by mollywood - 2/28/08 12:05 PM

Email us at buzz@cnet.com, and we'll try to come up with some ideas. Can't speak for those two!

Q: Lost streaming

by jacobshm - 2/28/08 12:03 PM

Molly is a lot dweeb? Well than you can watch all the seasons in HD for free at: http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing

Huh?

Does Aaron count as one?

Q: How many emails...

by Doug Hammond - 2/28/08 12:01 PM

Do you sort through to find the best content for Mailbag?

A: Hmmm ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 12:04 PM

I think I'm getting 10 or 20 emails a day? Plus I go through all the CNET TV Feedback emails. That's why the fulltime producer is a lifesaver. :)

Q: Embed CNETTV video

by alex_smurf - 2/28/08 11:59 AM

Is there any possibility of embedding CNETTV video on my blog? I would like to embed The buzz report and Mailbag. Thanks

Alex

A: I believe ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 12:03 PM

that we are working on that. Stay tuned.

Q: My question was too long or too repeatedly asked...

by gomer43 - 2/28/08 11:59 AM

So maybe I'll shorten it and try again. ;)

Any advice for people who are trying to break into podcasting, but are having trouble getting good exposure? Seems having high-profile guests like you or Tom would be good, but how to do that as a small-time person? If it's on tech, how are newer writers/podcasters supposed to review stuff if no one sends us anything?

A: Phew, thank you

by mollywood - 2/28/08 12:03 PM

I was hoping for a shorter version. The best advice I can give is to relentlessly self-promote, get linked to in as many places as you can to improve your SEO, and yeah, get somebody "famous" to come on your show. :) As for the review units, you'll DEFINITELY have to buy them for a while. You can imagine how many requests those mfctrs get for review units!!! It's a tough business, no doubt, but it CAN be done!

Q: Molly's Computer

by MarlosC. - 2/28/08 11:57 AM

hmn looking at your profile, I noticed your computer configuration [Home: Mac Mini with SuperDrive (for now). Work: Compaq Evo, 2GHz P4, 512MB RAM, stock components of the corporate variety. It's sad, really]. It isn't quite what I had imaged! I thought you had got a super powerful one hehe. That's very curious! why that molly?

A: Corporate computers ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 12:01 PM

Are NEVER all that. But mostly, I need to upgrade that list. I still have the Mac Mini but added a Dell XPS M1210, and just got upgraded to a pretty hawt ThinkPad T61 at work.

Q: BOL on the road?

by Hacim - 2/28/08 11:57 AM

Why should the Diggnation guys have all the fun? Any chance of a live event BOL? (I know, I know $$$)

A: Honestly ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 12:01 PM

Live event BOLs we can do, but for serious, the real problem with a tour is that we do so much OTHER content besides BOL! For each week we're gone, that'd be no Top 5, no Buzz Report, no Real Deal, no Gadgettes, no Mailbag, and no Insider's Secret/Quick Tip. We'd grind CNET TV to a halt!

Q: (NT) Carrot Cake or Cucumber Cake That is the real question!!?!

by jdtennis202 - 2/28/08 11:57 AM

A: Ew

by mollywood - 2/28/08 12:00 PM

Cucumber cake? Is that a real thing?

Q: Live audio vs live video.

by alvin.c - 2/28/08 11:57 AM

I love having BOL live, being able to chat and hitting sites as you bring them up. The video's okay but I don't think necessary. Being a live participant is what's exciting. Do you think you can at least keep the audio/chat going? and maybe expand to gadgettes? That'd be cool.

A: Good idea!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:59 AM

I'll suggest that to Tom and Jason

Q: Other podcasts

by rafacst - 2/28/08 11:56 AM

Do you have time to listem/view other podcasts not from CNet? What are they?

A: It sounds terrible ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:59 AM

but I hardly ever do consume other podcasts. Except the Onion Radio News and the Lost podcasts, but even then, only sometimes. It's a lot worse since the baby came along. :)

Q: Future of Podcass

by rosscbrown - 2/28/08 11:56 AM

CNET seems to bee adding more and more podcasts, almost as fast as advertisers are pulling out. Now with CNET TV, where is the future of podcasting leading?

Also, is Tom nice to work with? Does he buy everyone in the office cookies for no reason?

A: Tom and the cookies

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:58 AM

I wish. ;) Actually, Tom often gives presents. He gave me a "How to Spot a Cylon" poster for my office for Christmas. He's a very good guy and I do enjoy arguing with him.

Q: Back from Iraq

by fhritz - 2/28/08 11:56 AM

Just finished my last tour of duty in Iraq. Wanted to than all of the CNET family for keeping us sane. You all are terrific! Any talk of taking BOL on a national tour? Capt. Paul

A: Welcome back!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:57 AM

You're welcome, and thank you right back. Glad you made it home safe. We've definitely talked about a national tour! We'd love to do it, our boss seems to object to the idea of "half the team being out of the office at the same time." We'll work on him, though ...

Q: Gadgettes Live?

by citizenzero - 2/28/08 11:54 AM

Has there ever been a live episode of Gadgettes? Would you consider doing one, possibly at a trade event like the BOL episodes from CES?

Extra points if you show the pinkwatch gadgets live on video and smash them if appropriate.

A: I'll take it under consideration ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:56 AM

We do record on the same day as CNET Live, so maybe we could just piggyback in there one day. ;)

Q: (NT) Actually.... Everyone kows you cuss like a trucker... but not literally like a trucker I think you said that on BOL once

by 987654321y - 2/28/08 11:54 AM

A: Dangit

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:55 AM

My secret is out.

Q: CNet's journalism style guide?

by TourismJim - 2/28/08 11:52 AM

Hey Molly, I've noticed that you occasionally impart the phrase "an historic," which is typically considered British (as they tend not to pronounce the "h"), or archaic in form. Obviously, using "an" in front of a word like "hour" (with a silent "h") is fine. I know that you're very conscious of grammar choice, so I'm wondering why the use of "an" in front of a vocalized "h"? Or is this what CNet dictates as part of their style guide?

A: It's just me

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:55 AM

I am a grammar nerd who also studied French, so I sometimes employ the "liaison" in English, too.

Q: Where did the BOL shirts go?

by Hacim - 2/28/08 11:52 AM

I got mine at the Snakes on a Plane premiere but there have been precious few given out since then. What's up with that?

A: Oy, tell me about it

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:54 AM

We're working on it. $$$$

Q: honestly, wasn't being sarcastic on "Inside the Labs"

by faddahyuetsu - 2/28/08 11:51 AM

Hyperbole, yes. Sarcastic, no. I really am enthusiastic about you doing a show like that.

A: Ok, phew

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:54 AM

It wouldn't be QUITE as bland as you described, but our testing procedures are actually pretty cool!

Q: Live?

by joncahill14 - 2/28/08 11:51 AM

Does the fact that you are streaming the show on Yahoo Live change the way you approach BOL? Ya know, accidental bad word slips and what not.

A: Yup.

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:53 AM

Little-known fact: Molly cusses like a trucker IRL.

Q: (NT) Coolest celeb you've met through this job?

by sentinel23 - 2/28/08 11:50 AM

A: Tie: Madeleine Albright and Jonathan Coulton

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:53 AM

That guy was so cool.

Q: Yahoo & Beta & Cnet

by Son of Orac - 2/28/08 11:48 AM

Yahoo Live particularly. Do you think that going live with something that is plainly not ready perhaps undermines rather than promotes a concept?

Perhaps BOL shares some of the egg on the chin for Yahoo Live failing... when no need to?

Wow! I sound serious!

er! wibble.

Son Of Orac.

A: Wow, you do!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:52 AM

In this case, our live streaming efforts are kind of a Tom-Molly-Jason skunkworks project. I hope we're not promoting or killing Yahoo Live. We just didn't want to have to bug the camera guys and set up a huge CNET Live set in there. ;)

Q: People want to be on C|Net, how about submitting video mails

by lahall_us - 2/28/08 11:47 AM

Other shows have aired select user-submitted video emails. ZDTV even gave away webcams - but those were crazy times. Maybe we could see Alex from Miami, Doppelganger Tom, or Dave the Patent Attorney.

Oh wait, BOL is an AUDIO podcast. C|Net should fix that.

How about a You Tube contest where we submit videos and you give a C|Net mug to the winner (with a pound of Ethiopian Super Natural!)

A: Those CNET mugs ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:51 AM

Are more tightly controlled than radioactive waste. I think I'm not even supposed to really HAVE the one I have ... ;)

Q: well actually, it's...

by kwahhn - 2/28/08 11:47 AM

car-tech-padawan-in-training

A: (NT) Right. Durr. :)

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:50 AM

Q: Inside the labs FTW

by 987654321y - 2/28/08 11:46 AM

Yea Inside the labs! In fact you should start turning C|NET inside out and start the behind the scenes on everything like.

A: I think we're getting there!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:50 AM

Navel-gazing FTW!

Q: DEFINITELY interested in a molly "Inside The Labs"

by faddahyuetsu - 2/28/08 11:45 AM

i'd love it! wanna see real benchmarks performed! live! i wanna see bar graph times in a chart chiron overlay on the screen, man!

A: Somehow ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:50 AM

I think you might be a little sarcastic ... ;)

Q: Killer App

by n74jw - 2/28/08 11:44 AM

Hello - What would be the most incredible, important, favorite application that you have used in the last year...

Thx

A: This is nerdy ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:48 AM

but honestly, the coolest app I have come across in the past year has got to be Synergy, the open-source app that lets you control two computers using one keyboard/mouse? I use it on my laptop to control my Media Center PC, even works across Mac/PC. It's like magic. That is SUPER dorky, isn't it?

Q: Buzz Report

by MarlosC. - 2/28/08 11:42 AM

Hi Molly, love your funny style in the Buzz Report and Mailbag shows. How did the idea of creating a show that mixed humor with tech come up?

A: Thank you!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:47 AM

It was mostly the idea of our executive producer, Mark Larkin. He thought, in a nutshell, that I often made funny comments about tech stuff in these morning editorial meetings I used to go to, and he thought it would make a good show! (Thanks, Mark!) Then, Mailbag was so easy -- the mail we get here is amazing!

Q: molly's dream assignment?

by faddahyuetsu - 2/28/08 11:41 AM

so ok, we've made suggestions, but what would be your dream assignment on CNET? what is the one thing on BOL or the other shows you would love to do and haven't done yet. pretend cooley got drunk and accidentally gave you access to the big expense account.

A: Car tech!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:46 AM

I've been trying to get inside those cars for years now, I can't believe Cooley's letting me do some. :) That's the one beat I would LOVE to steal, but Cooley is a master at it, so I'll settle for being his little car-tech-jedi-in-training.

Q: (NT) Is a general knowledge of tech better for working at CNET or is hyper-specialization more valid?

by al409 - 2/28/08 11:40 AM

A: Probably specialization?

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:45 AM

It's good to have a general knowledge, but if you want to be a reviewer or news reporter, you will have to have a beat, so it's good if, say, we need a laptops expert and you happen to be one. But general tech passion will let you learn a specialty, so maybe that's the way to go after all ...

Q: Operating Systems?

by 987654321y - 2/28/08 11:37 AM

How are operating systems reviewed, I remember microsoft was trying to bribe people for good reviews by sending them bloted acer Ferrarri laptops and Windows Vista Ultimate.

How are OS reviews usually done though?

A: Oh, yeah, the blogger thing

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:43 AM

We were not on the Acer Ferrarri laptop list, although it's not unusual for MS or Apple to send a souped-up review computer with the OS preinstalled for us to "test." Apple, especially, in the old days. But we usually get a disc from Microsoft or Apple and install it on various test machines and benchmark it that way. We lab-test pretty much everything we review in some way or another. I'm considering a new show, actually, Inside the Labs or something like that. Sound interesting?

Q: Your Tech Heritage

by joncahill14 - 2/28/08 11:36 AM

Did you consider yourself super tech forward before you started working in the industry or was it something that came with moving to the Bay Area and working in the business?

A: The biz

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:41 AM

I was always interested in technology, but I wouldn't have said I was geeky before I got schooled at MacHome Journal. I'm still not geeky like Tom's geeky -- he's a "build your own computer" geek, and I'm a "that gadget is awesome" and "business tech news" geek.

Q: Zune and Cnet.

by jssshashi - 2/28/08 11:36 AM

I just wish the Video podcasts that come from cnet are 320x240, WMV files.. It would save a buch of time on conversion. My video podcast list is mostly Cnet stuff downloaded from zune market place...

You have a high rank there...

A: Yeah, it's mostly cost right now

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:40 AM

We'd have to double our storage costs to start encoding for downloads in multiple formats. But believe me, we hear you. I keep bringing it up, and I think we'll get there. I have a Zune now, so I feel your pain! Good to know about the Marketplace rating.

Q: Nagging little question...

by UnixOnMac - 2/28/08 11:35 AM

So why is Brian Cooley called "Editor-at-Large"? Is it because he is so good they can't give him a specialty? Or does he not like to be chained to a specific area?

A: I think it's that he's been here forever

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:39 AM

Editor-At-Large is a rare title at CNET (Rafe Needleman has it, too). It pretty much means you're past Executive Editor, not Editor-in-Chief, but still really, really awesome. ;)

Q: so if how does one get noticed & picked up by cnet?

by faddahyuetsu - 2/28/08 11:35 AM

... and all the other similar questions like others here about how can we, like you, have the dream job at CNET? what does it take to get noticed & make the cut? maybe there should be a "CNET Idol" show like "American Idol," and you, tom & jason could be the judges. tho' i am *not* in any way comparing you to paula abdul (gak!).

also, Yoshi0683 should go ahead and light his hair on fire and punch himself in the face for saying that about Dan A.

lub da show. 'n' awll dat.

A: Dude, CNET Idol ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:38 AM

I think I love it. :)

Q: I've learned English hearing you

by okelococnet - 2/28/08 11:34 AM

Hi Molly, I live in Curicó, Chile (South America) so we all speak Spanish only. I love technology and gadgets so I started watching CNET videos about 1 year ago. Believe me, I've learned A LOT about diverse topics, and now I'm subscribed to BOL and I love it. 2 months ago I attended the TOEIC English test and I got 945 points out of 990; I think it's pretty good for a 16 year old guy like me.

THANK YOU for creating this great content and making available for everyone in the world.

Marcelo

A: That is awesome!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:38 AM

Thank YOU, actually! That's so cool!! Well done!

Q: what do you guys use....

by ltsiver - 2/28/08 11:33 AM

What software do you guys use to edit your podcasts? (audio and video?)

A: Actually? Audacity

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:37 AM

For audio, and we're mostly a Final Cut Pro shop for video. Occasionally AVID.

Q: Something Molly would like:

by zefyr66 - 2/28/08 11:33 AM

an Aaron Sorkin "Sports Night" style CNET Live would be "the Awesome!"

A: LOVE it!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:37 AM

Especially a Cooley-Tom-walking-down-the-hallway-talking-really-fast shot. :)

Q: (NT) RE: LCD OR PLASMA

by jdtennis202 - 2/28/08 11:33 AM

When I do gt that 40 incher, would it be better to go plasma or LCD??????

A: I vote LCD

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:37 AM

More energy-efficient.

Q: Average Day at CNET

by tango_fox1 - 2/28/08 11:32 AM

What's the average Day at CNET like? Is it like work, work or is it boring one minute thrill ride the next?

A: It's RUNNING!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:36 AM

It depends on the day; we produce a LOT of content, so our team is usually on the run. Today, for example, I did a car tech shoot from 8-10, BOL 10-11, this chat 11-12, Gadgettes 1-2, and another car tech 2:30 - 4:30. It's like that for most of us. Definitely not boring.

Q: iPhone 2

by surfpark - 2/28/08 11:32 AM

Have you decided if you're going to get the iPhone 2 when its "supposedly" set to release later this year?

A: I have to see it first

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:35 AM

but it's sounding pretty great! I'm not going to buy anything else until it comes out, let me put it that way.

Q: Gadgets..

by jssshashi - 2/28/08 11:32 AM

So after the review.. the gadgets are taken away from you? or who ever reviews the gadget, it is his/her?

A: Yep, we have to send everything back

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:35 AM

We usually get "review units" from the companies, on loan. We do the review, and then we have to send everything back within a few weeks. Once in a while, usually if a company is being difficult, ;), we will buy the product ourselves, and then we keep it and use it for testing or videos and the like. We get to PLAY with gadgets, which is great, but we never get to keep them.

Q: Excutive?

by 987654321y - 2/28/08 11:31 AM

How did you get the Excecutive Evitor Title?

A: I started out an as Associate ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:33 AM

and I just went on from there. :)

Q: Studio lighting or camera change?

by TourismJim - 2/28/08 11:30 AM

Within the last month or so, I've noticed that Buzz Report and the TivoCast (along with some other shows) appear to have the appearance of being shot with fluorescent lighting - a cooler (color temp), crisper appearance. It also similar to what I see in using video (30 fps) rather than film (24 fps). Did you guys recently change your lighting and/or camera equipment?

A: We are upgrading, yeah

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:33 AM

Impressive that you noticed! We've been slowly bringing in more lights and newer cameras (we're preparing to jump to HD sometime in the hopefully near future!).

Q: Buzz Report

by joncahill14 - 2/28/08 11:29 AM

How much prep time (writing, production, etc) goes into an episode of Buzz Report? And how many people are we talking here?

A: We're getting more people

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:32 AM

Until recently, the Buzz Report was pretty much a Molly Production, and I still do ALL the writing. But I got a fulltime producer, and we usually start discussing stories Monday, I write and we meet about the script on Tuesday afternoon, and then we shoot on Wednesday and edit for post by midday Thursday. It's a tight turnaround, and a total shoot involves maybe four people.

Q: it would be so totally awesome

by chrisemcleod - 2/28/08 11:27 AM

to like hear one whole gadgettes in like total valley girl! Like that would fer sher be so totally cool. you and kelly like seriously do a totally awesome valley girl!

(seriously, its very funny!)

A: You wouldn't be able to take it ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:31 AM

but maybe we'll give ya 5 minutes or so one of these days. :)

Q: The ultimate question

by Yoshi0683 - 2/28/08 11:26 AM

How can someone with a bad voice get a job doing video reviews at Cnet? and yes I am referring to Dan A. Don't you think he sounds a bit foolish when he opens his mouth? I mean honestly I felt like lighting my hair on fire and punching myself in the face.

A: Sorry ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:30 AM

but I love Dan. He's hilarious.

Q: The ultimate phone

by Y0-Y0 - 2/28/08 11:24 AM

Why don't the wireless telcos give us a phone with all the bells and whistles we want? Will the open source phone OS change this?

A: Openness will help

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:30 AM

They haven't done it in the past because they've wanted to control content/services (and also because the phones would cost way more than we'd want to spend and it's really hard to make a phone that does it all but is still reliable). But yeah, openness, better interfaces, and touchscreens will enable some AWESOME future devices.

Q: (NT) Also: Can I be hired as a member of CNET-News.com/Reviews- Gaming Squad? (lol)

by al409 - 2/28/08 11:24 AM

A: (NT) Maybe if you send enough corrections ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:29 AM

Q: Future Technology

by surfpark - 2/28/08 11:22 AM

Out of all the sci-fi and futuristic technology seen in movies, which do you want the most? I want a hoverboard or flying car!

A: Nanotech

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:28 AM

It's terrifying, but there's SO much potential there, from, like, food creation (solve hunger, solve the "meat problem") to machinery to health care. I think nanotech could be the transforming technology of our lifetimes. Bring on the Singularity!

Q: (NT) How do you build career portfolio experience early?

by al409 - 2/28/08 11:22 AM

A: College!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:27 AM

If you're still in school, write for your college newspaper. It's clips, and every clip counts. Also, local AP bureaus often need stringers, so you can call them and volunteer your service if you've got some expertise or recently graduated. (I'm just assuming/hoping you mean journalism ...)

Q: I LOVE CNET

by jdtennis202 - 2/28/08 11:22 AM

I check CNET about 6x per day and love all the information you guys dish out. My parents think that I'm too "electronicky" but I really like looking at all the new gadgets!!! Thank you and keep up the good work CNET!!!!!!

A: THANK YOUI!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:25 AM

That's awesome to hear. :)

Q: Magnetic field

by rafacst - 2/28/08 11:21 AM

Did you literally break (not mess up with the settings) some device because of your magnetic field? Which one?

A: Heh, I don't think I've ever truly nuked anything ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:25 AM

but it's still early and there's a lot of tech out there ...

Q: Ideas for BOL

by zefyr66 - 2/28/08 11:20 AM

Sometimes I get ideas (usually a link to a story) for the show but Im never sure if I should email, post on forum, or leave a message. Which avenues are best for different types of communication?

A: Email or forum for links

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:24 AM

For sure, we're trying to get better about grabbing forum posts. Email = most reliable. And thanks, we love when you guys send links!

Q: Feeds

by jacobshm - 2/28/08 11:20 AM

Hi Molly
I had the same thing only usin iTunes

A: Oh, no!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:24 AM

Hmmm. Ok, then. I'll file a bug today. Bad news.

Q: Show Prep

by joncahill14 - 2/28/08 11:19 AM

Can you walk us quickly through your daily morning BOL show prep?

A: Sure, here goes

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:23 AM

We start tagging stories in deli.cio.us along with our morning coffee, and then we get together in Tom's office at 9:30. Jason spends the morning paring down the voicemail collection and then we start by listening to what he's picked out and choosing a few. Then we compare our story tags and decide which ones we want to talk about (minor arguing may occur here). Then we choose a few emails, put it all into a lineup and email it around (we make print copies, too). Then head to the studio at 10, try to get the darned live streaming working, and record the show! That's pretty much it, it's not very complicated (other than the live streaming).

Q: Though- there are glitches even in serious gaming podcasts.

by al409 - 2/28/08 11:19 AM

It kind of confuses me: aren't you all news a holics?

A: (NT) It's hard to know everything?

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:21 AM

Q: Career Advice?

by citizenzero - 2/28/08 11:19 AM

So how do you become a tech reviewer and beloved podcast host for CNET? What did you study to prepare for this job? How can I be down?

A: Journalism!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:21 AM

Most of the editors who work here (though not all) have some journalism or communications background. Journalism + passion, pretty much! Oh, and it'll help to live in SF or NY.

Q: No "Loaded" or "QuickCasts" on CNetTV Mobile?

by TourismJim - 2/28/08 11:17 AM

I love using iphone.cnet.com on my iPod touch, but noticed that some of your great shows are *never* included in the CNetTV section (Loaded, Quickcasts). Why is that? (and why the over-representation of the auto segments?)

A: Really?

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:20 AM

Ok, I'll let the iPhone developer know. I think it's just an oversight! Car Tech segments are what we call "double-mapped" to CNET TV and Reviews, so they might show up twice? I'll check it out.

Q: errors with podcast feeds

by filmn - 2/28/08 11:17 AM

I've had some errors with some of the podcast feeds, one being Loaded: somehow car tech got mixed up in it and I got about 10 episodes of car tech.

A: Yes, we're working on it

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:19 AM

Are you using Google Reader? We think it might be a problem with Reader; I address it in this week's Mailbag.

Q: Molly on Car Tech?

by lahall_us - 2/28/08 11:16 AM

I can see that X3 is going to get kicked to the curb real soon!

What Car Tech do you like/don't like (iDrive, Ford Sync.) Glad to see you connecting with another of my favorite types of machines.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

A: I know, it's perfect timing

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:18 AM

Now I get to test-drive all these sweet new rides! I have to say, I would LOVE to have Ford Sync, that is great technology. The Acura tech package is pretty good, but Sync trumps all. I do think that in-car GPS nav is totally overrated and overpriced compared to standalone units, at least right now.

Q: BOL on the road

by roberticomusic - 2/28/08 11:16 AM

Are you planning on doing live events like Diggnation or Twit? Or like Geekbrief, taking BOL on the road. If you ever come to Miami, I'm in.

A: We've talked about it ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:17 AM

... we just have to shake loose the money. But someday, we'd love to do it. Tom's a total evangelist for it, he'll get it done!

Q: (NT) How well does being a journalist and having a family mesh?

by al409 - 2/28/08 11:14 AM

A: Pretty well, if it's tech

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:16 AM

It's great to be a tech journalist, because being a hard news reporter meant I worked INSANE hours for the first years of my career (and every holiday and every weekend). Since I'm not in News.com, my coverage hours are much more normal (other than travel).

Q: This might seem strange but: Why do the other CNET properties mess up on gaming news so often?

by al409 - 2/28/08 11:12 AM

Though they aren't Gamespot, the errors come so often.
And yeah Meebo!

A: Which properties?

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:15 AM

Tell me, and I'll try to find out! I'm pretty nosy, and I don't like to hear that we're making errors ... like what?

Q: Your Hair

by EpidemiK - 2/28/08 11:10 AM

Why don't you let your hair grow out longer? You would look a lot nicer!

A: Uh, mean?

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:14 AM

I like it short. But thanks.

Q: CNET Perks

by milotheamazing - 2/28/08 11:11 AM

Favorite perk of your job?

A: The gadgets, of course!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:13 AM

And this week, Brian Cooley's letting me do two car tech videos, and lemme tell you, driving those cars? Huge perk. Oh, and our soda machines only cost 25 cents.

Q: The real CNET mailman?

by CygnusTM - 2/28/08 11:10 AM

Is the guy in the opening of Mailbag the actual postal carrier for the CNET offices? If so, Awesome! If not, who is it?

A: Heh ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:13 AM

everyone wants to know who the mailman is! I think I should keep the answer a secret, what if I spoil it!?

Just kidding; he's a composite. But he's practically taken on a real personality!

Q: working as an editor

by ltsiver - 2/28/08 11:10 AM

When/how did you decide that you wanted to do this job you currently have? Obviously you enjoy your work a great deal, but why did you decide this line of work?

A: I got lucky!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:12 AM

I was in regular journalism until I moved to the Bay Area (mostly sports reporting), and I got hired by a Mac magazine when I moved here. From there, CNET, and tech passion! Woo!

Q: Favorite web app?

by surfpark - 2/28/08 11:10 AM

What is the most used web app at Cnet?

A: At all of CNET?

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:11 AM

Good question ... we're all on Facebook, but as far as Web apps, probably Meebo.

Q: Why No BOL live

by jacobshm - 2/28/08 11:08 AM

Hi Molly
How come you guys don't do BOL hosted by CNET like CNET live?

A: It's an audio podcast ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:10 AM

is the main reason, but we're actually investigating doing a video version once a week. TOP SECRET! ;)

Q: (NT) Peets or starbucks? ;-)

by chrisemcleod - 2/28/08 11:09 AM

A: Peets!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:10 AM

Unless Starbucks is closer ... ;)

Q: Cnet TV

by rafacst - 2/28/08 11:08 AM

Where else does the Cnet TV shows are broadcasted?

A: VOD galore!

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:09 AM

We're on video on demand on Cox, Insight, and Tivo. Plus, we do a show for G4 Tech TV in Canada, hosted by Tom.

Q: Yahoo Live

by pongratzt - 2/28/08 11:07 AM

What is the yahoo live URL BOL uses?

A: We go to ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:08 AM

http://live.yahoo.com/raygun01, which is Jason's feed. But there's bol.pb30.com, which is the feed for all three; think we're gonna try UStream next time. Can't take the null errors.

Q: (NT) Did you have anything to do with the I love Molly Wood shirt on shop.com

by ltdcs - 2/28/08 11:06 AM

A: I swear I didn't ...

by mollywood - 2/28/08 11:07 AM

I was pretty shocked, actually ... especially since you can also find an "I love Stephen Hawking" shirt on the same site. good company!

A: Welcome!

My question was too long or too repeatedly asked...

Live audio vs live video.
I love having BOL live, being able to chat and hitting sites as you bring them up. The video's okay but I don't think necessary. Being a live participant is what's exciting. Do you think you can at least keep the audio/chat going? and maybe expand to gadgettes? That'd be cool.

C|Net versus other Tech media
Good Afternoon Ms Wood,

Although I am not a "techie" I have read some recent web commentary on C|Net. These articles all were comparing C|net unfavorably to other (more recent) tech news sites such as techmeme, techcrunch, digg, etc.

This commentary all had the flavor of "C|net has lost its edge"

I will say that this commentary was all very favorable to the appointment of Dan Farber as editor-in-chief of C|net news.

Not that you need discuss about some (nameless - as I cant remember a name.. Matthew Igram perhaps) tech journalist has to say about your employer...

But are all "C|neters" as happy with the addition of Mr. Farber?

CNet's journalism style guide?
Hey Molly, I've noticed that you occasionally impart the phrase "an historic," which is typically considered British (as they tend not to pronounce the "h"), or archaic in form. Obviously, using "an" in front of a word like "hour" (with a silent "h") is fine. I know that you're very conscious of grammar choice, so I'm wondering why the use of "an" in front of a vocalized "h"? Or is this what CNet dictates as part of their style guide?

Don't know if this is the right forum or you can refer me to another site/forum. I had a programmer develop a website with backend function modules. by al409 - 2/28/08 11:48 AM
People want to be on C|Net, how about submitting video mails
Other shows have aired select user-submitted video emails. ZDTV even gave away webcams - but those were crazy times. Maybe we could see Alex from Miami, Doppelganger Tom, or Dave the Patent Attorney.

Oh wait, BOL is an AUDIO podcast. C|Net should fix that.

Advice for wannabe 'net personalities
Hi Molly! I write on a blog or two, but would really like to get noticed more and eventually have a podcast on technology with different guests on all the time. It seems like the hard part is getting noticed - I mean, what big time personalities want to come on a podcast with some unknown dudes who have a small-time podcast? And how do unknowns even get a chance to review gadgets and tech when companies wouldn't dare give an unknown a review unit?

So I wonder what kind of advice you have for that kind of person. (Maybe I could get noticed more if you or Tom would be on my podcast. ;) )

Studio lighting or camera change?
Within the last month or so, I've noticed that Buzz Report and the TivoCast (along with some other shows) appear to have the appearance of being shot with fluorescent lighting - a cooler (color temp), crisper appearance. It also similar to what I see in using video (30 fps) rather than film (24 fps). Did you guys recently change your lighting and/or camera equipment?

How can someone with a bad voice get a job doing video reviews at Cnet? and yes I am referring to Dan A. Don't you think he sounds a bit foolish when he opens his mouth? I mean honestly I felt like lighting my hair on fire and punching myself in the face.

RE: Q: This might seem strange but: Why do the other CNET properties mess up on gaming news so often?
Basically every single one that happens to talk about gaming at all. BOL tends to produce half truths and mild lies. The 404 has funny things to say including some artificial constructs on the state of the gaming industry. Tom comments oddly when talking on the Real Deal.
Its hard to give specific examples- maybe BOL talking about console SKUs?
