And also please try to uninstall the Security Software completly
Disable he Startup items and third party services, ( start> msconfig> startup > disable all, servicece> put a check mark in the hide all Microsoft services, Disable All. Press apply and ok , Restart the computer.
Rename the Software distribution floder( C\windows\softwaredistribution
and also rename catroot2(C\windows\system32\catroot2)
Before renaming : stop the BITS, Cryptographic and the windows update service( services.msc)
after renaming please do not forget to start these services

Vista will most likely continue to have problems untill SP2. There are virtually no programs that work properly with Vista, excluding Office 2007. I would not upgrade untill after what is heard of about SP1. I recently had Vista on one of my IBM laptops and it slowed the computer, caused problems, ect. and I ended up going back to Windows XP. It's a waste of money untill somthing good is heard about SP1.
I installed SP1 with nary a problem. All of my programs: Palm Desktop, Nero, BitDefender 2008, Acoustica Labelmaker, MPEG Video Wizard DVD, IrfanView, Canon Printer, etc, etc, work perfectly.
My Gateway laptop works smooth as silk with Vista.
What are you running. Stone age DOS programs? Most people haven't had any problems getting programs to run on Vista. Making a statement like that is just rediculous and absolutley not true. I have 100's of program running on several different Vista installs. I haven't run into anything that will not run on Vista.
Vista came with my new laptop and have been using it for over six months. Vista has a few nice whistles and bells but you need a pc with plenty of grunt to run it anywhere near the speed that XP runs at.
So unless you are buying a new beefy PC, stick with XP.
TIP: if you find your XP seems to be running slower than it first did then consider doing this.
Back up your data and settings.
Ensure you have your program installation discs.
Wipe the old XP installation and install it fresh.
If your pc came with a Recovery CD then it makes the job pretty quick.
Be prepared for a bunch of updates afterwards because you will be back to square one with the Windows patches etc.
I have done this to many computers and it has proven to be the most time effective way to get XP runnning well again. Over time XP gets sluggish due to a variety of things which are swiftly dealt with using this method. It beats mucking around with virus/spyware removal and registery cleaners.
It is not time to downgrade to Vista. Probably never will be. I tried an RC version of SP1 and it was a bigger disaster than the original version. Even their error reporting website did not function. If you want to improve over Windows XP, find a copy of Windows 2000 Pro.
I tried to download it today on my new laptop that I bought last November. I got the blue screen of death, the computer would not start up despite me trying numerous times. I eventually gave up and got online from my desktop with tech support from HP. She advised me to start up and hit F11 until I got to the restore feature. I did it and restored it back to a time when it was working OK. She said that one of the files in SP1 was corrupted. She also said that HP does not advise any changes to the OS of any of its computers whether it be Vista SP1 or anything else. So I guess I won't be downloading Vista SP1 anytime soon, or at least while my notebook is still under warranty.
Unless you want to be an early adopter, I would advise staying with Windows XP, if you are satisfied, with it's operation.
When Vista is working it cooks. But all too often it slows, and freezes inexplicably. Example: Loading Windows Media Player....all too often it starts to open, and then hangs and the title bar says (not responding). Also sometimes USB devices don't restart correctly after coming out of hibernation/sleep. Even after downloading a patch from MS, all too often this happens after hib/sleep.
Window Media Center....good for TV bad for music especially if you have a lot of files.
Also sometimes when listening to MP3 files WMP skips. Retry on Real Player works. Since I bought a new computer (Gateway) in Oct 07, it had vista installed. So there was no going back. I just purchased a budget model E-machines(Gateway budget line), (with Windows XP Home Sempron processer). In some very big respects this xp budget model outperforms my Expensive Quad Core Gateway. I purchased the budget model just so I would have one before they stopped selling XP in June.
Final advice. Stay with XP until its time to get a new computer.
It has been delayed due too driver problems but is available on new computers or will be soon. It maybe released next month.
When it is released it will be released on a staggered bases some getting it sooner then other depending on there computer hardware configuration. If your computer can run it it will be downloaded if not you will need to wait.
I was in the Beta test but never got it to install. It had many installation problems that might haunt the release. Drivers have also been a concern for many. The IT community has it now so improvements are still underway.
I believe what I've said here is correct but can and maybe changing as I type.

Also, I have been running this OS for sometime now and it did have a few snag's in it when first released but it is working very well now.
If your having a problem please list it on the Vista forum and we'll help you fix it.
Do use 2GB of RAM if you have a desk top computer.

Hope this helps.

I thought the question is/was should the users who already have Vista download and install Service Pack 1, not should one install Vista. I will be installing it as I soon as get around to it. I see no credeiable reason to wait. This whole issue appears to be like the Windows XP SP2 nonsense of a few years ago. I also doubt the poster who claimed to be a Microsft employee is a Microsoft employee.
Do as Grif Thomas advised a few days ago.
Run a virus scan.Clean out all the extra junk such as temp flies and temp internet file.
Do a defrag and check disk. Just make sure that your computer is clean.
7 of use have installed SP1 with only one problem and that was because he left "AnyDVD' running in the back ground and it screwed up his DVD/CD drive, which was easily fixed.
My update appeared Wednesday, 3/19. Since I had done a backup Tuesday night, I downloaded and installed the update, a process that took a few minutes. Complete instructions and warnings about some preparation steps were provided before the download started. I haven't had any problems since, but neither have I seen any noticeable speed increases. I understand that most of the improvements are under the hood, and many involve features that my Home Premium version of Vista doesn't have. The update message showed a range of download file sizes, based on what your system needs. This is the site with all of the requisite info, including an extensive list of the fixes: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/bb738089.aspx.
BTW I've had Vista since February, 2007 and have not had any more problems with it that I had with Windows XP on my previous computer. At least 20 major programs are installed, about half of which were originally designed for XP. A couple need the compatibility features, but most run in Vista's native state. But Vista does require a decently-configured computer! Mine is a dual-core HP Pavilion Media Center with 4 GB of RAM, along with an NVidia 8800 GT graphics card. If you're not willing to invest the $$$, don't even think about messing with Vista!
I just downloaded Vista SP1 yesterday on my laptop when it became available to me via automatic update. I them went to Microsoft.com to download it on my desktop and they advise to wait until mid-April.
I don't understand why it came via automatic update, but I would follw their instructions and wait.
FYI...so far no problems on my laptop though. ![]()
