tivo

by clashkid9 - 3/8/08 12:33 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have been using Tivo for 7 1/2 years. My only complaint is the hardrives keep wearing out after 12-15 months. My first 3 were 35GB which seems to wear out quicker. I understand these get alot of wear and tear as they are recording constantly when they are plugged in.

I'm still using my Panasonic PV-V4623S VCR, Here's why.

by DFN23 - 3/8/08 4:42 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The Panasonic PV-V4623S has a unique feature rarely found on VCRs. After it records a program, it rewinds the tape, scans through the tape at high speed, and "marks" the commercials. Then, when you play back the recorded tape, it automatically skips the commercials! This feature does not work perfectly, but it catches at least 80% of the commercials, and that's a great feature. I like this feature so much that I bought a second PV-V4623S as a backup, for about $35. I don't record all that much TV programming, so this setup works fine for me. It also allows me to watch the VHS tapes I have accumulated over the years - about 140, half pre-recorded, half off the air. When TV broadcasts go all-digital next year, I plan to buy a DVR.

do they still sell this

My JCR VCR died - it was a good one with flying erase head, etc.
Only need a slave machine right now.
Do you know if the Panasonic is still available or can you recommend something good.
I have a DVR - my son bought it and I sure wish he had bought me a combo. Especially now that my VCR died!

Hooking the Panasonic PV-V4623S VCR

by genegold - 12/15/08 10:17 PM In reply to: I'm still using my Panasonic PV-V4623S VCR, Here's why. by DFN23

I'm also still using a Panasonic PV-V4623S VCR and have a question about using it with an HDTV and cable. Currently, I have digital cable and the VCR is between the (Bresnan) cable box and analog (Sharp) TV, using the antenna style plugs. It doesn't control the TV, in fact it's only on when recording or playing, but I'm able to record the station the TV is on, which is not perfect but gets by. Now I'm close to buying an (LCD) HDTV and have a few choices, one of which is to keep the VCR and adding a lower cost DVD player (and maybe recorder); user reviews of the DVD/VCR combo units, at least with tuner, are not very enthusiastic.

So, what I'm writing to ask is if and how I could hook up the Panasonic to the HDTV. Would some kind of converter box be needed? That would probably push me toward another solution. Thanks.

I use a Hi-Def DVR with Time-Warner Cable

by ny2nv - 3/8/08 5:41 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Best money I’ve spent, the service works great. I particularly like setting it up to record a series of scheduled recordings. It’s nice knowing I won’t miss a particular program and they’re in Hi-Def. I use it in conjunction with NetFlix.
FYI: the Time-Warner remote also controls my sets aspect ratio [1080i].
No more VHS tapes.

Use Vista Home premium

by trailhiker - 3/8/08 6:03 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I was surprised at the capability of Vista Home Premium to record TV programs. I can record 2 programs at the same time, one from basic cable and the other from an HD antenna. At the same time I can play back another program. I have an XBOX 360 that enables me to play back the programs on my Samsung HD TV with complete remote control. I can also play back another program on my PC with a separate remote control. Vista includes a free program to write recorded programs to DVD. You can edit the programs first with another free program if you choose.

My PC is a PowerSpec E320 from Microcenter. It uses a Hauppauge HVR-1600 tuner with 3 inputs, one for analog cable, another for an antenna, and another for FM radio. I can listen to local FM stations but not record them. I can record HD programs and store them on DVD. The program guide is free and functions similar to TIVO. I believe it uses the same source as the descriptions are exactly the same. The functions are similar to TIVO although there are differences, most of which are minor.

? Regarding Hauppage HVR 1600

by budzuski - 3/15/08 11:34 AM In reply to: Use Vista Home premium by trailhiker

I have a HVR 1600 PCI card (model 1178)installed on my computer and and it only has 2 inputs ATSC and NTSC built in, NO FM Tuner. Hows it you say you get FM radio with this card?

I don't

by thebug - 3/8/08 7:10 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Don't have time to watch them anyway. Working on computers for a spare time job and have a full time job to, so I really have no time to watch much tv. Haven't watched a movie for many months. Not enough hours in the day!!

Recording TV w/ stand-alone DVR w/ hard-drive

by Manfred Schwermann - 3/8/08 7:36 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am using a Toshiba RD-XS52SU, which has a DVD-Ram and DVD- recorder/player which also has a 160G hard drive. Purchased from Vann's about 2 years ago for around $490. Although quite complicated to operate (I keep the owner's manual by my chair at all times), it does a good job of recording TV shows both on disk and hard drive. By having both, it is possible to record back and forth between the two any number of times, and enables a person to edit content, ie: eliminate commercials, etc. Big drawback is that many movies are copy protected. (All HBO, Max, and others) However, they can be copied once to DVD-Ram disks. (Cost $4-$5) Those not copy-protected can be put on DVD- disks. (20 - 50 cents each) The unit has 3 component input jacks, so it would be possible to hook up to a VCR and record tape to disk. Also, a HDMI output, and a digital optical audio jack. I don't know if this or a similar model is still available. I've been quite satisfied with its performance and capabilities and would try to replace it if that were necessary.

DVR built into my cable box

by tptjr - 3/8/08 7:40 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It does cost $7 a month but the simplicity and convenience to me are well worth it. You just click on a show to record, even 2 shows at once. I have an HDTV so recording in HD is great too. I hardly ever watch live tv because skipping through commercials is so cool. If you've never had a DVR you're missing half the fun of watching tv.

Dish Network DVR

by hughrider - 3/8/08 8:53 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The very best recorder is the Dish Network VIP 622 DVR. It allows both SD and HD recording. You can even record 2 programs off this DVR when you are watching a recorded program. You can skip through all the commercials or back up. Or stop-action live broadcast and backup to see slow-motion action. It is so easy to use. And it has much more flexiblity what I explained.

I don’t record no stinkin’ TV programs.

by lawli56 - 3/8/08 9:04 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you record your favorite TV programs? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

With so many repeats and omnibus editions, plus Catch Up TV on Virginmedia who needs to record? I have better things to do with my precious time than spend it slouched on the couch, monging out in front of a TV 24/7. :)

I may get around to getting a DVR at some point, but its not imminent.
