I have a 4 year old Dell PC with Raid 1 250GB hard drive (2x 250GB mirrored). I would like to change the hard drives for larger/faster drives (maybe 2x1GB for example). I think it is time to do this as my current HD is basically full and at 4 years old HD problem may be just around the corner. I use Acronis True Image Home 10.0 to back up my current hard drive. What is the easiest way to change/upgrade the hard drives, esp that they are Raid 1?
Look at the documentation for the RAID controller and it's management software. I can't tell you since the make, model and such of the raid in use is not in your post.
For example, Microsoft's OS has a RAID 1 feature and they document how to break (not a bad thing!) and restore it's RAID 1 at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323432
I have never taken the documentation out of the Dell shrinkwrap. I have documentation of the Promise FastTrak Serial ATA RAID Controller Card. As I have XP Home Edition, I am using the WinXP driver. In the doc broadbrush steps are outlined as to what to do if 1 drive fails and how to do a check using SMART to examine the HDs for early indications of pending drive failure. To replace current drives (250GB) with bigger drives (1000GB for example) the doc says to contact Dell support! As I said, I would like to upgrade BOTH raid 1 HDs.
In device manager the HDs are listed as: "Promise 1x2 Mirror/RAID 1 SCSI Disk Device". Driver is Microsoft, Date 01-07-2001, version 5.1.2535.0, Digital signer Microsoft Windows Publisher. I can ask MS to update the driver, but do not want to break something that is working with an "upgrade"
You'll probably have to do this the old fashioned way. Backup, reconfigure, restore from backup.
