Been using SP3 RC (not really sure of which RC version) for several weeks now. Have absolutely no issues that I am aware of with this update. Now that I have it installed, and the final version will be delivered through Microsoft update, I wonder if I need to uninstall it so it will not interfere with the installation of the final version, or will the update take care of that?
I had Vista SP1 RC installed and I CANNOT report "no issues" with that one. I had to uninstall it to get my computer back to what had been normal.
I did the update from SP2 to SP3 and had some problems. After I did the update I started to get error codes from my Windows Live Messenger. I email Microsoft and they told me that my Messenger may have gotten corrupted after the upgrade. They told me to unintall Windows Live Messenger. I did what they told me to do and had to reinstall it. Now everything works OK now. I recived very good support from Microsoft.
After updating to SP3 I found I could not close IE7 pages - often it would take four or five minutes of cycling the task manager to finally close the window - The content would be blanked (white window) but the window would not close - At first I thought I would have to reboot, which I did as a hard reboot (cannot reboot if a window is hung) This is actually getting better however (sort of an Elmer Gantry HEAL Sinner sort of deal) Any ideas?
After updating to SP3, prior to the public release, my system went haywire. It took two full days to recover my files (then having each in duplicate), folders, internet capability, everything! Another month of hard reboot from frozen screens, Internet Explorer becoming non-responsive, the resolution on my screen going wild (still a problem I've learned to live with until I have the patience to find the answer - instead of the whole game with changing it back). But other than this, all has been a piece of cake. Arggggggg!
After installing Sp3, I could no longer connect to the internet. I use Verizon dsl. I uninstalled it (back to Sp2) and got back internet access, except that the network icon was no longer in the Tray.
Installed Sp3 a second time - same result. I'm back with sp2.
Got my Internet working with Sp3 .. did a clean instal of Sp2 before updating it with Sp3. Then added back all my apps. Only downside is IE 6 would sometimes throw an error. I updated to IE 7, which I don't really care for, and the errors stopped.
Everytime I try to install the update Candidate 2 sp3, my comp seems to get stuck in some wierd loop. After installing update, I get msg that says "access is denied". What the heck is that supposed to mean. Then I have to cancel the install, it rolls back and Microsft Update shows failed install. but then i keep getting an automated update message telling me to install (which doesn't work) and end up back where I started. How do I get rid of the auto update icon in my systray? How do I make this update work? Help!!! (computer newbie)
These guys mat not be up and ready yet to deal with Service Pack 3 issues but they are worth a try. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com
If you have the yellow shield in your system tray...double click it, choose Custom Install, uncheck the SP3 and click OK. It will ask you to confirm not to be shown the update again.
That should fix the yellow shield prompting you to install SP3. ![]()
I installed SP3 and my computer stopped completely after download. I went to safe made and did system recovery back to BEFORE the download and everything is fine. I will NOT download the SP3 again. The SP2 was working fine...I don't know what I was thinking, or should I say NOT THINKING. If it ain't broke, why fix it. I constantly use Zone Alarm and back up EVERYTHING. I delete files, cookies and everything else not needed and defrag once or twice a month. Never had any problem until the SP3 download from Microsoft. Glad it is working for others.

I think in all it took about 2 hours, but it installed fine it gave me no trouble and it has made a few slow starting apps start up quicker.
i have had sp3 for a couple of months and every once in a while i get a shutdown background message, it has happend usually once every 2 weeks. any i deas on what is causing this? it started to happen after i loaded sp3 on my computer.
If you have had it for a couple of months it was probably a beta version, and you should be updating new beta versions as soon as they become available. When did you do your last install?
You may have the Office Service Pack 3 rather than the Windows XP service pack 3.
Have you gone to Microsoft to search their Knowledge Base.
I just did the download last week - I waited until MS notified me of the correct version before downloading and installing.
I have a few problems with other programs but they seem to be self resolving. Go figure.
