I downloaded updates for my firewall, COMODO, and spyware scanning programs: spybot search and destroy & lavasoft ad aware. All of the programs are the latest versions. After downloading, I had to run programs as administrator because they would not work normally. I couldn't restart my computer without going into task manager, and when it started back up, nothing would work. Any program I tried to click on said "this program cannot receive messages right now."
I'm running windows vista on a dell inspiron e1505, 2ghz core 2 duo processors, and 4g ram. I bought it new about a year ago, and had spybot & ad aware downloaded and running just fine since then. I redownloaded the newer versions of both of those programs about a month ago, along with COMODO firewall, which had been running fine too. Any ideas?
After spending many hours searching the net and trying many special scans and fixes I found the cause. Spybot created a very large HOSTS file. After eliminating all the added entries, leaving the default one, and setting cns service to disable, all the 100% lockup went away. This applied to both my desktop and laptop. Same solution worked on both.
Generally the 32bit max is 2GB and the 64bit 3 to 3.5 GB. Both the OS and MOBO requierments should be considered. And generally the lower max is appropriate.
My firewall, COMODO somehow locked everything, and after it was uninstalled, my computer ran like new! Strange how it did that, it worked fine before, but I'll shoot an email to them and let them know.
