I read a post a couple years ago where Grif Thomas answered a post from someone asking about manually deleting temp files, etc. as part of performing a periodic PC maintenance routine. I believe it was for an earlier version of Windows - Windows 95, I think. You posted one of the best procedures I have ever read and also provided a page that included a procedure from TONI that included tips for deleting CHK and TMP files, along with several different file types. I regularly referred to this procedure and feel totally lost without it. My PC permanently died and I lost this info. Even though I have Windows Vista on my new PC, I would be forever grateful if you could provide me with this procedure link, if it all possible. It appeared to be a regular link to a previous post, so I think it was one you provided regularly to similar questions. Can you help me? I have searched your archive several times over the past couple of years, but to no avail. If you don't have it, is there a way I can contact Toni?
to the trash?
you may use 3rd party program to completly delete this files.
Why do this chore manually? Privacy Mantra does a good job at a click of your mouse (two clicks, really).
Advanced Disk Cleaner
By Innovative Solutions
Every day the programs on your computer create temporary and garbage files and leave them behind on your hard disk. These files build up over time, taking up valuable hard disk space and slowing your system down. Advanced Disk Cleaner is a free program, which makes it easy to quickly find and wipe away all the garbage files on your computer. It scans your disks quickly and then displays the garbage files so you can decide which of them you want removed. The program accurately detects and identifies only the garbage files. In the options dialog you can add or modify the folders and file types to clean, as well as the ones you want to be excluded from the search. You can also choose between several methods of deleting files or moving to a special folder or simple deletion. After using Advanced Disk Cleaner you will have more disk space at your disposal so you can install more programs, have more MP3 music files. Version 5 adds support for Windows Vista.

By the way, most of those instruction links can be found in the "Tips for Computer Newbies" sticky thread at the top of the forum, including some from Toni.
Hope this helps.

Kantons,
Click start, then run, in the run box type "%temp%" ( without the quotes. Then hit enter.
when the window opens, click edit then select all, then click the big red X at the top. Answer yes to delete them all!
There is something else to do, click start & run again, this time type Prefetch in the run box & hit enter, when the window opens click edit, select all, & hit enter again. then answer yes to delete them all.
Hope this helps,
Rich
there ends up being folders in this list. Is it okay to delete these folders and will the programs then just crate new temp folders as they need them?
Although Windows should re-create any Temp folders if you delete them, that may not be the case.
I would always err on the side of caution when considering deleting folders. Firstly I would look inside each folder to see what is stored there. You might find that these folders have been created by other software and are not necessarily temp folders, and they may hold critical files.
Even if they do not, and only hold temp files that can be deleted, I would hold off deleting the folder itself until you can do more research.

Also, some newly installed programs use a temp folder to store part of their executable functions upon re-boot. Sometimes there are leftovers, but you can create a batch file that will safely remove the "contents" of these folders without deleting the folder itself. Don't remember where I saw this but if you open up notepad and type in "del /s /q "C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxx\Local Settings\Temp\*.*" " (without the leading and trailing quotes and substituting your documents folder name for the x's) then save that file as deltemp.bat onto your desktop. Once created drag that file to your startup folder. Then upon every reboot, the program will run clearing out the contents of the temp folders.
Most users use Crap Cleaner from DownLoad.com
Why are my Custom Files and Folders are not being cleaned?
Once you've selected the Custom Files and Folders to be cleaned in the options screen, you need to enable it by selecting the "Custom Files and Folders" option under the Windows Tab -> Advanced.

The easiest and quickest way I know is: Right click on START, left click on SEARCH, type *.tmp in the field "all or part of the file name", Left click on the down arrow next to the field for "look in" and left click on the location you want to search in and then left click on SEARCH. Wait foe the list to come back and then left click on the first file name once, scroll down to the bottom of the list, hold down the SHIFT key and then also left click once on the last filename once. All the files will be highlighted and you can now either press the DELETE key or left click on FILE and then left click on DELETE. Answer YES when prompted. The files will now be in the RECYCLE BIN from where tou can then permanently delete thenm by emptying the recycle bin.
