Vista: Not ready for prime time.

by keng612 - 2/23/08 10:51 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've evaluated the Vista Home Premium, and Vista Business versions of this OS. Like everyone else, I drooled over the pretty interface and a couple new features. But thats pretty much were it stops. As a analytical technician, I had to really look at what makes it run, as well as what can actually run on it.

First off, you are pretty much forced to buy a whole new PC to start off with just to run it, or make major upgrades on a existing system (if its new enough).

Then the amount of overhead processing running in the background makes my shiney new HP run slower than my AMD 64 3500+ CPU system.

Loading and shutdown times were over 3-4 times longer than my XP system.

Practically every application I had needed to be upgraded, or I had to buy new versions so it would run on Vista. Thats another hidden cost that most of us don't consider.

I then manually went through, using suggestions from forums, on turning off or manually tweaking settings and registry settings to thinning out the fluff and process hungry internals, and managed to finally get the OS to boot up, run and shutdown "almost" as quickly as XP.

At first, I got Home premium with the HP I bought, but I quickly scraped that because I have a small home network and it was missing all the components needed to join a domain, group policy editing, etc. So I installed Vista Business. Personally, I think the Business or Ultimate version is the way to go if you really want Vista to do anything beyond playing some games and surfing the internet with.

What puzzles me, is even on a Dual Core CPU, it is not really all that fast as you would think. And you really have to laugh at MS's performance evaluator they have in it. It scans your OS and hardware and thenm tells you on a scale of 1-5 how pathetic your PC is for running Vista. It won't even give you the average. It just goes by the lowest number which psychologically induces you to go out and buy upgrades.

Not that its bad enough that you relly have no choice but to get Home premium on any PC or laptop for consumer models that you go look at.

Plus what is with the administrator permissions on Vista? I want "full" admin rights. Not some predetermined hidden level that Microsoft thinks I should have.

So like a few out there, I decided to "upgrade to XP Pro". I hunted down the drivers I needed for my model HP and installed XP Pro. Not only is the system running faster now, but I'm saving unmeasurable amounts of time and $$$$$ not having to tweak, upgrade or find endless workarounds to get my existing external hardware and software to work.

I'm not totally giving up on it just yet, and will be waiting for SP1, since this will be the first major bug fix package and have a few modifications applied.

I am waiting for Service Pack updates @ increased speed

by PreserveThe2nd - 2/23/08 1:46 PM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't pretend to be a techno-wiz, but it doesn't take a genius to determine that Vista does have improvements but sacrificed a lot of speed. To me that is unacceptable when it is noticeable, not just talking micro-seconds.

I have my XP pro with 2GB RAM and AMD Turon 64x2 computer that was off the shelf at $1000. It sits next to my $2000 custom built Vista Home Premium with 4GB RAM and Intel core duo with 8 times the L2 cache and a hard drive 50% faster rpm and the other components close to maxed out.

I have loaded exactly the same programs on both computers and have timed each and the much slower XP keeps kicking the butt of the Vista higher performance machine. When I went under the performance section of Vista I disabled all but one of the eye candy crap trying to achieve performance - which is what I buy a computer for. Only then did the Vista come close to my XP machine even though there were significant hardware component upgrades in the Vista machine.

I know that the Vista beta service pack is not really supposed to do much for speed improvements, according to what I have read. So I am extremely disappointed with Vista and am sorely tempted to put XP on this new machine, with the same programs installed, and retime everything to see what the performance difference would be based on component changes only - new machine to old (1 year older). But that is a pain in the butt and I got work to do.

So I answered in the poll that I was extremely disappointed with Vista based on my time tests and the slow performance of several programs it has like windows mail. Outlook express could knock out 700+ individual emails an hour when I pushed it (doing each by hand - no auto program or bcc). I would like to time windows mail in doing the same - or maybe not as I would not like to see the results.

That's it. When you spend $1000 more on component improvements you expect to at least see moderate speed improvement. Vista is like a set of reins holding back a race horse. I guess I am now waiting on service pack 2. And hoping.

Better than XP

by mopscare42 - 2/23/08 5:58 PM In reply to: I am waiting for Service Pack updates @ increased speed by PreserveThe2nd

I have had Windows Vista Home Premium since the first day it came out and like it much better than XP.
There were problems in the beginning with drivers, but that was the fault of the venders such as Nvidia, HP, Epson and a couple others.
Once they caught up with Windows Vista I have not had one crash or lockup.
Unlike one poster here, my computer runs faster with Vista than it did with XP. But Vista runs much better with 2 gig of ram.
I have a HP 8250 printer with the duel sided print attachment and HP still has a problem getting it right after 13 months?
They say it's Microsofts problem and it will be fixed with SP1. We shall see.

re: Speed and driver comments

by PreserveThe2nd - 2/23/08 6:34 PM In reply to: Better than XP by mopscare42

Mopscare,

I wish I had the same experience with speed improvement, but didn't. Having side by side computers and a timer allowed me to be pretty accurate in my measurements. That and knowing the same programs are loaded on both to eliminate that variable as well.

Sadly, I am having the same experience as you with HP printers. I have two that are using another printer driver to gimp them into working with Vista. My 3rd, a multifunction D145 can print but lost about all it's other capabilities.

After arguing with HP corporate folks, they offered me $50 toward a new printer. I suggested that they pay that $50 to a technician to write up a new driver so everyone owning that printer would have a solution. They didn't think much of that idea. But after owning 3 HP printers and 2 HP laptops, I got a lot of $ tied up in their products and got a right to gripe about poor support now that Vista has been out awhile.

As I said, Vista works much better with 2 gig of ram compaired to 1 gig. How much ram do you have?
I added a third gig of ram just to see if it made a difference and it didn't seem to make much difference, so I think that 2 gig is the sweet spot for Vista.
As for HP? those people are like talking to the 3 stooges, only worse.
I was told on the last call that it was a Microsoft problem and would be fixed with SP1. The guy also said that if that didn't fix the problem, HP was not going to worry about it and wouldn't be releasing any up dates for it.? Great company!
If you only have 1 gig of ram, try adding another gig and you will see a difference in speed.
Good luck.

Vista is unstable

by lwlloyd - 2/23/08 8:51 PM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I know 3 different people that had it crash for no apparent reason and require reloading on their new laptops.

The latest updates and extra RAM have improved the experienc

by Albertv - 2/24/08 1:59 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

At first instance with the increase in memory at all, Vista did not perform like XP Pro SP2 on this machine, until I had a look at the 'Rights management' aspect of the 'user/administrator' account. The 'right' are really limited. I played around until I managed to change it to full 'rights', and than the speed up was dramatic. Since I had gone back to XP and than restored to Vista Home Premium, I know what I am talking about on this machine. What will make Vista always slower than XP is the Microsoft new obsession with security. If you are willing to by pass that Vista will speed up. I rather like hacking it over going back to XP since the hardware folks are not really writing and updating hardware drivers for XP any longer. I have an HP dv2500tw CTO, 4 Gig RAM, 2.2 MHz CPU, nVidia 8400M GS, 160 HD etc.

Very Satisfied With Vista

by Clintmax - 2/24/08 8:37 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I was concerned about getting a machine with Vista pre-installed at first because I had heard too many things were incompatible with the OS. Then, I was in a big box electronics store a few weeks ago and saw the Gateway FX7020. AMD Phenom 9600 processor, 3GB ram, 500GB hard drive, nVidia Ge-force 8800 GT graphics, Vista Home Premium...and I couldn't resist! I HAD to have it! Since then, I have thoroughly enjoyed Vista and its new look.

The only compatibility issue I found was with my scanner (which was over 8 years old) and I had to go buy a new one. I needed one anyway.

I have had not one crash, the user interface is great and the system is really fast! I've had no issues with any of the updates so far (as some other posters have indicated). I love the Search function as well and use it all the time too.

In all...extremely satisfied! Go Vista, says I!

Somewhat satisfied- great on a new system, less so on older

by Scott Gardener - 2/24/08 9:46 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I know, the subject line hardly comes as a shock--that Vista does well on a new computer but not on an older system. Hardly a shocker to anyone here, though it's amazing how many people out there blame Vista for being sluggish on computers more than two years old, when it wasn't intended or recommended for them.

On a new Fujitsu Lifebook 4215 with 2 Gigs of RAM and a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, it runs smoothly and is not showing any of the glitches or software compatability issues mentioned on nearly every tech site or forum. It's running Vista Business, the 32 bit version.

On my older desktop, running an Athlon 64 3000+ and 1.5 Gigs of RAM, plus a Radeon 1600 graphics card, it's a bit slower, but it runs Aero just fine. Turning off Aero visual effects does not speed it up noticably, so I leave it running. All things considered, it's performing a little better than I expected. I'm running Ultimate, 64 bit version. The 64 bit platform did have a little bit of the support issues, but not enough to keep me from using it. I configured it as a dual boot to XP, just in case, but after almost a year of not using the XP partition, I ended up deleting it for extra space.

windows vista came installed on Laptop Compaq Presario V6000

by Amder1990 - 2/24/08 10:34 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I love it. But there was an expensive learning curve. I should have done the tutorials first!! but no, I dont always do the right thing, first. So, after buying memory 2xs!! so that my little laptop is maxed out, now it all runs smoothly. This little super on sale model only came with enough memory to barely run the program. Being a total newbie, I have had the computer in 2 times to adjust my add-ons, and I now just love it. I have heard the naysayers, but you know what? this is the way it is going to be, so learn to use it and it will really be a great easy to use program.

I'm happy with Vista

by ESUNintel - 2/24/08 11:33 AM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have Vista Ultimate and so far I am happy with it, not extremely, but still happy. Vista has given me some problems when running ISS, especially with a single user Acess 2007 Database; however, it works well with SQL Server 2005, and I can not wait to run SQL 2008. At first I had minor issues with Visual Studio, but it works great now. From a business user/IT point of view Vista is not so bad; however, from a personal (non business point of view) it has prevented me from playing a few PC games, it has crashed a few times, I have had to install the OS DVD about 7 times fro system repairs, and other issues that Microsoft has addressed or will, I hope, soon address.
I am happy to announce that 2 days ago I did join the "Dark Side" and got my self a MacBook Air with Leopard, and so far I am extremely happy with OS X, lets just say that within the two day period it has given me less issues than Vista. I must continue to use Vista because of my field, but I never regret having updated my computers to Vista, and I do not miss XP Pro at all.

no real advantage for me - somewhat dissatisfied

by galootey - 2/24/08 12:17 PM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Vista came with my new PC - as far as performance goes not much change from XP. However, two items - I am unable to install some older software that worked with XP; also, Vista has the annoying habit of shutting down and restarting for updates without warning - right when I am in the middle of something. That makes me mad because XP would always give you a pop-up to warn you first.

Very Satisfied

by davdunlap - 2/24/08 1:01 PM In reply to: Poll: If you use Vista, how satisfied are you with it? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am a small business owner, and all of the PCs in my business are running Vista Ultimate (mix of x86 and x64), and have been since February of 2007. I have had no problems with anything working, as I did my research first and got all of the machines ready beforehand. I have had some BSOD issues on one machine, and traced those back to a faulty piece of memory... replaced it, and the problem went away. In short, not every blue screen is due to an OS problem... do some research.

At home, I have a mixed network with XP, Vista, Linux, and OSX, and have set it up carefully to avoid any communication issues. Everything talks and plays nicely (with the occasional exception of the Ubuntu box, as it seems to like to ignore my settings from time to time). Most of the issues I have heard from people, are based around trying to do get by with the wrong version of vista (ie - cheaping out). If you want it all, Ultimate is the way to go... if you are working on a single home system, Home Premium is the way to go... Business and Home Basic are kind of pointless in my opinion, but fill the gap for some people.

Good post. One question, though

by bhodges00 - 2/24/08 3:07 PM In reply to: Very Satisfied by davdunlap

Very nice post and right on. Research will save your sanity. I'm curious if your OSX is it Leopard or is it Tiger? The reason I ask is that some people in Mac forums who upgrade to Leopard are having problems connecting to Vista via network. I use both Vista 64 Ultimate and Macbook with Leopard but I don't have them setup on a network.
