by comp459 - 3/18/08 11:54 AM

Have any of you tried this service??? I am trying to work on my mom's laptop...it is slow...slow...slow....but as I not very knowledgeable...I need to make sure and backup here stuff in case!!! She is visiting so does not have her original Windows CD or I could just install their neat ntbackup program. Don't want to have to purchase something. Thank you in advance.

Not as much as I would like ;)

I'm not personally knowledgable of Windows Live OneCare Backup and Restore, but if you are worried you might damage the contents of someone else's machine perhaps it may be best left alone.

You don't mention what operating system is on the computer or what types of files you wish to backup. Perhaps you didn't notice the "Note" in red above the text box in witch you typed your message, i.e.
Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.

Personally I have found NTBACKUP to be somewhat unreliable as it will occasionally restore some files to incorrect locations and sometimes not at all.

Probably the best backup is maintained on removable media such as CD, DVD, external hard drive or flash drive. If you are only concerned with protecting some documents and programs or programs setup files, the fasted and least costly would be to copy them to a CD/R or CD/RW. And the leastly costly (really free) way to backup the entire system including settings is to create System Restore points. For just in case, a couple of SR points would be wise.

Another (or additional) option would be to create and use an indiviual Profile that way you won't even have to tamper with documents, etc. in your Mom's profile.

Hope something here is helpful.

OneCare isn't free

by ramarc - 3/18/08 7:16 PM In reply to: Know anything about Windows Live OneCare Backup and Restore? by comp459

i paid $25 for 3 PCs when it was on sale (usually $50). it's backup feature is more for file saving rather than system recovery (like a failed boot drive).

i know you don't want to spend anything, but syncback is a great product for $30 and you can legally use it on up to 5 PCs.

MS backup

by Leop - 3/21/08 7:47 PM In reply to: Know anything about Windows Live OneCare Backup and Restore? by comp459

Your best bet is to buy a good backup software, or just backup your data from your documents. Then restore you system to where is was. Ususally all your data stays where you had it, if you just restore. Now if you want to backup your hold Drive thats a different horse of a different color. MS backup is not very good at doing this, believe me been there done that.

Windows Live OneCare

by SevynNina - 3/21/08 9:20 PM In reply to: Know anything about Windows Live OneCare Backup and Restore? by comp459

I am using Windows Live OneCare.. from my experience it only backs up some files and pictures. It doesn't back up your XP or programs etc. I suggest you buy an external hard drive to back up her computer. I am checking into them myself. I have had to format my computer and although the process was pretty easy I lost everything ...luckily I had most of my program download codes, passwords, and registrations saved in a book. But any pictures I didn't have saved on a disk were lost.

AN EFFORT TO ASSIST YOU

by CustomComputers - 3/21/08 10:57 PM In reply to: Know anything about Windows Live OneCare Backup and Restore? by comp459

As has been stated in other posts ..WLOCare does not back up the entire system..but only Documents, pics, and favorites.

I am unable to discern if you have One Care and which version?
The latest version is 2.0.2500.

Here you may get some questions answered about the usage of WLOC.

Should you need a full backup of the system..it would require the purchase of a sizeable external hard drive & a program such as Acronis
True Image.

ntbackup

by tedtks - 3/22/08 1:09 AM In reply to: Know anything about Windows Live OneCare Backup and Restore? by comp459

I have steered clear of 'live ' stuff so far. I dont like
what they have done with some of it. it usually requires
More clicks to do the same things that used to be doing.
anyway - I have use the std ms backup for a long time due to
not finding anything that was worth a pile in my estimation.
prefferably free ?!?! LOL
I keep only the xp of system on drive c:... and everything else
goes to other partitions or drives.
I make a full c: backup about once a week - but - you have
to run it as ' custom ' - its one of the selections on the backup
restore wizard pages. I check the box for the c: drive and then
down to ' system state '
this brings me right back to where I was before whatever
disaster blew me off.
One more BUT - I can not get shadow copy to run. it wont start
when backup calls it. MS fails to answer my email complaints
and there is nothing in the long list of faq's
what this does is makes backup skip over some of the files that
are being used by the system. they are mostly .log files and
a couple others that are not really important - but - there seems
to be one or two [not always the same ones] that I dont have a clue
what they are. So far it hasnt been a problem - mostly due to the
fact that I have reloaded xp and then run the restore with overwrite
so that everything is back up to normal. no more downloading a
zillion updates - and all the icons are there ready to go.

HATED IT

by markcynt - 3/22/08 6:27 AM In reply to: ntbackup by tedtks

I tried it and didn't like it. Then I tried to uninstall and no matter what I tried it wouldn't uninstall. Luckily I had a very recent Image of my system so I just restored it. Microsoft even has a special tool just to uninstall the program, which ran and said unistall complete but it was still there! So they let me download it knowing this?! Boy I'll tell you I was rip snortin mad.

No Go

That didn't work either. I had already tried that. I ended up restoring from a partition image. Lesson learned.

well - its free and

by tedtks - 3/22/08 1:54 PM In reply to: HATED IT by markcynt

it comes with xp pro so anytime u reload - there it tis.
I havent found a backup that I like. I have tried a few
from cnet download but a lot of them dont due full partition
backs. nor system state. some even are limited to just
new files and/or mp3 stuff. and, one 'syncback' or whatever
its called, cant remember, only copies files that have been
updated to syncronize 2 drives. used, I assume, mostly for
multi pc file maint on a network.

never had these problems in the ' old ' days. a backup program
would copy EVERYTHING even if it was being used by the system or
something. hell, where u think copying program diskets came from. LOL
But, as with all the really good programs - they got bought up by
outfits like norton - who, instead of upgradeing them for use with
larger and new cd drives, they dumped them so u have to buy their
piece of poor functioning crap.
hmmmnm.... seems like i have been down this road b4 LOL

I Have XP PRO

by markcynt - 3/22/08 2:45 PM In reply to: well - its free and by tedtks

And Live One Care did not come with it. You must have an HP or Dell or something like that. XP Pro has a backup but not that and it doesn't make an image.

nope

by tedtks - 3/22/08 3:16 PM In reply to: I Have XP PRO by markcynt

I build my own. xp pro w/sp2 and all security junk backups.
full tower, thermaltake 750w ps + 500w ps, asus p5w dh mobo, 2g ram, dual intel w/thermaltake cooler, asus eax1900xtx vid w/512m,
2 seagate 120g HD, 2 sony cd/dvd drives, digiwave HDTV cable card.
4 120mm +1 80mm fans, and all possible ways air gets in is filtered.

Go to -start/all programs/accessories/systemtools/backup
right click on backup and look at properties
%SystemRoot%\system32\ntbackup.exe
looks like ntbackup to me.
it does a full c: backup with system state (following my prev
post desc for 'custom')
my last hair pulling dissaster - had to do a reload cause nothing
else worked. as soon as the fresh reload was done, ran the restore
from my last backup - ta da exactly back to 5 days befor hell.
only had to do 3 sec updates and ready to go.
I am now adding an external seagate 250g that I have partitioned and
will restore my next backup to the ext "c:" partition so I wont have
to do another install next time. that is 'if' the bios will see the
usb connection. Ill find out soon as my new ext case gets here. the
last one didnt work at all - bad power supply. LOL LOL but it was cheap LOL

OK

by markcynt - 3/22/08 3:30 PM In reply to: nope by tedtks

Maybe it does work like you say, but in all the years I've had XP I've never had to restore except for system restore. And it's certainly not Live One Care.

dead LIVE

by tedtks - 3/22/08 3:45 PM In reply to: OK by markcynt

in case u missed it in prev post - I dont do live anymore than
I have to - or is forced on me. they updated windows hotmail to
a 'clasic' version with no choice for the user and want u to go
up to their full live. well, as is usual with this kind of new
junk where they change things just cause they are bored and have
nothing else to do - it takes more clicks to do some of the stuff
that used to be just one click - and they want me to upgrade? to
the full LIVE -
ha - not till there is no choice.
just like vista. too many stupid changes and bugs. I will wait
till xp isnt supported anymore and nothing will work on it.
LOL LOL
I still use my turbo 286 for some old games. dos 3.5
ummmm... in case u dont know what a 286 is - well... its OLD cpu.
and dos is b4 they decided that we no longer needed to go into dos
and stopped giveing us the tools that ran in dos.
for the masses they are probably right. but us old guys know
what was what and in some cases still today its nice to have some
of those old tools.
