Go Simple

by Tech Boy Stevo - 3/14/08 9:10 PM In reply to: Great thurough answer by appman67

If audio, I would run a copper ground wire from a screw from the computer case to something that is grounded. Had this issue when trying to record from a cassette player to my cumputer. If this fails, try everything else the others have said!

The sound of your computer is working.

by razor66666 - 3/15/08 4:36 AM In reply to: hi by rumi641

The sound of your heat sink increase is from your computer working harder. I am assuming you don't stop downloading so it is probably better to understand why. It could be fixed by replacing your heat sink or adding another case fan might help. The problem is your computer is reading a request for more cooling. I would also look for a software on cnets download to monitor your computer and see if there is a noticable spike in heat when you are downloading. Is your computer shutting down or going slower. If it is shutting down or slowing down it could be your heat sink starting failing. I am figuring it is not failing needing more cooling, because it isn't shutting down.

Humming Computer

by Robert L Masters - 3/16/08 5:39 PM In reply to: Great thurough answer by appman67

I guess I am from the old school. Mostly TVs, when my Dell desktop starts to hum, I just slap it on the side at it stop. I know that isn't the right answer but it works. The sides hum, because the harddrive is running so fast it does make the sides vibrate. Of course if the bearings in your hard drive or your fan on your power supply are going bad, that isn't good. But since 1985 when my computers hum, I just slap them on the side and they stop humming. Now isn't that a professional answer.

PC Humming

Keep PC away from the fridge, wires around, radios, cell phones, TV anything that gives the acustic vibrations.

Hmmmmmmm

It's highly possible that your computer just doesn't know the words. I know this is the reason I hum sometimes.
okay, maybe that's NOT it.
check to see if the position of the case has changed recently and now, maybe it's been moved to where it's leaning on or touching something that would cause it's sound to resonate.
I have a brace under my desk which is mounted on the wall. My computer case was crowded over against the brace and the normal noise was now resonating and using the wall like a sound chamber. Of course when I moved the computer to open it up and see if something was vibrating, the noise stopped, then when I closed it up and slid it back under the desk, it started again. It tood a few times but I finally realized what it was and simply gave it a little more room.

Your advice to people is good. You should remind people to be careful
when cleaning their pc. The dust can be toxic to people . A face
mask should be used at all times . That the pc to A safe place when
blowing out the dust from the pc. The dust may cause breathing problems to the ones you love

My PC developed a hum, and I found it came from of of the two fans. I replaced the fan, and the hum is gone.

Hummer by dlauber

by sidsen - 3/15/08 9:59 AM In reply to: Be a Detective by dlauber

Congratulations to dlauber. The whole spectrum of hum gas been covered by him. I had the same problen on my Dell Latitude C600. Fortunately I could locate the source of the hum as coming from the cooling fan grille. On closer examination I found the fan was laden and caked with dust. Using dust-off I managed to clear the cakes on the blades completely. End of hum. That was two years back!

Name brand hard drives...

by darrenforster99 - 3/16/08 12:25 AM In reply to: Be a Detective by dlauber

"Hard drives of 160 GB size can generally be had for as little as $60 these days. Stick with name brands like Hitachi, Samsung, Western Digital, and Seagate."

One important warning you forgot is the IBM name brand, the IBM Deskstars aka IBM Deathstar have a really high tendency of failure, also usually the way these drives fail is by starting to "chirp" occassionally before suddenly just giving up without any warning. If your drive is an IBM Deskstar this could very well be where the hum is coming from, if this is the case don't continue to use it at all until you get a new drive or else you could risk it just suddenly dieing without any warning. I have had 3 of these drives die on me and would never go back to them, Seagate are really good as they offer a longer warranty than other drives (I think it's either 3 or 5 years).

CPU Fan

Not recommended to disconnect the CPU fan. Some OEM PC will disallow booting up with the CPU fan disconnected.

Hum coming from PC

by Papirin - 3/8/08 12:04 AM In reply to: Humming coming from my PC, what should be my concerns? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Well It's not clear if the hum,is exactly the name for noise, because I work with audio and we call hum when you hear a ground or humming noise that comes from the audio system,so if you hear noise, it should be the hard disk and his moving parts,I will like to ask you, if you have the CD where the XP operating system came, because you will need to buy a hard disk and install the XP in the new hard disk
as soon as posible, otherwise you will lose your data,We can do it either way, making a backup or Install every thing from scratch.you may e-mail me to papirin@coqui.net and I will help you to install the XP and to save the data on your noisy hard disk.

Humming PC's (Sounds like a good name for a band)

by Shasta3web - 3/8/08 12:39 AM In reply to: Humming coming from my PC, what should be my concerns? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had this problem recently and thought the worst also. The first things I checked were the vent holes and sure enough, they were all clogged with dust. I vacuumed them all nice and clean and now those noises are gone. I hope the cure to your noise problem is this easy to fix.
