help with DLP choice

by bavarian123 - 3/6/08 11:51 AM

I haven't done much research. What I do know:
I have 24" depth avail. in cabinet. no need for flat screen
Like to maximize 60" width between speakers (58" - 65" +/-)
1080p res. a must!
contrast is important, say near 10,000:1.
HDMI input (only need one)for my reciever.
I have blue ray.
I'm not the gaming type.
Price range $1,500 - $2,000.
I do like Samsung but not stuck on this.
This research is killing me so I would really appreciate advise to save my sanity!

Samsung is good for DLP

Good contrast or not, I would recommend a calibration disc to help you find the best color, sharpness levels, etc. I think BluRay DVE is very affordable.

The one thing that I HATE about my bro's Sammy is that the IR sensor is right in the middle! How the heck are you supposed to put a center channel and use the remote????

I guess they expect you to shove the center into the cabinet below, but NO WAY FOR ME! I believe in good audio...

Anyways, he got his from Costco.

Samsung works for me

I have the HLT6187, and if you catch it at the right time , you can get it for $1699 at Amazon. I think for the money you can't beat that deal, and the set plays HD better than a lot of the sets I looked at.

I hear you, Riverledge, but have to regard both plasma & DLP

by NM_Bill - 3/19/08 4:09 PM In reply to: DON'T BUY A DLP, PERIOD. by Riverledge

especially Sony SXRD as valuable ideas to not waste time about now. I do have a Sammy DLP, but would love a Sony SXRD instead.

Either way, people must get get these things while still available. If waiting for absolute lkowest clearance price, you will probably be left high & dry.

I presume Sony SXRDs are now hard to find. Don't wait if seeking one of the awesome Pioneer plasmas.

Makers will push LCD for their lowest unit production cost, not because they are somehow better.

Plasmas that Pioneer will only develop internal processing for is an unknown now. Panny plasmas are both good & good values.

Is your wait two months advise tied to new model year introductions?

YES BILL, MY TWO MONTH "WAIT & SEE" SUGGESTION IS..........

by Riverledge - 3/19/08 11:51 PM In reply to: I hear you, Riverledge, but have to regard both plasma & DLP by NM_Bill

GEARED TOWARDS THE NEWER INTRODUCTIONS, FROM PANASONIC, PIONEER, AND SONY.

**BY ALL MEANS, IF AVAILABLE, SEEK OUT SONY'S SXRD MODELS 50", 55", and 60" KDS-xxA3000 MODELS. THEY HAVE BECOME VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND!!!

THEY are already considered CLASSICS much like the SONY KD-34XBR960 &
KD-34SX955 CRT MODELS.

Best to all,

Riverledge.

Think laser?

by kcfvegas - 3/20/08 9:08 AM In reply to: help with DLP choice by bavarian123

The TVs that are being mentioned are good TVs, but if you can wait until this fall, Mitsubishi is bringing out their new laser TVs that are supposed to blow any DLP away. With double the color reproduction, higher contrast ratios, deeper blacks, a brighter picture for viewing in a brighter room, and no bulb to replace ever, they sound like a great TV. All for about the same price as a DLP set.
