When I log onto the internet one of the programs is getting on and downloading and uploading full time. My internet connection is via modem and my connection speed is usually around 24 Kbps. I thought I had turned off all automatic updating. I like to know what is or isn't grabbing the net before I allow it.
My system is a HP Pavilion a1410n
Preloaded with Win XP pro multimedia
I installed Norton Internet Security in 07 which blocked all internet connections and asked if I would allow a program to hook in before it allowed it. I upgraded to Norton 360 in 08 and it must have removed that feature because it was no longer there. I would reinstall Norton Internet except it might conflict with N 360
Is there a software that can tattle on the net connections and let me know what is grabbing the net? Opening up "task manager" and searching for activity from any of the listed programs doesn't give me a clue as to what is running in stealth stealing bandwidth.
PrcView (Process Viewer) shows you all the software or services currently running on your PC, and in doing so helps ensure your PC's not infected with malware. It shows you--in a simple-to-read list--all programs and services, and provides a wealth of detail about each. It shows the file name, the file path, and how much memory and CPU each uses. For more details, double-click any listing, and you'll get even more information, including the full program name, its publisher, the file version, and much more.

Marianna, many thanks. I left an open browser window sitting on some web page as I use tabs a lot of times. Obviously it was constantly downloading off my computer. That infuriates me to no end thinking I was letting a web page drain information off my computer. Closing Firefox and opening it up again cured the information siphoning problem.
Now I need to find me an add on for Firefox to keep it from automatically bleeding information off my computer.
thanks again
Barb
