TROUBLE DOWNLOADING AVE ANTI-VIRUS

by bluelady58 - 3/16/08 7:31 PM

I HAVE WINDOWS XP AND HAVE BEEN TRYING TO DOWNLOAD AVG ANTI-VIRUS FREE VERSION. I KEEP GETTING AN ERROR STATING:
CRC FAILED IN AVGSETUP.EXE
UNEXPECTED END OF ARCHIVE

I HAVE DIAL UP SO IT IS VERY SLOW.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, I HAVE NORTON ANTIVIRUS AND WAS PLANNING ON GETTING RID OF IT, SO I WANTED TO HAVE SOME KIND OF BACK UP FOR WHEN MY SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRES.

The usual cause for this are DOWNLOAD ACCELERATORS

Trouble downloading AVG

by gsconsolvo - 3/17/08 3:22 PM In reply to: TROUBLE DOWNLOADING AVE ANTI-VIRUS by bluelady58

You will need to uninstall Norton AntiVirus first. You cannot run two(2) antivirus programs at the same time (especially with Norton). If you have trouble uninstalling Norton, go to their web site (Symantec) and they have an uninstall app to do that. Make sure you get rid of ALL of Norton, then you will be able to install AVG antivirus with no problem. Hope this helps

(NT) Great answer-uninstall any other AV program 1st!

Trouble with AVG

by Keith_C_A - 3/17/08 4:48 PM In reply to: TROUBLE DOWNLOADING AVE ANTI-VIRUS by bluelady58

Well it is correct that you will have problems with running 2 Antivirus programs on your system. It is highly likely that your Norton program is treating AVG as if it were a virus, therefore preventing it from downloading or rather installing.

I recently had a similar discussion with a friend who had Trend 2008 on their machine, it would install almost to the end and then roll back, and it said that it could not install.

If you were to Uninstall Norton, install AVG and Re-install Norton, it is highly likely that the two will conflict. IF norton will reinstall that is.

One antivirus program will see the other antivirus program as a threat to the syatem and do what it can to disable it. I have known this to happen to BOTH AV programs, and render the machine unprotected, then guess what? An actual virus got in and killed the system.

To sumarise you should only attempt to run ONE AV program.

Run 2 or 3 ANTI SPYWARE programs and even 2 Registry editors for cleanup purposes but ONE, 1, UN, Ein, Uno, AV Program.

Hope this tells you why, hope this helps.

UNEXPECTED END OF ARCHIVE

by BlueKnight - 3/17/08 5:23 PM In reply to: TROUBLE DOWNLOADING AVE ANTI-VIRUS by bluelady58

Your message is most likely due to the file not being completely downloaded.

I was able to download and install the AVG free version on my home system without problem. When installing it, I did have a problem with McAfee interfering -- forgot that the current AV program might not like another being installed on the same machine. Had to disable McAfee to get AVG to install, and it worked (as a precaution, disconnect from the Internet before doing this to be safe). I've been very happy with it since it does a full system scan faster than McAfee which was sucking my system dry of CPU cycles.

Download AVG again and give it a try.

I would also recommend DSL. You can probably find it for about the same price, possibly less than your standard dial costs. Checkout http://www2.dslextreme.com/ for one option. I've heard many say they're very happy with it including my manager.

THANKS EVERYBODY FOR YOUR HELP, WILL TRY TO GET RID OF NORTON AND SEE IF THAT HELPS.

AS FOR DSL, I WOULD LOVE IT. WHEN WE HOOKED UP THE COMPUTER THE PHONE COMPANY TRIED TO SELL ME ON IT 5 YRS AGO AND AT THE TIME I WASN'T INTERESTED IN THE ADDED EXPENSE. NOW THEY TELL ME IT IS NOT AVAILABLE IN MY AREA??? IT IS DOWN THE STREET BUT NOT AT MY LOCATION YET........ JOY OF LIVING IN THE STICKS!

I had the exact same problem

by lacustad - 3/17/08 5:37 PM In reply to: TROUBLE DOWNLOADING AVE ANTI-VIRUS by bluelady58

The only difference was, I didn't have that dreaded, useless, Norton on my system. The problem that I found was that I was using IE7. When I went back to IE6, I was able to download AVG in less than a minute. I have an 8 yr. old DELL that had ME on it, I replaced the O.S. with XP Pro. I am running a Pentium III 866, with 384 RAM, and 80 G harddrive. I am only using freeware for security.... AVG, ZoneAlarm, EasyCleaner, and Adaware. I have been using this as a second system in my home without incident for over a year and have speed that matches a lot of Pentium IV computers. Hope this helps.

Hi,
try Right mouse click on the tray icon for AVG. Launch the Control Centre. Highlight the line in the right hand window that says "Update Manager". Click on "Settings" (near the bottom, on the right.
You should see a pop-up window. It should have four tabs. You should click on "Dial-up".
Make sure "Use dial-up connection" is *NOT* ticked.
If you have broadband, you do *not* want AVG trying to use the modem.
While you're there, click on the "Advanced" tab and "Delete temporary files". If AVG asks you to reboot your PC after updating, you can do this instead, and then retry the updates.
Ok everything, and close all the windows.
I hope this helps.
H.

Same Product, slightly different downloading problem.

by jamdawg - 3/17/08 7:40 PM In reply to: trouble downloading AVG Anti-virus by denith

It's AVG Anti-Virus Free.

My problem is that it stops loading too soon and the icon appears on my desktop. I delete it because that type of corrupted file can damage your computer. (I recently had mine repaired.)

I've written to AVG (Both through the US Mail and email.) asking for a this on a disc so I can download it that way, but no reply. (...and these were written two or three weeks ago.)

AV solution

by btljooz - 3/17/08 8:11 PM In reply to: TROUBLE DOWNLOADING AVE ANTI-VIRUS by bluelady58

#1. The others are correct in that you can not run two Anti-virus programs Real-Time Protection at the same time and to get rid of Norton or any other AV you have now. BUT before you do that you need to CLEAN your computer with all of your anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-malware programs. The trick is to save the zipfile for later use instead of trying to run it through all your other programs. This is covered below. :)

#2. AVGarbage USED to be a neat little prog, but in the last couple of years it has become a bloated monsterous crapware. :| I used to use it myself until it got bloated, quit detecting as many viruses as it should and allowed my computer to become infested to the point I had to do a re-install of XP. When AVG became bloated and uselss I switched to Avast AV and LOVE it!!! It FREE and needs to be "Registered" but that is no big deal. It has a paid version, but the Free version does just fine!!! Check it out here:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

If you like what it says there, then you can download it here:

http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10019223.html

Or better yet, here:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I just favor downloading software from its own site if I can. ;)

IMPORTANT!: Save the zipfile to your desktop for use OFFLINE. ;)

BTW, you may want to follow these instructions (if so, print them off):

FIRST you want to set a Restore Point in case something goes wrong. Back up any and all files you NEED and/or want to keep, again, just in case something goes wrong. Regular backups are a good idea, anyway. B-)

When uninstalling and installing programs it is best to do it OFFLINE ...as in totally physically disconnected from the Net. This is because you want to do these activities without any programs running in the background so they don't get corrupted some how, INCLUDING anti-malware programs, firewalls, etc. Without your 'armor ware' running your computer can become infested in just minutes if left connected to the Net.

Once you get RID of your existing Anti-virus program you can then commence with installation of your new one. Simply click or double-click on the zipfile and follow the prompts until done.

After installation is complete, Press the Windows Key (between Control and Alt on my older keyboard; yours may be different) and the 'e' key simultaniously OR click on "My Computer" to open up the window where your drives are shown > Right-click on the drive where your XP is...almost always "Drive C" > Select "Properties" from the drop down menu > may as well do a Disk Clean-up while there > then click on the "Tools" Tab > In the box that says "Error Checking" click on the "Check Now" button > put a check mark in the top box that says "Automatically fix file system errors" (checking both boxes will make ScanDisk take foooreeeeverrrr) > click Start > OK > close any/all other open windows and turn off your computer. After at least 10-15 seconds turn your computer back on and allow ScanDisk to run. This may take a few minutes so be patient.

Now, make sure that no programs are running in the back ground (again). Go back to where you set ScanDisk to run. This time in the box labeled "Defragmentation" click the "Defragment Now" button. (You can close the "My Computer Window".) Defrag the computer. Now, if you have'nt ever done this or it's been a long time since you've done it, Defragging can take many HOURS! In this case, I would just turn off my monitor and let it go over night. The next day I would re-run the Defrag a couple more times recursively because one time rarely does the job completely even though the message box says it has. After Defragging at least three times I then set ScanDisk to run again.

Turn off your computer, re-connect to the Net again and re-boot with your anti-malware aresenal running. Be double-sure to update all of your anti-malware programs...especially any new ones you have just installed and run them. Remember: All the anti-malware programs in the world won't do a thing for you if not KEPT UP-DATED and USED on a regular basis!!! :D

I run mine every night before I shut down for the evening. However, Avast has such GREAT Real-Time Protection, I only run it about once a month or if it "Cries"...in the latter case I immediately run my chosen Online Scanner (see below) and then all of my 'armor ware' just to make double-sure I've got the infection cleaned up.

Now you can take your saved zipfile and move it to a second hard drive and/or burn it to CD or other removable media for future use in case you need to re-install your XP. B-)

In addition to your onboard anti-malware programs you will want to back them up with an online scanner. The one I like the best ( http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml ) is second only to a company I, personally, don't choose to do business with.

This way if something gets into your computer and disables any of your anti-malware programs you can still clean up your computer. Uninstall the disabled prog and then re-install it as per the above instructions.

I hope this helps. These instructions can ...and should... be used when installing ANY software. Good Luck!!! :D

AVG AND NORTON

by sgg - 3/18/08 8:01 AM In reply to: AV solution by btljooz

1.I read the forums and didn't note the following: Norton can be a terror to delete, often requiring you to delete in a certain sequence. Before one is satisfied it is gone, it pays to recheck Add/delete in the Control Panel AND run a complete machine search for NORTON. The only thing I have found more tenacious is the free AOL that comes on some machines.
In short, double check before you start the AVG install.

2. I run a paid for version, AVG 7.5 internet security; it does an excellent job. I guess the writer who spoke of bloat is describing the only problem I have had, excessive use of virtual memory - I've written AVG but the answer has not been adequate.

#1. You are absolutely correct about Norton being a nightmare from Hades to get rid of. I've seen it stated over and over again in forums everywhere that to completely get rid of Norton one must go to:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

to get the removal tool for it... AND even then, it's a good idea to run manual checks of the machine to make double-sure it's really ALL actually gone. (BTW: I used my search engine, typed in the term 'Norton Uninstaller' to get the above link. B-) )

#2. How do you KNOW for a FACT that your computer isn't infected with something that AVG doesn't look for? Have you run an on-line scanner? ?:|

The fact that Grisoft gives such poor customer service/tech support as evidenced on this board should give one a CLUE. ;\
