Norton AntiVirus 2008 Install Help

by eroad10 - 2/25/08 12:40 PM

Hi,

I bought the Norton Antivirus 2008 product. Currently running a Norton 2006 Antivirus but the definations are updated, until now.

Also a Norton 2006 firewall running.

When I try to install it, I get a: Norton Firewall must be removed first popup. I can't and don't want to remove the firewall, cause I got no backup disk. (And besides I like the settings I have running with it already.)

Why is the Norton Antivirus 2008, trying to remove my Firewall? (And it's the same company product.)

Is there a way around it? I forgot how but last year with the 2007 disk I was able to install the update on my Norton Antivirus 2006 software and keep it running for a year with new virus subscription for a year.

Not really caring if the 2008 software is installed. (If it can't be.) I'm really after the 2006 software being up to date and the subscription running for a year.

And I don't want to lose my Firewall in the process.

Thanks for any help,

Rob

If you click on the program where

the "renewal date" is after you open the program, just follow the prompts and you can renew the defs for another year that way but that means the 2008 disk that you already bought would be useless to you unless maybe you can return it for a refund. If you are using a credit card for the renewal it will renew instantaneously afer you complete the process.

Already got

I already got the disk and opened. Can't return. And besides, I'd rather not have to pay a subscription online payment. Had trouble in the past and avoid it when I can.

OK. You asked this

so that is what I told you how to do if all you wanted to do was update the defs for another year. I have an older version of NAV myself but I don't have a Norton Firewall and I always renew that way. Maybe Donna (when she is online) can help better as far as installing the 2008 version without losing the firewall in the 2006 version. She uses 2008 on one of her computers I THINK.

Got it

Hey all,

Just wanted to say it somehow, by messing with 2006 got the virus update from the 2008 disk running. Not sure exactly which process I hit, cause was trying various things. Glad that's all fixed.

It really is weird though why they want you to remove one of their own products that your using. That doesn't seem right. Glad I didn't have to, I like the Firewall setup they use.

If you all ready opened the disk and you want a refund you can request a DOD if you want.

Returning opened software

by spierskalla - 8/19/09 3:26 PM In reply to: Already got by eroad10

Hello,
You stated that you can't return the software because you've already opened it. I don't specifically recall for Norton and I've thrown out the boxes, but for many software companies, if you've purchased software from a retail store, and you've opened it, you can get a refund from the software company if you don't agree to the terms.
Recall that the software terms and agreement can be quite extensive. Often the software company doesn't print the agreement on the retail box. Therefore, the customer can't be expected to read and agree to terms he can't read until opening the box without actually opening it.
It will often state right in the agreement terms that you have 30 days (or similar) to request a refund if you don't agree to the terms.

I certainly understand that this doesn't help you on this product because of the time that has passed but you may keep this in mind for future purchases.

Thanks, Scott

PS. Someone else stated that you can request a DOD but I don't know what that is or if it is the same as what I've suggested.

firewall norton 2008

by albertonene1 - 2/25/08 3:58 PM In reply to: Norton AntiVirus 2008 Install Help by eroad10

Recommendation of another AV-product

by be3sun - 2/25/08 4:09 PM In reply to: Norton AntiVirus 2008 Install Help by eroad10

Before next time you have to renew your Norton account - buy Eset Smart Security instead, it will be marginally more expensive than a renewal of Norton. And it will search your harddisks in about 1/10 of the time it takes Norton to tediously chew through your files. And it will not unlikely find some trojans that Norton did not detect. And it will not burden your processor like Norton does. Google Eset and you will find sheer praise.
I am by no means connected to the company or its representatives, just a happy new owner of this security suite. It has antivirus and antispyware, antispam and a firewall. Maybe it is not the appropriate product for commercial enterprises, but for an ordinary home computer user it is splendid.
