:36 AM In reply to: I Like It Now by markcynt

My rating has been a 3 since I plugged my new computer in! Under the rating there is a link to either "shop Dell" or shop Microsoft" to "increase my rating". What's up with that?

That's Not What I Was Talking About

by markcynt - 3/22/08 10:02 AM In reply to: My rating is only a 3! by BridgetW

I was talking about the reliability and performance monitor. Type reliablity in the search bar and you'll find it. After you get into the reliability and performance monitor click on reliability and you'll see what I mean. You're talking about the windows experience index. That can only get up to 5.9. I'm at 5.7 only because of my processor which scored a 5.7. Everything else scored a 5.9.

I have Vista Home Premium

by bettyinsweden - 3/24/08 11:30 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have had Vista for one month on a new Lenova laptop. It is different from XP. Since I cleaned out the junk and bought Office 2007 I am very content. It is a new learning process as things are different. I started out in the 1990s with a WEB-TV. I am over 70 years of age and if I can make this adjustment I feel proud of myself.
Now, if I could only get rid of the "USER CONTROL" thingy it would be bliss. :-))

How To Get Rid Of 'User Account Control'..

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 3/24/08 11:42 AM In reply to: I have Vista Home Premium by bettyinsweden

Open the Control Panel (Classic Style), then double click on "User Accounts", then in the "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off", UNCHECK the box for "User Account Control". Reboot the computer.

Once that's done, Vista may warn you of the lack of security by throwing a red or yellow warning shield in the lower right corner/system tray. You can disable that as well by opening Control Panel, then the "Security Center" icon, then select the "Don't Notify me and don't display the icon" option.

Hope this helps.

Vista is sound

by michael.gillott - 3/24/08 2:08 PM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am using Vista Home Premium, I bought one of the first disc's on sale here in the U K, I have been running it for over a year with only 2 problems, 1, was the Ethernet driver which was updated within 24 hours and 2, Windows Defender packed in and Service Pack 1 brought it back to life. Its a sound operating system and enjoyable to use so I am very satisfied.
You guy's running Linux and X P, arguments you are putting forward on whats best will solve nothing, its horses for courses, they all have their place, I just think Vista is a good all rounder and a worthy successor to X P.
