Making HD recording of John Adams from HBO worked for me

by mnogrady - 3/18/08 10:00 AM

I hope I haven't missed an existing discussion, but in reference to yesterdays (episode 682)TIVO/Cable Card/HBO/Comcast report, I recorded the John Adams Miniseries from HBO and have a TIVO-HD with Cable cards from Comcast and it works fine for me.
I have started and stopped it and replayed it a number of times. It even let me mark it "Delete when I say". I don't see the problem is.

Worked for me too (TiVo HD/Cox Rhode Island)

I posted this in an e-mail:

"I'm a long time TiVo user and, most recently, a TiVo HD user. Being a TiVO HD user, I am now forced to use cable cards. I'm a Cox cable subscriber and so far, my experience has been pretty good...I would say great, but cable cards (in general) can be a little kooky. Every now and then I have a few minor hiccups, but nothing that a quick call to Cox can't fix. Sometimes, depending on your cable provider, those hiccups can be the copy protection on premium channels. Several people at TiVoCommunity.com have complained about their cable companies accidentally placing the wrong restrictions on their premium channels. More often than not, a call to the cable provider can resolve this issue...but if your cable provider is evil, sometimes it's not a mistake and it cannot be resolved. I also happened to TiVo John Adams on HBO and did not have the "0×07" restriction. I had the "0×02" restriction. Basically, the "0×02" restriction means that I can only watch John Adams on the TiVo box that it was recorded on. I cannot transfer it to another TiVo or computer (which I can do with all non-restricted shows). But, I can keep it on my TiVo indefinitely. TiVo has no control over copy protection...it's all in the hands of content providers. The copy protection is a requirement of the CableCARD specification...which has different levels of restriction that the content provider chooses to apply to their content. The CableCard specification for cards used in CableLabs supported devices (TiVo) is mandated by the FCC. So, this issue is not TiVo specific. It also affected the Cox HD DVR (which also used a cable card) that I had before I purchased my TiVo HD. At least the TiVO HD allows me to transfer shows from one TiVo to another TiVo in my house (MRV, or, Multi-Room viewing), or transfer it to my computer with TiVoToGo. With the HD DVR that Cox gave me, I had none of those options...nor the ability to download CNET podcasts! Ok, I'll stop now. I just can't help it, I love my TiVo. I've been following the whole FCC/CableCard thing recently so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Love the show guys!"

Time Warner

in our area uses SDV for the HD content. This makes current cable cards useless. I'd love to have an HD Tivo, but until this is sorted out, I'm still using our series 1 and series 2.

Do these restrictions apply to cable DVRs?

by gconnery - 3/20/08 4:18 PM In reply to: Making HD recording of John Adams from HBO worked for me by mnogrady

I'm wondering if these restrictions apply only to the Tivo (or other cablecard based DVRs) and NOT to the cable company DVRs, i.e. the Motorola or Scientific Atlanta DVRs the cable company rents to you. Seems like this would be worthy of a lawsuit or FCC filing on Tivo's part if true.

It might be hard to test the multi-room option with cable co DVRs, since most of them haven't enabled multi-room features yet, or haven't deployed those models, though I think AT&T supports such things, and maybe Verizon. But the 0x7 restriction on John Adams on HBO in certain areas should be easy enough to verify.

Anybody know?

Some detailed discussion on Tivo Forums

by gconnery - 3/20/08 4:26 PM In reply to: Do these restrictions apply to cable DVRs? by gconnery

There is a detailed discussion of the Copy Control byte on the Tivo Community Forums at the following link:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=384240

Includes discussion of what the 0x3 byte means (copy never), includes links to the federal regs restricting its use to on demand programming (meaning setting it on HBO channels is illegal), as well as details on how a Comcast customer was able to get his local Comcast affiliate to correctly set the bits and resolve the issue in his area--p.s. it isn't HBO that did this.

And just when I was about to cancel my HBO subscription...
