memory question

and i found this on amazon...it says it's marked down by $173 and only costs $46.99. is this cheap for a memory card?

How much it holds depends upon what camera you are using and what resolution the camera is set to.
You can estimate it in this manner:
If your camera has an 8 megapixel sensor, and is taking .jpg photos, you can divide 4 gig by 4 meg and get an approximate answer.
(.jpg photos are compressed files, approx 1/2 the size of the sensor capacity)
4 gig is 4,000,000,000
4 meg is 4,000,000
for an answer of at least 1,000 photos.
The memory card in the advertisement is a good brand and at a very good price.

Resolution determines the number

With the resolution set to its highest setting, it stands to reason it will hold less than the number of lower resolution shots. Checking the specs for your camera will give you the details you need to calculate these parameters.

It appears to be a pretty good price for that particular memory card. You can find 8GB memory cards for the same price from other manufacturers.

Then go and get your owners manual. Open it up to one of he first pages that says "index" and look for the appendei. Look in the appendix of your owners manual for something like "Memory cards and estimaed capacities"
That is where you will find your answer. If you don't have a manual, then download the pdf by googling your camera model and name and adding pdf to the search term.

by phxmark123 - 3/22/08 4:26 AM In reply to: memory question by cameraguyyMy Olympus E-500 that I just sold to upgrade to a E-510 when set to standard jpg (about email size pictures) couldn't count that high. My 2gig card would stop counting at 9999. So I know I was able to take at least that many pictures. So it depends on your camera. My E-500 8mgp camera shooting RAW mode recorded pictures at about 13.4 megs and my new E-510 10mgp camera in the same mode takes RAW pictures at 9.78 megs a picture. About 40 pictures in that mode with a 1 gig card.
