A few questions for PSP owners

by treemen - 2/25/08 5:01 PM

Alright, this summer I'm thinking of finally getting a PSP and need some help. First, can an iTunes music file play on the PSP. Thats where all my music is, so that would play a small factor(Already own an IPOD, but it would be nice if it can). Next, is any extra software required to transfer pictures, etc onto the PSP. And what is a good size memory chip?? Do the games save to the chip. I think I'll be getting the Silver Daxter bundle, but trying to cut some price corners, so looking at the $169 one. Any idea what is the better deal. I'm going to buy Battlefront 2, and Ace Combat X, but thats about all for know. Thanks alot!!

I'm pretty sure you CAN'T use iTunes files on the PSP. At least not without some legally questionable tinkering to the file to remove the DRM. DRM free files should play fine, but you MAY have to convert them to MP3 or WMA. I really only use my PSP for games, so I don't pay a lot of attention to the music/movie/photo functions.

As for the memory card... That all depends on what you want to do with it. Any music/movie/photo files you want to use with your PSP will have to be stored on that card, and yes, games will also save to it, so be sure to leave 10-15MB free for that. You just want to be sure NOT to buy your memory card off ebay. Go through some reputable place like Amazon or NewEgg. There's a lot of "fake" memory cards out there that are either very slow or don't really work at all, and ebay is the primary distribution channel for those.

I would also suggest looking into "grips" for the PSP. Unless you have rather small hands, you'll find your hands cramp up with extended use of the PSP. You can decide if you want one that also includes a small battery pack to extend out the life or not. Another thing I would suggest is some kind of high quality screen protector. Hori products are usually considered to be about as good as it gets. Again, you have to be wary of fakes that aren't quite the same quality. I know I found some Hori screen protectors for my DS at the local Target, so that might be a place to start.

You don't need software to transfer pictures and music mp3s (just drag and drop them to your PSP. Videos don't work the same way, you need a converter to add videos to your PSP. I've heard PSP Video 9 works well, but I haven't had luck with that...

I just bought the Daxter bundle a week ago. I would definitely buy the bundled package. Even if you don't like the Family Guy UMD or the Daxter game, it's worth it for the 1GB stick alone. I haven't had a chance to move pics, videos, or music on mine yet but I don't think you NEED special software, it might just make it easier because I believe the files need to be in certain folders within the memory stick in order for the PDP to access them correctly (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Not quite that simple

It's not quite that simple, at least with video files. The PSP only supports certain codecs, and even then, the amount of processing power and RAM limit the resolution it can decode with acceptable playback speeds. To put files onto the PSP, you don't need any special software. Just a USB cable or a memory card reader.

While I'll admit the PSP makes for a half-decent portable photo viewer, it's horrible as an MP3 player or video player. It's only marginally better than nothing if you're stuck somewhere... But Sony really over engineered the PSP. It's not bad as a portable game system, it rocks as a portable emulator system, but most everything else the PSP is supposed to be able to do, something else will usually do it 10X better at least.
